Step One: Identify the Lift Brand and Model Before You Shop Cable

Every decision tree starts with the same branch: what lift do you actually own? We get calls every week from shops that say “it’s a two-post, probably ten thousand pounds” — that’s not enough to spec a car lift cable correctly. The nameplate riveted to the column or base will have a model number, and that model number determines cable diameter, construction (7×19 vs 7×7 strand), swage fitting type, and overall length down to the inch. A Rotary SPO10 does not use the same cable as a Challenger CL10, even though they look similar from across the shop floor.

For restoration shops doing a lot of tire rotation and wheel service, the lift usually runs longer hours than a shop doing occasional alignment work, which means cables wear faster and get replaced more often. That’s exactly why we tell every shop on the Iowa-Nebraska border to write down their model number and keep it taped inside the electrical panel. When you call for a car lift cable, we ask for that number first — not the brand, not the capacity, the actual model. Step Two: Budget Branch — Economy vs OEM-Spec Replacement

Once model is confirmed, the tree splits on budget. Shops that just need the lift running again for tire and wheel work often ask for the cheapest cable that fits. We can source that, but we’ll tell you plainly: a bargain car lift cable with a lower-grade galvanized strand and a stamped fitting will often stretch or fray inside a year of daily rotation-and-balance work. If your shop runs the lift ten or more times a day, that’s a bad trade.

The other branch is OEM-spec replacement — matched strand construction, proper swage, correct length — priced a bit higher but built to run the full service interval before you touch it again. Most restoration shops we work with on the Nebraska side end up here after one bad experience with the economy option. Step Three: Configuration Branch — Two-Post, Four-Post, or Scissor

Configuration changes cable count and routing dramatically. A two-post asymmetric lift typically runs one cable per column with a specific pulley path, while a four-post or parking lift can have four to eight cables plus equalizer cables tying columns together. Get the configuration wrong on your order and you’ll receive a single cable when you needed a matched set — and matched sets matter because mismatched cable tension on a four-post lift causes uneven platform lift, which is a safety issue, not just an annoyance.

Scissor and mid-rise lifts add another wrinkle: some use cable, others use chain, and a few hybrid designs use both depending on the model year. If your shop can’t tell from looking, send us photos of the column or platform along with the model number. Step Four: Length and Diameter — Where Most Orders Go Wrong

Length and diameter are the two specs shops get wrong most often, even after nailing brand, model, and configuration. Cable length isn’t just the runout distance — it includes the swaged loop or fitting on each end, and a half-inch discrepancy there can mean the cable won’t seat properly in the sheave or won’t reach the anchor point at full extension. Diameter tolerances are just as tight; a cable that’s a fraction of a millimeter off can bind in the pulley groove and wear unevenly within weeks.

We measure twice against the manufacturer spec sheet before any car lift cable ships from our shop, and we recommend every restoration shop do the same on the receiving end — measure the old cable before installing the new one, even when it’s coming from a known-good source. Iowa and Nebraska humidity swings can also affect stored inventory cable over a season, so we rotate stock rather than let cable sit on a shelf for years before it reaches your lift.

Step Five: Signs Your Current Cable Needs Replacing Now, Not Later

Shops doing constant tire rotation and wheel work put more load cycles through a cable than almost any other service bay use case, and that shows up early in visible wear. Look for frayed strands near the sheave contact points, flattened sections where the cable rides the pulley groove repeatedly, rust bleeding through the outer strands, or a lift that settles slightly on one side after being raised. Any one of those is reason enough to order a replacement car lift cable before it fails mid-lift.

We’ve talked to shops after a cable snapped under load — it’s not a subtle failure, and it usually means the vehicle drops unevenly and the hydraulic system starts bypassing as it tries to compensate. That’s an expensive, dangerous way to learn the lesson early. Building an inspection habit — a thirty-second visual check before your first lift of the day — costs nothing and catches the wear pattern long before it becomes a snapped cable and a shop shutdown.

Step Six: Ordering the Right Cable the First Time

Once you’ve worked through brand, model, budget, configuration, and wear signs, ordering becomes simple: give us the model number, tell us which column or position needs the cable, and confirm quantity if it’s a matched set.
