A collector we work with outside Cedar Rapids spent two winters doing shock and spring work on his cars flat on his back with a floor jack and four stands, and finally decided he was done. He wanted to store vehicles, get under them comfortably, and rebuild front suspensions without wrestling a coil spring at ankle height. Choosing Between Storage and Real Service Work

The first conversation was about what he actually wanted to do under the cars, because that single answer drives the whole purchase. Pure storage points at a four-post: drive on, raise, park a second car underneath, done. Pure service work — brakes, suspension, exhaust, anything where you want the wheels hanging free — points at a two-post, because the arms grab the frame and leave the suspension unloaded. He wanted both, which is the most common answer we hear from collectors and also the one that requires a compromise.

We landed on a four-post with a rolling bridge jack, and that combination is worth explaining. A four-post supports the vehicle on its tires, so the suspension stays compressed and you cannot pull a spring or a control arm. Add a rolling jack that spans the runways, and you can lift one axle off the runway surface, drop the wheels, and work with the suspension fully extended — the same access a two-post gives you, with the storage capability a two-post never will. The tradeoff is a little more setup time per job and a lift that eats more floor space. For a collector rotating six cars through a two-bay garage, that was the right call. If he had been running a business flipping brake jobs all day, we would have pushed him toward a two-post instead and told him to buy a separate storage rack.

Measuring the Garage Before Ordering Anything

His garage was a detached build with an eleven-foot ceiling at the peak and a garage door header that turned out to be the real constraint. We measure four things on every home visit in the Cedar Rapids area: true ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, clear width between walls and any parked-car door swing, the door opening height and header depth, and slab condition. Then we add the tallest vehicle in the collection to the runway height and the lift’s own structure to see what actually fits. In his case a full-height lift plus a mid-sixties coupe on top cleared, but a modern SUV on top would not have — good to know before, not after.

Slab is where home projects go sideways. A four-post spreads load across four base plates and is far more forgiving than a two-post, which concentrates enormous overturning force into a handful of anchors. That is one of the underrated advantages of four-post car lift automotive equipment in older residential garages: many can sit on the existing slab without anchoring at all, provided the concrete is sound, level within tolerance, and thick enough for the rated capacity. We still core-checked his slab because it was a 1970s pour with no records. It came back adequate. When it does not, the options are cutting footings, adding a pad, or switching to a portable design — and knowing that before freight arrives saves weeks.

Freight, Liftgates, and Why Residential Delivery Is Hard

Nobody thinks about freight until a semi is idling at the end of a residential street. A four-post ships as a crate of runways and columns plus a hardware pallet, and the whole thing runs well over a thousand pounds. Common carriers deliver curbside on a fifty-three-foot trailer. They do not carry it into your garage, they do not always have a liftgate unless you paid for one, and a liftgate cannot handle a long runway crate gracefully anyway. We have watched drivers refuse a residential address entirely because the truck could not turn around.

It costs a bit more than curbside and it eliminates the worst failure mode: a homeowner standing in a driveway with a crated lift, no equipment, and a driver on a schedule. If you do take direct residential delivery, insist on a liftgate, have a plan for the crate the moment it hits the ground, and inspect for shipping damage before signing — bent runway ends and dented columns happen, and a clean signature makes a damage claim nearly impossible to win. Forklift Logistics on a Residential Install

Getting the crate off a trailer and into position is the part that separates a smooth install from a bad day. On a commercial site there is usually a forklift already. At a house, there is not. We bring our own equipment when the site allows it, but residential access is the variable — soft turf after an Iowa spring rain, a narrow side yard, a paved apron too short to maneuver on, or a garage floor at a step up from grade. We look at all of it during the site survey and decide then whether it is a forklift job, a skid-steer-with-forks job, or a pipe-rollers-and-patience job.

At this property the driveway ran right to the garage door on level pavement, so a forklift walked the crate in and set the runways down inside. That is the ideal. When it is not available, the fallback is uncrating outside and carrying components in individually — columns are manageable with two people and a strap, runways are heavy and awkward and want four hands and rollers. What we tell every collector: do not plan to do this alone on a Saturday. The most common home-install injuries we hear about involve a runway that got away from someone. Assembly Day and the Details That Matter Later

Installation on his four-post took most of a day. Columns get set and plumbed, runways go on the crossbeams, cables get routed through the sheaves and tensioned, the hydraulic power unit gets mounted and plumbed, and then everything gets bled and cycled empty before a vehicle ever touches it. The two steps that determine how the lift behaves for the next fifteen years are cable equalization and level. Cables that are off by even a small amount make runways rise unevenly, which loads the columns wrong and puts strain on the slack safeties. We set them, cycle the lift several times to let everything seat, and set them again — because they always move on the first few cycles.

Level is the other one. A garage floor with a drainage slope is normal, and the fix is shimming the base plates until the runways are level to each other and the safety locks engage simultaneously at every height. Skipping this is why some owners report a lift that clunks or sits with one corner low. We also spent time on the small stuff that pays off: routing the hydraulic hose where it will not get run over, mounting the power unit at a height he can actually reach, setting the drip trays, and adding caster kits so he can roll the whole lift aside in summer. Finally we ran a loaded test cycle with one of his cars and walked him through the lock release procedure twice, because that is the step people forget.

The First Suspension Job

Six weeks in, he tackled the job that motivated the whole purchase: front shocks, springs, and upper control arm bushings on a heavy old sedan. This is where the rolling jack earned its cost. He drove up, raised the lift to a comfortable working height, set the jack under the front crossmember, and lifted the front wheels clear of the runways. With the suspension hanging free he could compress the spring with a proper compressor at chest height instead of fighting it on a creeper. What used to be a full weekend became an afternoon, and — his words — his back stopped voting against the hobby.

A few things we coached him on that apply to anyone doing suspension work on a four-post. Always set the runway locks before putting weight on the rolling jack, and never rely on the hydraulics alone. Watch your lift point: on unibody cars the pinch weld or designated jack pad is the only safe contact, and a crossmember that looks solid may not be. Keep the vehicle’s weight distribution in mind when you unload one axle — pulling both front springs shifts the balance, and the wheel chocks and rear locks are what keep everything honest. And be aware that a rolling jack has its own lower capacity rating than the lift itself. He also learned to keep a set of tall stands nearby for anything he was going to leave apart overnight. Twelve Months Later: What Maintenance Actually Looked Like

At the one-year mark we came back for the first service call, and there was less to do than he expected. We checked cable tension and found it had drifted slightly, which is completely normal in year one as the cables stretch and seat. We re-equalized, greased the sheaves and slider blocks, checked the hydraulic fluid level and topped it, inspected the slack-cable safeties, cycled the lift through every lock position, and looked at the anchors and base shims. Total time on site was under two hours. That is the pattern for a well-installed four-post in a residential setting — small adjustments, not repairs.

His own routine between visits was simple and it is what we recommend to every collector. Look at the cables before each use, particularly at the sheave contact points where broken strands show up first. Keep the runways and slide blocks clean of grit, especially through an Iowa winter when cars drag salt in. Check the hydraulic fluid twice a year. Never leave a vehicle parked on the hydraulics alone — lower onto the mechanical locks every single time. And once a year, have someone qualified inspect it, because the failure modes that matter are the ones you cannot see from the driver’s seat. A well-maintained lift will outlast most of the cars parked under it.
