Why an RV and trailer shop needs different equipment
Most lift advice online assumes a car. RV and trailer work does not behave like car work. Wheelbases run long, weights are front-and-rear unbalanced with a house body hanging off the back, and the service points you need — differentials, brake drums, suspension hangers, holding tank plumbing — are spread across twenty-five feet of chassis. A standard two-post with 10,000 lb capacity and a nine-foot arm spread is close to useless for a Class A, and marginal even for a big tandem-axle trailer.
What this shop actually needed was a long-runway four-post with a rolling bridge jack, sized for the chassis they see most: cutaway vans, Class C motorhomes, and heavier tandem trailers. That changed the used vs new conversation immediately, because the used market for a 14,000 to 18,000 lb four-post with extended runways is thin in Iowa. There are plenty of used 9,000 lb residential four-posts floating around, and none of them are appropriate here. The first rule of any car lift automotive purchase is that capacity and geometry come before price, because a cheap lift that does not fit your work is a hundred percent waste, not a discount.
The used units we looked at and why we passed
We found three candidates in a two-hundred-mile radius over about six weeks. The first was an older heavy four-post out of a truck shop that had closed. Good bones, but the runways had been cut and re-welded at some point by someone who was not a certified welder, and there was no documentation. We will not put a customer under an uncertified structural repair. Pass.
The second was a much better prospect — a mid-capacity four-post with roughly twelve years on it, still current production, complete with jack. The problem was the cables. All four were original, with visible corrosion at the lower sheaves where water had pooled from years of winter drip. A full cable set plus sheave bearings plus labor was going to run several thousand, and once we added transport and reinstall the delta to new got small. The third was priced right but was a residential-grade unit that topped out well below what they needed. In the end, we recommended new. Not as a sales reflex — we sell used parts and service used equipment every week — but because in the heavy, long-runway segment, the used supply in this region simply does not offer enough good options for a car lift automotive buyer to be choosy.
Install day in a building that was not designed for it
Their shop was a converted implement dealer building with a good slab but a ceiling truss that ran directly over the ideal bay. A four-post gives you flexibility here that a two-post does not, because you are not fighting an overhead crossbar, but we still had to lay out runway position around a column and a door swing. We spent about ninety minutes on layout before a single component came off the trailer, which is normal and is time well spent.
The slab tested fine — this building was poured heavy for equipment traffic, which is one of the quiet advantages of old ag buildings in Iowa. A four-post does not require anchoring the way a two-post does, but we anchor anyway on commercial installs for stability and because it is required in most jurisdictions for lifts used for service rather than storage. Assembly on a long four-post runs most of a day with two techs: columns up, crossbeams set, runways landed, cables routed and tensioned, power unit plumbed, then the long part — leveling the runways to each other and cycling the locks until every position engages cleanly. The first six months: differential service got fast
The immediate payoff was exactly what they hoped. Differential fluid service on a Class C chassis went from a floor-jack-and-cribbing ordeal to a routine job. Vehicle up, drain pan positioned under the housing at working height, cover off, clean the magnet, inspect the ring and pinion for wear pattern, reseal, refill, done. What used to burn most of a morning now runs under an hour on a familiar chassis, and the tech is standing up the whole time instead of lying on cold concrete.
The second-order effect surprised them more. Because vehicles were now easy to get in the air, they started catching things they had been missing. Rusted suspension hangers on trailers. Weeping axle seals. Cracked exhaust hangers. Their average repair order went up meaningfully because inspection got easy, not because anybody was upselling. That is the argument for new equipment that never shows up in a spreadsheet — a car lift automotive setup that is reliable and quick gets used constantly, and one that is slow or that you do not fully trust gets used only when you have no choice. What actually went wrong in year one
Two things, both minor, both instructive. Around month four the lift started drifting slightly out of level between the runways over the course of a day. That is almost always cable stretch, and on a new install it is expected — the cables seat and stretch during the first hundred or so cycles. We came out, re-tensioned all four, rechecked lock engagement, and it has been stable since. Anybody buying a new four-post should budget for that visit; it is not a defect, it is break-in.
The second was the rolling jack. They were leaving it parked under the runways with the saddle extended, and a tech clipped it with a floor creeper hard enough to bend a saddle pin. That is a wear-part replacement, we had it in stock, and it was back in service in two days. The lesson is procedural rather than mechanical: rolling jacks get stored retracted and pushed to the end of the runway, every time. We also got them onto an annual inspection schedule, which is the single highest-value habit any shop with a car lift automotive install can adopt. Documented annual inspections protect your people, satisfy your insurer, and — if you ever sell the equipment — turn it into the maintained used lift that somebody like us will happily recommend to a buyer.
The used vs new framework we gave them, restated
Here is the decision tree, generalized. First, define capacity and geometry from your heaviest and longest regular vehicle, plus twenty percent margin. Second, check the used market for units that meet that spec and are still in current production so parts exist. Third, for any used candidate, get a professional inspection and add the full repair list, transport, teardown, reinstall, and inspection cost to the asking price. Fourth, compare that total to new — and factor in warranty coverage and expected downtime.
In light-duty and storage applications, used frequently wins outright. A well-maintained residential four-post or a mid-capacity two-post from a shop that kept records is often a genuinely good buy, and we help people close those deals regularly.
