A body man who spends three weeks on one quarter panel needs a vehicle held still, held high, and held out of the way of a welder, a grinder, and a creeper — not flipped through a lift cycle eighteen times a day. Configuration A: The Clear-Floor Two-Post

The first setup is a 10,000 or 12,000 lb clear-floor two-post — a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL10 class machine — anchored to a properly poured slab with a ceiling-mounted equalization system. For restoration, the argument for it is simple and strong: nothing is under the car. When you’re cutting out rockers, replacing floor pans, or media-blasting the underside of a 1968 fastback, you want an uninterrupted view and uninterrupted access from bumper to bumper. Runways get in the way of exactly the work a restoration shop does most. A swing-arm design lets you drop a floor pan straight down without maneuvering it around steel.

The tradeoff is that the vehicle is hanging on four pads at pinch welds or frame rails, and on a rust-eaten project car those pickup points are frequently the worst part of the vehicle. We’ve had shops call us because a rocker crumpled under a lift pad on a car they’d already sunk sixty hours into. That’s not a lift defect — it’s a mismatch between the equipment and the vehicle’s condition. If your work is mostly solid-body drivers and mechanical restoration, the two-post is the better car lift automotive choice. Configuration B: The Four-Post With a Rolling Jack

The second setup is a 9,000 to 14,000 lb four-post with a set of rolling bridge jacks. The vehicle drives on and sits on its tires. Nothing squeezes a compromised rocker, nothing loads a rusty frame rail, and the car can sit up in the air for a month while you fabricate a patch panel without you worrying about hydraulic drift on a locked column. That last point matters more in restoration than anywhere else in the trade, because a restoration vehicle occupies a bay for weeks, not hours.

The rolling jack is what makes this configuration workable rather than just convenient storage. It lets you pick the wheels up off the runways to pull suspension, do brake work, or set ride height. One of the most common service calls we get on this configuration is exactly what it sounds like: a shop that bought a four-post years ago, added a rolling jack later, and never had the lift leveled or the jack adjusted properly to the runway spread. We come out, square the columns, re-tension the cables, and set the jack. Suddenly the whole setup works the way it was supposed to. Where the Two Configurations Split on Cost

On sticker, a comparable-capacity four-post generally runs somewhat higher than a two-post, and adding rolling jacks pushes it further. But the installed number is where the real comparison lives, and it frequently reverses the ranking. A two-post has to be anchored into concrete that meets the manufacturer’s minimum thickness and PSI. On older southeast Iowa shop floors — and there are a lot of 1950s and 1960s buildings still in service down there — that means we’re often coring out a section and pouring engineered footings. Add the concrete work, the cure time, and the electrical for the power unit, and that quiet little price advantage evaporates.

A four-post is comparatively forgiving. It’s a freestanding structure that distributes load across four base plates, so on a marginal slab it may need nothing more than shimming and leveling. Some models can even run on caster kits if you need to reposition. We’ve had restoration shops in the region choose the four-post specifically because it let them skip a concrete project entirely and get running the same week the truck delivered. Garage Build-Out Sequencing: What Goes First

Restoration shops get build-out sequencing wrong more often than any other segment we serve, and it costs them real money. The correct order is: slab first, lift layout second, everything else third. We have walked into brand-new buildings where the air lines, the electrical drops, the paint booth, and the parts shelving were all installed and finished — and then the owner measured for the lift and discovered the ceiling-mount crossbar for the two-post would land dead center on a light fixture and a rafter tie. Moving air lines is a Saturday. Moving a lift bay is a demolition project.

Before anything else gets committed, mark your bay footprint on the floor in chalk and live with it for a week. Roll a project car in. Open both doors fully. Walk a floor jack around it. Stand where the welder will stand. For a two-post, verify overhead clearance at the crossbar, not just at the columns. For a four-post, verify you have runway approach length plus enough beyond the rear of the vehicle for the ramps to fold. Then check where your compressor drops, your 220V, and your fume extraction will run so they clear the columns. Ceiling Height, Roof Trusses, and Old Iowa Buildings

Southeast Iowa has beautiful old commercial buildings and a lot of them have terrible ceilings for lifts. Bowstring trusses, low header beams over the overhead door, sagging drop ceilings that were added in 1978 to save on heat — we’ve seen all of it. The practical number to know is that a full-rise two-post with a ceiling-mounted crossbar generally wants 12 feet or more of clear height, and pushing a tall vehicle to full rise wants more than that. Floorplate two-post models exist precisely for low-ceiling buildings, moving the equalization bar to a plate at floor level.

The floorplate design solves the ceiling problem and creates a small new one: there’s now a bar across the floor between the columns. For restoration work where you’re rolling engine hoists, transmission jacks, and body carts in and out constantly, that bar becomes a daily annoyance and a trip hazard. It’s a legitimate tradeoff, not a dealbreaker, and plenty of shops run floorplate machines happily for decades. A four-post sidesteps the whole conversation because its overhead requirement is simply vehicle height plus rise plus your working headroom. Measure your true clear height at the lowest obstruction across the entire bay footprint, not at the peak. Long-Term Service and Parts Reality

Whichever way the comparison lands, plan for the maintenance profile you’re signing up for. A two-post has a small number of high-consequence wear items: equalization cables, lock latches and their release mechanism, arm restraint gears, and cylinder seals. Cables are the big one. They stretch, they fray at the sheaves, and on a machine that cycles hard they’re a periodic replacement item. A four-post has more cables — four of them, plus the slack-cable safety system — but they generally live an easier life because the lift is cycled far less often in a restoration setting. The wear items that actually bite four-post owners are the rolling jack: worn pump seals, tired pads, and jacks that were never properly adjusted to runway width in the first place. That one item generates a real share of our four-post service calls. The two-post earns its keep in a two-lift shop as the second machine, or as the primary in a shop doing mostly mechanical restoration on structurally sound vehicles. When a customer runs both, they use the four-post for long-term projects and the two-post for the fast turnaround work that pays the light bill.
