A heavy-duty truck shop owner in southeast Iowa emailed us in February with a photograph of his floor and one line of text: “7,000 lb. lift.” He wanted to add a car lift automotive setup on the end of his shop — not for semis, which he already had mobile columns for, but for the eight collector cars and two boats his customers pay him to store over the winter. Stack them vertically, free up floor space, charge more per square foot. Good plan. The problem was in the photo: a saw-cut line running right through where he wanted a column, and a slab he thought was six inches that turned out to be closer to four. Step One: Know What You’re Actually Anchoring Into

Before anybody talks price, somebody has to know the floor. A four-post storage lift distributes load across four base plates and usually calls for a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete, which sounds forgiving — but that minimum assumes the slab is continuous, reinforced or at least fiber-mixed, cured, and sitting on compacted base. Farm-shop and rural commercial slabs in southeast Iowa are frequently none of those things. We see 3.5-inch pours over soft fill, control joints in bad places, and slabs poured in three phases across twenty years with cold joints between them.

Core testing is cheap insurance. We drill two 2-inch cores per column location, measure actual thickness, look for reinforcement, and send samples for compression testing if there’s any doubt. On this southeast Iowa job the cores came back at 4 and 4.25 inches, no rebar, no fiber, over a gravel base that had clearly settled — you could feel the deflection walking across it with a loaded floor jack. That ruled out anchoring directly. Anybody who tells you a car lift automotive install is a two-hour bolt-down job without looking at the floor first is guessing with your money. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars on core testing and consider it the best line item in the budget.

Slab Thickness and Rebar: The Numbers That Matter

Here’s what we specify when a floor has to be rebuilt for lift anchoring. For a four-post in the 9,000 to 14,000 lb range, we cut and pour footing pads at minimum 4 feet by 4 feet under each column, 8 to 12 inches deep, using 4,000 psi mix. Reinforcement is #4 rebar (half-inch) on a 12-inch grid, two mats where depth allows, with the top mat at least 2 inches below the finished surface so anchor embedment doesn’t hit steel. We dowel into the existing slab with epoxied #4 bars on 12-inch centers so the new pad and the old floor act together instead of independently.

Two details people skip. First, cure time: 28 days at full strength, and we do not anchor early no matter how much anybody wants the lift running. In an unheated southeast Iowa shop in February, low temperatures stretch that further — concrete below 50 degrees cures dramatically slower, so we either heat and blanket the pour or wait for spring. Second, control joints and cracks: never place a column base within 6 inches of a joint or an existing crack, because anchor expansion will propagate that crack straight to the edge. On this job we shifted the whole lift footprint 14 inches east to get clear of a control joint, which cost us nothing but a redrawn layout. Cost Breakdown, Part One: The Lift Itself

Let’s talk real ranges. For seasonal vehicle storage, the equipment tier you land in depends on what you’re stacking. An 8,000 lb four-post with standard 165-inch runways handles most cars and light trucks and sits in the low-to-mid four-figure range for a quality unit. Step up to a 9,000 to 10,000 lb capacity with extended runways — which you want if a customer’s dually or a boat on a trailer is going up top — and you’re in the mid four figures. Fourteen thousand pound units with heavy-duty runways and hydraulic power units land in the high four to low five figures.

The temptation with storage lifts is to buy on price alone, and we understand it — the lift is holding a parked car, not lifting under load all day. But the components that fail on storage lifts are exactly the ones budget units cheap out on: lifting cables, cable sheaves, and slack safety latches. A vehicle that sits raised for five months puts constant tension on four cables and four latches, and corrosion in an unheated Iowa building does the rest. We stock replacement cables and sheaves for most four-post models because we replace a lot of them, and the cost of a full cable set plus labor is a meaningful fraction of what you saved buying the cheap lift in the first place. Cost Breakdown, Part Two: Concrete, Freight, and Electrical

Concrete on this job was the biggest surprise line. Four footing pads at 4×4 feet by 10 inches deep meant saw-cutting and removing about 55 square feet of existing slab, hauling the spoil, hand-digging and compacting the base, tying rebar, and pouring roughly 1.7 cubic yards. With a local ready-mix short-load charge, that ran the owner in the low-to-mid four figures all in — comparable to a meaningful chunk of the lift price. He didn’t budget for it because nobody told him to. Now we tell everybody.

Freight and electrical are the other two items that get left off napkin math. A four-post crates out around 2,000 to 2,600 pounds and ships LTL on a flatbed or with a liftgate; freight into rural southeast Iowa typically runs several hundred dollars, more if the driveway won’t take a semi and we have to shuttle it. Electrical for a 220V single-phase power unit means a dedicated 30-amp circuit, and in an older farm shop with a 100-amp panel that’s frequently a service upgrade conversation with a licensed electrician. Add anchors, adapters, drip trays, jack tray or rolling jack, and a caster kit if the owner wants to move the lift, and the installed total on this project landed roughly 80 percent above the sticker price of the lift itself. That ratio is high because of the concrete, but a 40 to 60 percent uplift over equipment cost is normal for a properly done car lift automotive install in Iowa. Why a Truck Shop Chose a Four-Post Over a Two-Post

This owner already ran mobile column lifts for his medium-duty and heavy-duty work, so he knew lifts. The reason he wanted a four-post for storage instead of a two-post came down to three things. Drive-on simplicity: a storage customer’s car goes up on runways with no arm positioning, no pinch-weld hunting, and no risk of a summer intern setting an arm under a rocker panel. Long-term stability: a four-post supports through the tires and the suspension stays loaded, which is easier on a car that’s going to sit for five months than hanging it by the frame. And portability: with a caster kit he can roll a lightly loaded unit out of the way in the spring when the storage business slows and the repair bays need space.

The trade-off is service access. You can’t pull wheels on a four-post without a rolling bridge jack, and you can’t get a transmission out from underneath as easily as with a two-post. Since this bay was strictly storage plus occasional light service on stored vehicles, we added a single rolling jack rated to about 6,000 lb and called it good. Ceiling Height, Stacking Math, and Insurance

Stacking math is where storage revenue is won or lost. Take your clear ceiling height, subtract the lift’s maximum rise, subtract the runway thickness, and subtract the height of the tallest vehicle going on top — then leave 6 inches of margin for lights, hoses, and a garage door track you forgot about. In this southeast Iowa shop the clear height was 16 feet 2 inches to the bottom of the truss. A 10,000 lb four-post with about 72 inches of rise and 6-inch runways left comfortable room for a 55-inch-tall collector car on top and a 60-inch car underneath, with a foot of margin. If the top vehicle had been a lifted pickup, that math would have failed.

Insurance is the unglamorous other half. If you take money to store somebody else’s vehicle, your general liability carrier will ask what the vehicle is sitting on. An ALI-certified lift with documented annual inspection is an easy answer; an uncertified import with no paperwork is not. We had one storage operator in eastern Iowa get a carrier questionnaire that specifically asked for lift model, capacity, certification status, and last inspection date. He had all four because we’d left him a folder. That folder is part of what you’re buying when you have a car lift automotive install done properly rather than assembled in a weekend by a friend with a rotary hammer.

What We’d Tell the Next Southeast Iowa Shop Owner

Sequence the project correctly and it costs less. Core the floor first, before you pick a model, because the floor determines whether you’re anchoring a two-post, a four-post, or going with a portable unit on a caster kit that doesn’t need anchors at all. Then pick capacity based on the heaviest and tallest thing you’ll ever put up there, not the average. Then get the concrete quote and the electrical quote in writing before you order the lift, because those two numbers move the total more than the difference between two comparable lift models. Then order, allowing 2 to 4 weeks for freight on most stocked configurations and longer on specialty runway lengths.

The southeast Iowa job finished in April instead of March because of cure time, and the owner has run it through two storage seasons since. He raised his winter storage rate, doubled the number of vehicles in the same building footprint, and paid the whole project off inside eighteen months. That’s a good outcome, and it happened because he sent us a photo of his floor instead of just clicking “buy” on a lift.
