A guy in Waterloo emailed us in the middle of winter with a photo of his garage floor and one question: could it hold a car lift automotive setup, or was he about to waste four thousand dollars? He’d been fighting a wheel bearing on his wife’s crossover on jack stands in a cold garage, decided never again, and started shopping. Good instinct, wrong starting point — he was comparing lift models before he knew a single thing about his slab. That’s the most common mistake first-time home buyers make, and it’s the reason we wrote this guide. Measure Your Slab Before You Shop Anything

Residential garage slabs in Iowa are all over the map. A 1960s attached garage might be three and a half inches of unreinforced concrete over dirt. A 2015 build is more likely four inches with fiber mesh or wire. A purpose-built shop pour could be six inches with rebar on 18-inch centers. Those three floors support wildly different equipment, and you cannot tell them apart by looking.

The cheapest way to find out is to drill a test hole with a hammer drill and a long masonry bit in an inconspicuous corner, then measure the depth to soil with a bent wire. Do it in two or three spots, because pours are rarely uniform — edges are often thinner than the middle, and the area near an old drain or a settled backfill can be substantially worse. A rotary hammer core sample gives you even better information, including whether there’s a vapor barrier and what the base material looks like. Write those numbers down. Every conversation you have about a car lift automotive purchase from that point forward starts with them, and any dealer who doesn’t ask about your slab is not looking out for you.

What Rebar Actually Does — and Doesn’t

People assume rebar is what holds a lift down. It isn’t, not directly. Anchors get their holding power from the concrete’s compressive strength and from having enough undisturbed material around and beneath the anchor — that’s why manufacturers specify minimum edge distance, usually six to twelve inches from any expansion joint, saw cut, or slab edge. Rebar’s job is to keep the slab from cracking apart when it does flex, which preserves that surrounding material.

So a four-inch reinforced slab genuinely outperforms a four-inch unreinforced one over time, even though both technically meet a manufacturer’s stated thickness minimum. Fiber mesh helps with surface cracking but does almost nothing structurally. Wire mesh that sank to the bottom during the pour — extremely common — helps less than the spec sheet implies. If you’re pouring new for a car lift automotive installation, put #4 rebar on 18-inch centers, use 4,000 PSI mix, and pour six inches. It’s a marginal cost increase on a new pour and it removes the question permanently. And do not drill anchors into concrete younger than 28 days no matter how solid it looks — green concrete simply hasn’t developed the strength the anchor calculations assume.

Two-Post, Four-Post, or Mid-Rise for a Home Garage

For wheel bearing work specifically, the Waterloo buyer needed wheels-free access — hubs off, knuckle exposed, room to swing a press or a slide hammer. That points at either a two-post or a four-post with a rolling bridge jack.

A two-post gives you the cleanest wheels-free access and the smallest footprint, but it makes the most demands on your slab and needs solid ceiling height for the overhead bar. A four-post is far more forgiving of marginal concrete because it spreads the load across four wide baseplates, it can be left unanchored in many configurations, it doubles as vehicle storage, and it rolls out of the way on casters — but you need a rolling jack accessory to get the wheels off, and that’s an extra purchase. A mid-rise scissor is a compromise: modest slab requirements, low ceiling tolerance, easy storage, but limited under-car standing room. We ended up steering the Waterloo garage toward a four-post with a bridge jack, because his slab was four inches unreinforced and his ceiling was nine feet. Ceiling Height, Door Tracks, and the Tape Measure Test

Ceiling height kills more home projects than concrete does. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the drywall — that means garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, exposed joists, and any HVAC ductwork. Then subtract. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead beam typically wants around 12 feet minimum for full rise on a full-size truck. A baseplate two-post routes the hydraulic hose and equalization cables through the floor plate instead and lets you work under a much lower ceiling, at the cost of a bar you step over.

Four-posts vary widely; storage models with 6-foot rise fit comfortably under a 9-foot ceiling with a sedan on top, while a service-height four-post needs more. Here’s the practical test we tell people to run: pull the vehicle you care about most into the garage, measure its overall height, add your desired working clearance under the frame — most people want at least 60 inches to stand semi-upright — and add the lift’s own runway or arm thickness. If that total exceeds your lowest obstruction, you either lower your ambitions or relocate the opener to a jackshaft unit on the wall. Power, Placement, and the Boring Details That Matter

Most home-garage lifts run on 208-230V single phase and want a dedicated circuit — typically 20 or 30 amps depending on the motor. A few smaller units offer 110V power packs, which are slower and harder on the motor but let you skip an electrician. If you’re already running a welder or a compressor circuit, an electrician can usually add a properly sized branch without a service upgrade, and it’s rarely a big-ticket item on a residential panel.

Placement deserves as much thought as power. Leave door swing clearance on both sides of the vehicle. Keep the power unit on the side where you’ll stand. Think about where the drain pan goes and whether you can still get a rolling toolbox past the columns. Check that a raised vehicle won’t block your access to the water heater, the electrical panel, or the door into the house — building inspectors care about that last one. And measure your approach: if the driveway slopes up into the garage, a low-clearance car has to clear the four-post’s approach ramps at an angle, which sometimes means adding extended ramps. None of these details are exciting, but they’re the ones that decide whether the equipment gets used weekly or becomes an expensive shelf.

Plenty of home four-posts get assembled by a competent owner and a couple of friends over a weekend. They ship as runways, columns, crossbeams, cables, and a power unit, and the manual is usually decent. If you’re mechanically confident, have an engine hoist or a tractor loader to lift the runways, and you’re patient about cable equalization, self-install is realistic.

Standing a 700-pound column upright in a residential garage without proper rigging is genuinely dangerous, and anchor torque, column plumb, and lock synchronization all have to be right or the equipment develops problems you won’t notice until it matters.
