Why He Chose Four-Post Over Two-Post
His first instinct was a two-post, because that is what he had used in shops his whole life and it gives unobstructed access to the wheels and rockers. We pushed back, and here is why. He was not running a business. He wanted to store a car above a car through the winter, roll under something on a Saturday to change oil and check for leaks, and occasionally do brakes. Two-post lifts demand a serious slab, careful spotting on the lift points every single time, and they store nothing. Four-post drives on, holds anything from a Corvette to a three-quarter-ton, and doubles his floor space in a barn where floor space was the actual scarce resource.
The trade-off is real and we said so up front: with the wheels sitting on runways, wheel and brake work requires a rolling jack, which is another purchase and another thing to maintain. He bought the jack with the lift, which was the right call — buying it two years later means matching it to runway spacing you have already forgotten. We also spec’d a caster kit, because the barn does other duty in the summer and being able to shove the whole thing to the wall mattered to him. The Barn Told Us What He Could Buy
Before ordering anything we asked for three measurements and a photo: clear ceiling height, slab thickness if he knew it, and door height. A big advantage of four-post: many models are freestanding and do not require anchoring at all if the floor is level, though we anchor anyway when the customer is not planning to move it. His caster kit meant we skipped anchors and instead spent the time leveling with shim plates until all four columns read true. Install Day in a Cold Pole Barn
We set it in February, which in southeast Iowa means the barn was around 20 degrees and the hydraulic fluid moved like syrup. That is worth mentioning because it affects the schedule — a lift that cycles smoothly at 70 degrees will crawl on the first few passes in the cold, and impatient people assume something is wrong. Nothing was wrong. We ran it up and down a dozen times to warm the fluid and it came right into spec.
The physical install took a crew of two about five hours. Columns and runways came in on a flatbed, we unloaded with a skid steer, and laid out the base position with chalk after confirming there was room to walk on both sides and open a door at the top of the ramp. Cross members went in, cables were routed and tensioned so all four corners rise within the manufacturer’s tolerance, the power unit got mounted at the front-left column, and we plumbed the hydraulic line. He had a 110V circuit available, which most home four-posts will run on, so no electrician was needed — a meaningful savings versus a two-post that wants 220V. Then leveling: shim plates under each column until a vehicle sits dead level and the safety locks drop into the same notch on all four legs at the same time. Month One Through Month Twelve
The first month, he told us, he raised and lowered it forty times for no reason at all. Everybody does this. We also look at things people forget — the drip trays for cracks, the caster kit hardware, the power unit mounting bolts. The whole visit ran a couple of hours and cost him in the low-to-mid three figures. On a twenty-year horizon that is the single most predictable line item in the budget, and skipping it is how a lift that should last three decades ends up failing at year twelve. Twenty-Year Total Cost of Ownership Math
Now the part he actually asked for. Take the purchase price of a quality four-post with a rolling jack and caster kit — mid four figures for a good home-grade unit, higher if you go commercial-grade with heavier steel and a longer warranty. Add freight, which for southeast Iowa on a residential-ish delivery runs a few hundred. Add professional install, mid three to low four figures depending on distance and whether we are anchoring and shimming a rough floor. That is your year-zero number.
Then the recurring side. Annual inspection at low-to-mid three figures times twenty years is the biggest single ongoing cost, though you can stretch it to every other year on a low-cycle home lift and most people do. Hydraulic fluid every three to five years is trivial. Cables are the real replacement item: on a home lift cycled a few hundred times a year, plan on one full cable set somewhere between year twelve and year eighteen, and budget high three figures to low four for parts plus a service visit. A cylinder reseal or replacement is possible but not likely inside twenty years at that duty cycle. Add a few hundred for pads, locks, and miscellaneous hardware over the life.
