A collector outside Cedar Rapids called us about eighteen months ago with six vehicles, a three-car detached garage, and a bad back. He wanted to stack two cars to free floor space, but what he really wanted — and did not say until our second conversation — was to stop doing brake jobs on jack stands. The Site Survey: Measuring Before Shopping
He had already picked a model off a website before he called. That is normal and it is almost always wrong. The unit he wanted needed roughly 12 feet of clearance to stack two sedans with a comfortable margin, and his garage measured 10 feet 4 inches to the bottom of the truss chord — with a garage door opener rail hanging another five inches into the middle of the bay. That is a fatal problem for the model he chose and a solvable one for a lower-rise unit with a different lifting height.
A real site survey takes about forty minutes and it measures six things: clear ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, overall bay width, overall bay depth, door header height, slab thickness, and power availability. We also look at slab condition — cracking, spalling, control joint placement, and whether the floor pitches toward a drain. His slab pitched about an inch over the length of the bay, which is common in Iowa garages and completely manageable with shims, but you have to know about it before the truck shows up. Ceiling Math, Vehicle Stack Height, and What Actually Fits
Here is the arithmetic we walked him through on a napkin. Take your clear ceiling height. Subtract the height of the tallest vehicle that will go on top. Subtract about 4 to 6 inches of runway and crossmember structure under the top vehicle’s tires. What is left is how tall the vehicle underneath can be, minus a few inches of working margin so you are not scraping a roof.
With 10 feet 4 inches, a 55-inch-tall coupe on top, and roughly 5 inches of runway structure, he had about 63 inches for the bottom vehicle. That fits a low sports car or a sedan with the antenna removed. It does not fit his pickup, which he had assumed would be the bottom car. Realizing that in November instead of in January is the entire value of a site survey. We ended up specifying a four-post rated at 8,000 lb with a lower maximum rise, added a rolling jack so he could get wheels off, and he now stacks the two lowest cars and parks the truck on the floor beside them. Not the plan he started with, but the plan that works in the building he actually owns. Prep Work He Did Himself Before Install Day
We gave him a short list and he knocked out all of it, which cut install time meaningfully. First, clear the bay completely — not mostly, completely, including the shelving on the side wall that would have blocked column placement. Second, sweep and degrease the slab where the base plates land, because we are shimming to level and grit under a base plate is a long-term problem.
Third, power. His unit needed a dedicated 220V circuit and the nearest subpanel was on the opposite wall. He had an electrician run it two weeks ahead, mounted the disconnect where we told him, and left enough whip to reach the power unit position. That single item is the most common reason a home install turns into two visits. Fourth, he relocated the garage door opener rail assembly to a side-mount jackshaft opener — about a half-day job for him — which recovered five inches of centerline clearance and made the whole stack work. Fifth, he cleared a path from the driveway to the bay wide enough for two people carrying a 14-foot runway. That sounds trivial until you are the two people. None of this is glamorous, but prep is the difference between a four-hour install and a wasted day.
Install Day and the First Cycle Test
Install ran about five hours with two techs. Columns set and shimmed to level, crossmembers and runways placed, cables routed and tensioned, hydraulic line run and bled, power unit wired and cycled. The part homeowners always underestimate is cable tensioning — four cables have to be equalized so the runways rise level and the safety locks engage simultaneously. Get it wrong and you get the classic symptom of one corner dropping into its lock a half-second before the others, which is loud, alarming, and hard on the hardware.
We ran it empty a dozen cycles, then loaded it with his heaviest sedan and ran it through full travel with lock engagement at every height. Then we walked him through the daily ritual: visual on the cables, listen for all four locks, never work under a lift that is resting on hydraulic pressure instead of steel. He asked how often to check tension and the honest answer is monthly for the first six months while things settle, then quarterly. Cables stretch a little when new. The First Brake Job: Rolling Jack Reality Check
Three months in he tackled front rotors and pads on a mid-sixties car with a disc conversion. This is where the rolling jack earns its money, and also where he learned something. The second brake job, on a different car eight months later, took him half the time because he already knew the drill. That is the real first-year arc: the equipment is not hard, but the first time you do anything on it you are slow and slightly nervous. Working at chest height on a rotor instead of on your back on a creeper is not a luxury when you are past sixty. He replaced one drip tray that a leaking transmission had eaten through, which is a consumable, not a failure.

Would He Do Anything Differently
Two things, he said. First, he would have measured before he shopped instead of after, which would have saved him three weeks of enthusiasm aimed at a model that was never going to fit. Second, he would have added the caster kit at order time. He skipped it to save money, then spent a Saturday six months later wishing he could roll the whole assembly two feet forward to open a wall cabinet. Retrofitting casters is possible but it is a lot easier to have them on the original order.
What he would not change: buying more capacity than he needed, and buying the rolling jack. The 8,000 lb rating is more than his cars require, but it means the lift is never near its limit and the components are not stressed. And the rolling jack turned a storage rack into a place he actually works. A year in, he has done two brake jobs, an oil change on every vehicle, and a full exhaust replacement he swears he never would have attempted on jack stands. That is a good return.
