A car lift changes how you use a garage, but the first year of ownership is mostly a series of small lessons nobody puts in the brochure. We installed a two-post for a collector in the Des Moines metro about fourteen months ago — six vehicles, three of them worth more than the building they sit in, and a growing frustration with crawling around on a creeper. He agreed to let us write up how the first year actually went, from the day we cored his slab through his first real service job, a rear wheel bearing on a mid-eighties German coupe. Why a Collector Went Two-Post Instead of Four-Post

Most collectors we talk to assume they want a four-post. It makes sense on paper: drive on, park, stack a second vehicle underneath, no swing arms to position, no worrying about lift points on a car with unibody rocker panels and forty-year-old sheet metal. Plenty of our home-garage customers go exactly that route and are thrilled. This customer started there too. What changed his mind was the work he actually wanted to do — suspension, brakes, exhaust, and eventually the wheel bearing job. On a four-post the wheels are loaded on the runways, so any of that requires rolling jacks and an extra step.

He had 12-foot ceilings and a 30×40 building, which gave him options. We specced an asymmetric two-post with a low-profile arm set, 10,000 lb capacity, and screw-pad adapters tall enough to reach the pinch welds on the older cars without touching rocker trim. Storage was the tradeoff: he gives up the ability to park one car over another. His solution was to keep the two-post for work and add a four-post in the second bay a year later for winter storage. That combination is common in the Des Moines metro among people with real collections, and honestly it is what we would do. Install Week: Concrete, Power, and the Things That Slow a Job Down

His slab was poured in 2011 and he thought it was five inches. It was four and a quarter in the bay we wanted, with rebar on twelve-inch centers, which is workable for a 10,000 lb unit but right at the edge. We cored two test holes, confirmed the depth, and set the columns where the concrete was thickest and furthest from the control joints. That last part matters more than people realize. Anchoring within six inches of an expansion joint or a slab edge is a common DIY mistake and it is why we get calls from owners whose columns have started to shift after a season of use.

Power was the other holdup. He had a single 220V outlet for a welder on the far wall, and the hoist needed a dedicated circuit near the powerside column. An electrician handled that in an afternoon, but it delayed us two days because nobody had scoped it before the equipment arrived. If you take one piece of planning advice from this whole article: figure out your electrical before your car lift ships. We also had to pull a garage door opener rail and relocate it, which is nearly universal in residential installs with 12-foot walls. Total install time once the concrete and power were sorted was most of one day, including cable tensioning, arm restraint verification, and cycling the unit under load a dozen times with him watching.

Arm Restraints: The Part Nobody Reads About Until Something Slips

Arm restraints are the toothed gear-and-pawl mechanism at the base of each swing arm that locks the arm’s rotation once the vehicle’s weight settles onto the pads. Their whole job is to stop an arm from swinging out from under a vehicle during lifting or while the car is in the air. On a properly functioning unit, you position the arm, raise until the pad contacts, and the restraint engages automatically as the load comes on. You should feel and hear it. If you can still swing the arm freely with weight on it, stop and call somebody.

Our customer’s first-year education came about three months in. He noticed one front arm had a bit of rotational play under load that the other three did not. He called instead of ignoring it, which we appreciated. What we found was a restraint gear with debris packed into the teeth — road salt, grit, and old grease from a winter of driving cars straight into the shop. Cleaned, inspected, regreased, and it engaged crisply again. That is a fifteen-minute fix if you catch it and a serious incident if you do not. Arm restraints are a wear item. The pawl spring weakens, the teeth wear, the pivot pin gets sloppy. We check them on every service call and we stock replacement restraint kits for the major brands. A car lift with dead restraints is not a safe lift, full stop, no matter how good the hydraulics feel.

Safety-Cam Engagement: Listen for the Clicks, Then Set It Down

The other mechanism he had to build habits around is the safety cam — the spring-loaded latch inside each column that drops into a locking ladder as the carriage rises. Hydraulics hold the vehicle while you are raising it. Safety latches hold it while you work. Those are two different jobs and the whole design assumes you will use the latches. The correct routine is: raise past your working height, then lower slightly until you hear both columns click into the same latch position, and confirm the vehicle sits level before you get under it.

He admitted that for the first few weeks he was leaving vehicles resting on hydraulic pressure alone because he did not want the small drop. We hear that a lot. The problem is that hydraulic systems leak — slowly, usually, but they do. We get emergency calls where somebody has a vehicle in the air, the cylinder is weeping, and they cannot bring it down safely. One caller from Florida had a four-post with a leaking cylinder and a car stuck up high; he could not even tell us the brand. Those calls end fine most of the time, but they are avoidable. Latches carry the load mechanically and they do not care about seal condition. Learn to listen for both clicks. The First Real Job: A Rear Wheel Bearing at Chest Height

Nine months in, the coupe developed a rising growl on left-hand sweepers — classic rear wheel bearing. That job on the floor means jack stands, a creeper, a slide hammer swung at an awkward angle, and a press setup somewhere else in the garage. In the air it is a completely different task. He set the vehicle at roughly chest height on the second latch, pulled the wheel, and had clean access to the hub carrier from both sides with a light and a torque wrench.

What he told us afterward is what most people say: it was not that the job got faster, it was that it stopped being miserable. He did it in an evening, took his time on the press fit, and torqued the axle nut to spec because he could actually see the wrench. He also caught two things he would never have found on the floor — a cracked rear subframe bushing and a fuel line rubbing a bracket. That is the quiet argument for a car lift in a collector’s garage. Vehicles that sit get problems that only show from underneath, and if getting underneath is a two-hour ordeal you simply do not look. Once looking is easy, you find things early, which is the entire game with cars that are hard to source parts for.

Year-One Maintenance and What It Cost Him

Here is what the first year of upkeep actually involved. Monthly: a visual on the equalization cables for fraying or slack, a look at both safety latches cycling freely, and a wipe-down of the cylinder rods. Quarterly: grease the arm restraint gears and the arm pivot pins, check the hydraulic fluid level, and verify the arms still sit at matched heights. Once at the twelve-month mark: a full inspection by us, including cable tension adjustment, anchor torque re-check, and a load test.

Cost-wise, year one was cheap — a jug of hydraulic fluid, a tube of grease, and one annual inspection visit. Anchor bolts had loosened slightly, which is completely normal in the first year as the anchors seat into the concrete, and re-torquing them took ten minutes. His cables had stretched about the amount we expected and needed a minor adjustment. That is the whole point of a first-year inspection: everything settles, and catching the settling keeps small things small. Budget an annual service visit into your ownership plan, the same way you would for a furnace. What We’d Tell the Next Collector Calling Us

Buy more capacity than your heaviest vehicle by a comfortable margin, especially if you might add a truck or an SUV later. Confirm your ceiling height and your garage door track situation before you order. Get the electrical scoped early. Insist on a slab core test rather than a guess about thickness. And pick a brand whose parts we can still get in fifteen years — the rebuild kits, cables, and restraint assemblies are what keep this equipment alive long past the warranty.

Then learn the two habits that matter most: verify your arm restraints engage every single time you set pads, and set the vehicle down onto matched safety latches before you go underneath. Everything else about owning a car lift is genuinely easy. Those two things are what separate a tool you trust from a tool that eventually hurts somebody.
