That’s how most car lift automotive budgets actually go sideways — not on the equipment line item, but on the building. He had 11 feet of clear height under a truss, a sectional overhead door that swung tracks into the exact spot the columns needed to go, and a slab of unknown thickness. The lift was the cheap part. Step One: Measure Your Clear Height, Not Your Ceiling

The number that matters is clear height at the lift location — the distance from finished floor to the lowest obstruction directly above the vehicle path. Not the peak of the roof. Trusses, sprinkler mains, unit heaters, gas lines, conduit runs, and the open overhead door panel all count as obstructions. We’ve measured shops that advertised 14-foot ceilings and had 10 feet 8 inches of usable clearance once the door was up and the heater hung.

For heavy-duty work, do the arithmetic in the order the truck sees it. Take your tallest routine vehicle height, add the maximum rise of the lift, add pad or adapter stack, and add a foot of working margin so a technician isn’t hunched. A 12-foot box truck plus 30 inches of rise plus adapters puts you at nearly 15 feet before margin. That’s why so many heavy-duty shops in central Iowa run mobile columns with a low rise or go in-ground rather than fight a two-post. Door Swing and the Bay Geometry Nobody Measures

Sectional overhead doors are the quiet budget killer. The track curve and the open door panel occupy the ceiling for the first six to eight feet inside the opening, and high-lift or vertical-lift track configurations push the panel even higher up the wall. If your bay is short and the lift has to sit near the door, you can end up with a column position that physically cannot go where the anchor pattern requires.

We also see the reverse problem: a lift installed correctly, but the door opener rail now sits directly above the crossbar of an overhead two-post. That works until the day someone raises a tall vehicle and the crossbar meets the rail. There are real solutions — converting to high-lift track, relocating the opener, switching to a floor-plate configuration, or using mobile columns that need no fixed structure at all — and each carries a cost. Budget somewhere in the low four figures if door modifications are required, more if you’re changing track type. The point is that a car lift automotive install is a building project as much as an equipment purchase, and pretending otherwise is how shops end up with a machine on a pallet for three months. Equipment Cost Tiers for Heavy-Duty Shops

Rough tiers, no exact numbers. A heavy two-post in the 15,000 to 18,000 lb range lands in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on brand and configuration. A set of four heavy-duty mobile columns rated around 18,000 to 19,000 lb per column runs well into five figures — it’s the most expensive category per unit but the most flexible, and it moves with you if you change buildings. Four-post heavy-duty and in-ground systems sit in a similar five-figure band, with in-ground carrying the highest install cost by a wide margin.

Where does the money actually buy something? Lock hardware, hydraulic quality, wireless control reliability on mobile columns, and parts availability. On heavy-duty equipment we lean hard toward Rotary and Challenger for one practical reason: when a shop is down, we can get parts. A cheaper column set that strands you for six weeks waiting on an overseas cylinder costs more than the price difference. That’s not brand loyalty, it’s arithmetic we’ve watched play out. For daily maintenance work where the lift cycles eight or ten times a shift, duty rating and serviceability matter more than the sticker.

Concrete: The Line Item That Surprises Everyone

Heavy-duty lift anchoring demands real concrete. Manufacturer specs commonly call for a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength, and many older Iowa shop floors — especially buildings that started life as machine sheds or grain facilities — come in thinner and weaker than spec, sometimes with no rebar at all. We core-test when there’s doubt, because guessing here is unacceptable.

If the slab fails, you’re looking at cutting and pouring pads under each column location. That’s typically a few thousand dollars for a two-post footprint and considerably more for a four-post or in-ground pit, plus cure time of a week or more before anchors go in. Mobile columns change this equation because they distribute load through wheels and pads rather than anchors, which is a major reason we recommend them for shops with questionable floors or leased buildings. In-ground goes the other direction: you’re excavating, forming, and pouring, and it’s the most expensive foundation work in the category. Electrical, Air, and the Utilities Nobody Quotes

Heavy-duty power units are commonly single-phase 208-230V or three-phase, and the amperage draw is real. If your panel is full, or you’re running 100 amp service in a shop that grew organically over thirty years, the electrician’s bill can rival the lift’s freight cost. We routinely see a dedicated circuit and disconnect run in the high hundreds to low thousands depending on distance and whether conduit gets buried or surface-mounted.

Air matters too. Most two-post and four-post safety releases are air-actuated, so you need a supply line to the lift location. Mobile column sets need charging outlets positioned where you park them, which sounds trivial until you’re running extension cords across a bay every night. And three-phase is worth asking about specifically: if your building has it, three-phase power units are generally quieter, cooler, and longer-lived under heavy duty cycles. If it doesn’t, adding it is a utility-scale project and usually not worth it just for one lift. Install Labor, Freight, and Startup

Freight on heavy-duty equipment is not trivial. A two-post ships on a flatbed or in a crate that needs a forklift with real capacity, and mobile column sets ship heavy and bulky. Expect freight in the high hundreds to low thousands depending on origin and whether your shop has a dock or a lift truck. Liftgate delivery costs extra and often isn’t practical at these weights.

Install labor for a straightforward heavy two-post on good concrete runs one to two days with a two-person crew. Mobile columns are faster — largely assembly, charging, and calibration. In-ground is a multi-week project with excavation, plumbing, and concrete coordination. Then there’s startup: bleeding hydraulics, setting equalizer or synchronization, verifying lock engagement on all columns, torquing anchors, and running the initial load test. We include that in our installs and document it, because it’s also what an inspector or your insurance carrier will ask about. All in, a realistic total for a heavy-duty car lift automotive project — equipment, freight, concrete contingency, electrical, install, and startup — runs meaningfully above the sticker price of the lift. Plan for the sticker to be roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of your real total.
