Why Alignment Bays Get Financed Differently Than Service Bays
A general service bay pays for itself on volume. You put a two-post in, you flag hours on brakes and exhaust and suspension, and the payback math is straightforward. An alignment bay is a different animal because the lift is only half the purchase. You are buying an alignment rack, turnplates, rear slip plates, a rolling jack or two, and then an aligner head system that often costs as much as the rack itself. That total package pushes a project into a capital request category, and capital requests get scrutinized by people who have never turned a wrench.
The dealership in northern Missouri ran into exactly that wall. Their controller looked at a single line item and balked. What unstuck it was breaking the project into components with separate depreciation lives and separate funding sources. The rack and rolling jacks are fixed equipment with a fifteen-to-twenty-year service life. The aligner is a technology purchase on a shorter cycle. Once those were split, the fixed equipment piece qualified for a straightforward equipment note and the aligner went on a manufacturer program. We see this pattern constantly — the money exists, but the request has to be shaped so the finance side recognizes what it is looking at. Real Dimensions: What an Alignment Bay Actually Needs
Numbers first, because this is where projects die. A typical four-post alignment rack in the 14,000 to 18,000 lb class runs 26 to 30 feet in overall length with the approach ramps down, and the runways themselves are usually 14 to 18 feet long depending on wheelbase capacity. Overall width across the outside of the runways lands between 100 and 130 inches. You want a minimum bay width of 15 feet to work comfortably around the vehicle with a rolling jack in play, and 16 to 18 feet is better if techs will be pulling wheels for a brake job on the same rack.
Ceiling height is the constraint people forget. Most alignment racks only lift 60 to 72 inches, which is generous compared to a two-post, but you still need clearance for a raised hood or an open liftgate on a tall SUV. We tell shops to plan on 12 feet minimum, 14 if they service three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks. Concrete for a four-post is more forgiving than a two-post — the load spreads across eight base plates instead of two columns — but we still want 4 inches minimum at 3,000 PSI and prefer 5 inches. The Missouri dealership had 6 inches of 4,000 PSI slab from a 2011 addition, which meant zero concrete work and about nine days shaved off the schedule.
How Deposit and Progress Payment Schedules Usually Break Down
Almost every commercial lift order we write follows a similar rhythm. A deposit locks the order with the factory and covers freight staging — that is typically 30 to 50 percent depending on the manufacturer and whether the configuration is stock or built to order. The balance splits between delivery and completed install. On larger multi-bay projects we will sometimes run three milestones: deposit at order, progress payment at delivery to site, and final on sign-off after the load test.
What surprises people is how much lead time affects the deposit conversation. A stock Rotary four-post alignment rack in a common configuration might ship in two to four weeks. A Challenger rack with a specific turnplate pocket layout, extended runways, and dual rolling jacks can run eight to twelve weeks. That gap matters enormously for a dealership trying to land equipment inside a fiscal year, because the deposit hits one period and the balance hits another. The northern Missouri shop used that intentionally — deposit in the closing fiscal year against remaining capital budget, balance in the new year against the fresh allocation. Nobody bent a rule. They just planned the calendar. Equipment Notes, Leases, and Manufacturer Programs
There are basically three ways shops pay for this equipment beyond writing a check. An equipment note through a local bank is the cleanest — you own the asset, you depreciate it, and rural Missouri and Iowa banks understand collateral you can see and touch. A lift bolted to a slab is not going anywhere, and loan officers like that. Terms in the 36 to 60 month range are common, and the monthly on a mid-size alignment package often lands close to what two extra alignment tickets a week would cover.
Capital leases with a buyout are the second route, and they tend to suit shops that want the equipment off the balance sheet or that expect to upgrade the aligner separately. The third route is manufacturer or distributor financing, which sometimes comes with deferred first payment or a seasonal skip. We have seen dealerships in farm country use skip-payment structures deliberately so nothing is due in February and March when service volume dips. Whatever route you take, get the freight, install labor, concrete work, and electrical in the financed amount. The number one budget blowup we see on car lift automotive projects is a shop financing the equipment and then paying cash for a $4,000 electrical run they did not plan for.
The Line Items People Forget to Put in the Loan
Freight to a northern Missouri dealership from a midwest distribution point is usually a manageable line, but it is not zero, and liftgate or inside-delivery charges add up fast if there is no dock and no forklift on site. Ask what is included. We quote freight separately so shops can see it, because burying it makes the comparison shopping dishonest.
Electrical is the classic surprise. Most commercial alignment racks and four-posts run a 208-230V single-phase or three-phase power unit, and if the nearest panel is 80 feet away across a finished shop, you are looking at conduit, wire, a disconnect, and an electrician’s day rate. Air is often needed too for the lock release on certain models and for the rolling jacks. Then there is anchoring hardware, shims for an out-of-level slab, and the aligner’s own mounting and calibration. Payback Math a Service Manager Can Defend
Here is the argument that actually moved the general manager. Alignment is one of the few services where a dealership competes directly with independents and tire chains and usually loses on price — but wins decisively when the vehicle is already in the shop for something else. If a tech can put a car on the rack, do the alignment, and pull the wheels for a brake inspection without moving it, you capture work that would otherwise walk. The rack is not an alignment machine, it is a work-retention machine.
Run it conservatively. Assume a modest number of additional alignments per week at your posted rate, ignore any upsell entirely, and see whether that alone covers the note. In the Missouri case it did, with room. Then the upsell — tie rods, control arm bushings, tire sales driven by an alignment printout showing wear — was pure upside they did not have to promise anyone. That is how you present a car lift automotive capital request to someone who does not know what a caster shim is. Give them a floor that clears the payment, and let the real numbers beat the projection. A year in, that dealership added a second rolling jack because the rack was busy enough that techs were waiting on each other, which is the best problem a service manager can have.
Timing Install Around the Payment Schedule
The last piece is sequencing. A financed project has dates attached to it, and those dates need to line up with a bay actually being out of service. If concrete has to be cut and poured, add a cure window — we want 28 days on new structural pour before anchoring, and no reputable installer will short that.
So work backward. Pick the week the bay can be down, subtract install, subtract freight transit, subtract factory lead time, and that tells you when the deposit has to land. The northern Missouri dealership set their bay-down week for a slow stretch in early summer, which put the order date in early spring and the deposit right where their fiscal calendar needed it. Nothing about that was complicated, but nobody had laid it out on a single page before.
