When a car lift automotive purchase goes into an RV and trailer service shop, the math is different than it is for a general repair garage. The vehicles are longer, the wheelbases are stretched, the tongue weights are strange, and the brake work is constant — trailer rotors, drum conversions, and axle service on units that never sat on a standard four-wheel alignment rack. Why an RV and trailer shop needs different numbers than a car shop
The first conversation we had with this shop was about capacity, and the first thing we did was talk them out of the number they had in their head. They had been quoted a 7,000 lb unit by an online seller because that is what fits a light-duty budget. Their actual work mix included Class C motorhomes, one-ton service trucks, and tandem-axle enclosed trailers loaded with tools. A 7,000 lb rating covers almost none of that with margin, and margin is the whole point. We do not spec to the heaviest thing a customer has ever seen; we spec to the heaviest thing they will realistically roll in on a Tuesday afternoon, plus the cargo nobody unloads first.
Length matters just as much as weight, and this is where shops get burned. A 4-post runway that handles a crew-cab dually beautifully will leave a 31-foot motorhome hanging off both ends with the rear axle nowhere near the rear runway support. We measured their bay, measured their longest recurring unit, and landed on extended runways with a wider drive-through width so trailers with flared fenders would clear. That single dimension change added lead time and cost, and it is the reason the lift is still useful two years into their growth instead of being the thing they replaced. What ALI Gold certification actually meant on this job
ALI Gold certification comes up in almost every quote conversation, and most shop owners nod along without knowing what they are nodding at. Here is the short version: the Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party program where a lift model is tested by an independent lab against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, and the certification covers the specific model and capacity configuration — not the brand generally. That gold label on the leg means somebody outside the factory loaded that design, cycled it, and verified the safety systems, load holding, and the labeling package. It is not marketing. It is the only third-party verification that exists in this industry.
For this Cedar Rapids shop it mattered for two practical reasons. First, their insurance carrier asked for documentation during a walkthrough, and having a certified model with a legible serial plate and a manual in the file ended that conversation in about ninety seconds. Second, they do warranty and fleet work for a couple of larger accounts, and those accounts have equipment requirements written into their vendor terms. Uncertified imports get flagged. We have watched shops lose fleet contracts over exactly that. The concrete survey nobody wants to pay for
Their building was a 1980s pole-frame shop with a slab poured in sections, and the section under the intended bay was the part we could not vouch for. ANSI and every manufacturer install manual specify minimum thickness and compressive strength — typically four to six inches of 3,000 PSI or better depending on the model and capacity, with edge distance requirements from any joint or trench. We cored two test holes. One came back at just over four inches with decent aggregate; the other came back thin over a fill pocket near an old floor drain that had been patched at some point.
That is not an unusual finding in Iowa. Older shops around Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha have been added onto, and the slab tells the story of every addition. The fix here was a saw-cut and repour of a pad under the two columns on the bad side, about eight inches thick and tied properly, then a cure period before we set anchors. It added roughly a week and a few hundred dollars in concrete work. Compare that to what happens when anchors pull under a loaded motorhome. We would rather delay an install than set anchors in something we do not trust. Brake service and rotor swaps: how the workflow actually changed
Before the lift, this shop did trailer brake work on jack stands and creepers, and heavy rotor swaps on a portable jack with a helper. Their labor times on a tandem-axle brake job were somewhere north of five hours because half of it was positioning and repositioning. After the install, with a set of sliding rolling jacks on the runways, the same job runs closer to three. That is not a manufacturer claim — that is what their own tickets showed us when we came back for the first service.
The rolling jacks are the part people skip to save money and then buy six months later. On a 4-post, the runways carry the vehicle by its tires, which is exactly wrong for brake and axle work. You need the wheels free. Rolling jacks lift at the axle or frame so you can pull hubs, swap rotors, adjust brake shoes, and check bearing play with everything hanging where it should. This shop bought two, and they use both on almost every tandem job. We also set them up with a spare pair of jack pad extensions, because RV and trailer frames sit at wildly inconsistent heights and the factory pad stack does not always reach. Small parts, big difference in whether the equipment gets used the way it was intended.
Month three: the first real problem
About ninety days in we got a call — the lift was drifting down slowly overnight, maybe an inch and a half by morning. The owner assumed a bad cylinder and was already braced for bad news. It was not the cylinder. It was a slightly weeping fitting on the power unit side and a check valve seat with debris on it, both of which are ordinary break-in issues on any hydraulic system that just got filled and cycled for the first time. We flushed, replaced the fitting, cleaned the valve, topped the fluid, and it has held ever since.
We bring this up because drift panics people into replacing expensive parts. On a hydraulic car lift automotive system, slow descent is almost always fluid path or valve related, not a failed cylinder. A cylinder that is truly gone leaks externally, and you will see it on the floor or down the column. Debris in a check valve, a loose JIC fitting, air still working out of the system, or a tired lowering valve solenoid account for the large majority of drift calls we run. The twelve-month inspection and what actually wore
ALI and every manufacturer we carry call for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and we did theirs at month twelve. Findings: cables within spec but showing normal seating wear at the sheaves, one slack safety latch needing adjustment, runway slip plates gummed up with road salt and grease, two anchor bolts a few foot-pounds under torque, and lock ladder pawls in good shape. Nothing dramatic. That is what a healthy first year looks like on a properly installed unit.
The salt is the eastern Iowa tax. Between November and March, everything that rolls onto a lift in this state carries brine, and brine finds cables, sheave bearings, and slip plates. We told them to pressure rinse the runways monthly in winter and to keep the cable ends and sheaves lightly lubricated with the manufacturer’s recommended product — not chain lube, not spray grease that turns to varnish. We also flagged that their cables would likely be a four-to-six year replacement item at their duty cycle rather than the ten-year figure people assume from residential use. Budget for it. What we would tell the next RV shop shopping for a lift
One year in, this shop would make the same purchase again with two changes: they would have bought the rolling jacks up front instead of three months later, and they would have paid for the concrete assessment before they got emotionally committed to a delivery date. Everything else — the extended runways, the ALI Gold certified model, the ceiling clearance check we insisted on because their overhead door track sat lower than the drawing suggested — held up.
