The best car lift automotive install we did last spring wasn’t for a dealership or a big franchise shop — it was for a small RV and trailer service outfit along the Iowa-Illinois corridor that had spent nine years doing oil changes on ramps and creepers. The owner called us in February with a simple question: could he fit a real lift in a bay that also had to swallow a 32-foot travel trailer twice a week? We drove out, measured the slab, checked the door header, and told him yes — with conditions. What follows is that first year, start to finish: the layout decisions, the workflow changes, the mistakes, and what he’d do differently if he did it over.

Why a Drive-On Beat a Two-Post for This Bay

His first instinct was a two-post. That’s most shops’ first instinct, and for general repair it’s usually right. But this shop’s bread and butter is fluid service on tow vehicles, dually pickups, and the occasional Class B van — vehicles with long wheelbases, low-hanging skid plates, and frame rails that don’t always match what a two-post arm chart expects. Every time you set a heavy 3/4-ton on swing arms you’re spending three or four minutes finding pinch weld pads and double-checking the lift points. Multiply that by eighteen oil changes a day and you’ve burned an hour of billable time on nothing but positioning.

A drive-on 4-post kills that overhead. The tech pulls forward until the front tire hits the stop, sets the parking brake, hits the up button, and he’s under the vehicle in forty seconds. For a shop where the majority of tickets are oil, filters, differential fluid, and chassis lube, that’s the correct piece of equipment. We spec’d a 14,000 lb capacity model with extended 185-inch runways so a long-bed crew cab wouldn’t hang off the back. The extra capacity wasn’t about weight — it was about ramp length and stability under a vehicle whose center of gravity sits high. When a car lift automotive purchase is driven by workflow rather than brand loyalty, the answer usually gets clearer fast.

Measuring the Bay Before Anyone Ordered Anything

We spent most of the first site visit with a tape measure and a rotary hammer. Ceiling height was 13 feet 2 inches to the bottom of the truss — plenty for a 4-post, but we still had to route the overhead crossbar and the equalization cable sheaves so they cleared a shop light circuit the owner didn’t want to move. The slab was original 1987 pour, and the core sample came back at just under five inches of decent concrete with no visible rebar. That’s borderline. For a two-post we would have insisted on a cut-and-pour footing. For a 4-post, which distributes load through eight baseplate points instead of two columns fighting overturning moment, five inches was acceptable — and that’s another reason the drive-on won.

The real constraint was the trailer door. The overhead door on the north end had to stay clear so a fifth-wheel could roll straight through to the back bay. That meant offsetting the lift 40 inches toward the east wall and giving up a workbench. He grumbled about the bench. Six months later he told me losing it was the best thing that happened to his shop, because it forced him to move parts staging to a rolling cart instead of a pile of open oil jugs on a counter. Installation Week and the Anchor Surprise

Installation took a day and a half, which is about typical for a 4-post when the site is prepped and we’re not fighting the concrete. Day one was uncrating, laying out column positions, setting runways, and running the hydraulic lines. Day two was cable routing, safety lock adjustment, filling and bleeding the power unit, and cycling the lift under load. We put 6,000 pounds on it, ran it top to bottom a dozen times, and checked lock engagement at every height.

The surprise came at the northwest column. Two of the four anchor holes hit a buried conduit run nobody knew existed — old wiring from when the building was a grain equipment dealership. We stopped, shifted the column footprint three inches, re-drilled, and epoxy-anchored instead of using wedge anchors so we could get full pullout strength in a shorter embedment. That’s the kind of thing that turns a DIY install into a three-week nightmare and a professional install into a two-hour delay. If you’re evaluating a car lift automotive package on price alone, understand that the freight discount you found online does not include somebody who knows what to do when the drill bit hits copper. We’ve walked into plenty of shops where a well-meaning owner anchored into a slab crack and never knew it until the column started walking.

Building the Oil Service Workflow Around the Runways

Once the lift was live, the shop rebuilt its whole fluid service routine around it. The old process was: jack, stands, crawl, drain into a low-profile pan, slide out, hoist the pan to a waste tank. The new process is: drive on, raise to 52 inches, roll the drain cart underneath, pull the plug, and stand up straight the whole time. They added a 25-gallon rolling waste evacuation unit and a hose reel drop for the air ratchet so nothing lives on the floor.

Filter access changed too. On a 4-post the vehicle sits on its own suspension, which means the exhaust and skid plates are in their natural loaded position — exactly where the service manual assumes they’ll be. Techs stopped fighting cartridge housings that had been swinging free on a two-post. The shop also picked up a sliding jack tray so they could still do brake and tire work on the same equipment; that’s the accessory nearly every drive-on owner adds within the first six months, and buying it up front saves a freight charge. One thing we recommend to every car lift automotive buyer doing volume fluid work: put a drip tray under the engine bay position from day one. Cleaning oil off runway decking is miserable, and stained decking is the fastest way to make a two-year-old lift look ten.

Maintenance the First Twelve Months

The maintenance load on a drive-on is light, but it isn’t zero. We set him up with a 30-day, 90-day, and annual checklist. At 30 days we came back out and re-torqued the anchors — every anchor relaxes slightly after initial load cycling, and skipping that check is the single most common oversight we see. We also re-checked cable tension, because equalization cables stretch during break-in and a lift that’s a half inch out of level at the runways will feel fine but wear the sheaves unevenly.

At 90 days he did his own visual: cable condition at the sheave contact points, lock pawl engagement sound, hydraulic fluid level, and a look under the power unit for weeping fittings. At the twelve-month mark we did a full inspection to ANSI/ALI guidelines, replaced the hydraulic fluid, greased the slider blocks on the rolling jack, and adjusted one lock that was engaging a beat late. Total downtime for the year: about three hours. Total unplanned failures: zero. That’s what maintained equipment looks like. The shops that call us with a dead lift at 8 a.m. on a Monday are almost never the shops with a checklist taped to the column. A car lift automotive investment holds its value through service records, and if he ever sells the building, that binder is worth real money to a buyer.

What the Numbers Looked Like After Twelve Months

He tracked it, which is rarer than it should be. Before the lift, an average oil-and-filter service on a 3/4-ton with a skid plate took him 38 minutes bay-to-bay. After, it took 21. On differential and transfer case service the gap was wider — a job that used to eat 90 minutes on stands now runs 45. He added a Saturday half-day for RV chassis service because he could finally get under a Class C without a pit, and that alone paid a meaningful chunk of the equipment cost.

Ticket mix changed too. When you can put a vehicle in the air in under a minute, you start doing free undercarriage inspections on every oil change, and free inspections turn into brake quotes, exhaust quotes, and ball joint quotes. That’s not a sales trick — it’s just visibility. Half the time the customer had no idea the trailing arm bushings were shot because nobody had ever looked. What He’d Do Differently — and What We’d Tell You

Three things. First, he’d have bought the longer runways from the start instead of the standard length — he ordered extended and still occasionally wishes he’d gone longer for fifth-wheel tow rigs. Runway length is the cheapest upgrade at order time and the most expensive regret later. Second, he’d have run the air and electrical drops during install week while the ceiling was already open and the electrician was already on site. Doing it four months later cost him a full shop day and a second trip charge. Third, he’d have bought the rolling jack immediately rather than waiting for the busy season to prove he needed it.

What we’d add: don’t buy on capacity number alone. A 14,000 lb rating sounds like more lift than a 12,000 lb rating, but if the runways are short and the columns are close together, the bigger number is useless to you. Measure your longest regular vehicle, your widest, and your lowest, then spec around all three. And get the concrete verified before the freight truck shows up, not after.
