A collector across the river in western Illinois called us about eighteen months ago wanting a car lift for a new detached garage he was building specifically to store and work on six vehicles. He had a slab date, a framing crew, an electrician, and no idea which of those three needed to know about the lift first. The answer, it turns out, is all of them — and in a specific order. We installed the unit that fall, he ran it through a full year including an ugly oil pan gasket job on a small-block, and he was generous enough to let us write up how it actually went. This is that story: sequencing, install day, the surprises, and what he would do differently.

Month one: the slab conversation nobody has early enough

He called us in March, which was lucky, because the concrete was not going in until May. That gave us time to change the pour. His builder had spec’d a standard four-inch slab at 3,500 PSI with fiber — perfectly adequate for a garage floor, and technically adequate for most two-post anchors. But we asked for a thickened section: an eight-by-twenty-foot pad at six inches, tied into the surrounding slab, in the bay where the lift would live. The upcharge was small compared to the cost of the building, and it eliminated the anchor question permanently.

The other thing we changed was the control of joints. Slab crews put saw cuts wherever the layout suggests, and more than once we have arrived at a job where a control joint runs directly through the anchor pattern of one column. You cannot anchor into a joint, and you cannot move the joint after the fact. So we gave the builder a chalk footprint — column centers, overall width, and a two-foot keep-out radius around each base — and asked him to route joints around it. He did. On install day every one of the twelve anchors landed in solid, uncracked concrete, which is the single biggest reason that job went smoothly. If you are building new and thinking about a car lift, the slab is the first decision, not the last.

Month two: ceiling height, doors, and the truss surprise

Framing revealed the usual problem. On paper the garage had fourteen-foot sidewalls, which sounds like plenty. In reality the scissor trusses dropped to about twelve feet two inches at the point where he wanted the columns, and the overhead garage door track plus opener rail cut into the clear space near the front. An overhead two-post with a crossbar wants clearance for the beam plus the tallest vehicle you intend to raise, and he had a tall project truck in the mix.

We ended up with two changes. First, he moved the lift bay one bay back, away from the door track, which cost him nothing at the framing stage and would have cost him a lot later. Second, we specified a baseplate two-post instead of an overhead model. The hydraulic hose and the equalizer cables route through a low floor channel rather than across the ceiling, so the only vertical limit is the vehicle itself. He gained roughly fourteen inches of usable lift height. The tradeoff is the floor channel — you drive over a low steel plate — and honestly he has never once mentioned it as a negative. For anyone planning a garage around a car lift, get the lift decision made before the trusses are ordered. Changing a truss profile in the design phase is a phone call. Changing it after delivery is a new building.

Month three: power, air, and drainage before drywall

The electrician was on site before the walls were closed, which is exactly where you want him. Most single-phase power units in this class run on 220V, and the smart move is a dedicated circuit with a disconnect within sight of the lift, positioned on the operator side. He put in a 30-amp 220V outlet at the column location plus a second one across the shop for a future welder, and we had him run a 110V circuit up high for a drop light and a reel.

He also ran air lines while the studs were open — one drop at the lift, one at the bench, one at the back door for tires. Air matters more than people expect on a two-post because the safety lock release on many models is air-actuated, and running a shop compressor line to the column is cleaner than the little onboard options. The last pre-drywall item was drainage and floor slope. A storage garage with six vehicles in Illinois winters brings in a shocking amount of salt slush. He sloped the floor toward a trench drain along the back wall rather than a center point drain, which kept the entire lift bay flat and level — critical, because you do not want the columns of a car lift standing on a slope. Little decisions, all of them impossible to fix later.

Install day: what actually happens in six hours

Our crew showed up early with the columns, carriage assembly, arms, power unit, and a rotary hammer, plus a laser and a torque wrench that matter more than the hammer does. The sequence is straightforward but unforgiving: lay out the column centers off a reference wall, verify square with diagonals, verify the slab thickness by drilling a test hole and measuring, set the first column and plumb it, set the second to the exact specified spacing, drill all anchors, hammer and torque to spec, then plumb both columns again and shim as needed.

Shimming is where amateur installs go wrong. Almost no garage floor is dead flat, and a column that leans a quarter degree out of plumb will bind the carriage and wear the slide blocks unevenly for the rest of its life. We shim under the base plate with steel shims, re-torque, and re-check with the laser. Then comes hydraulics — mount the power unit, route the hose, fill with the specified fluid, bleed thoroughly, cycle the lift a dozen times empty, then test the safety locks under load. Total time was a little under six hours including the anchor test and cleanup. He watched most of it, which we encourage. Understanding how the locks engage and where the bleeder is turns a car lift owner into someone who can troubleshoot a small problem instead of calling in a panic.

The first real job: an oil pan gasket at chest height

Storage was the stated reason he bought it. The oil pan gasket on a small-block was the job that converted him. He had been putting that repair off for two years because doing it on jack stands means lying in a puddle of used oil with your arms above your head, dropping the crossmember bolts into your own face, and losing an entire weekend. On the lift, he had the car at chest height, a drain pan on a rolling cart underneath, and full standing access to the pan rail.

He told us the job took about four hours including cleanup, and that the biggest revelation was not the height — it was being able to walk around. You can see both sides of the engine, reach the bellhousing bolts, and set your torque wrench properly instead of at whatever angle your shoulder allows. He also caught two things he had not been looking for: a weeping rear main seal starting to darken the bellhousing, and a rusted-through section of exhaust hanger that would have dropped a pipe by spring. That is the underrated value of a car lift for a collector. Every time a vehicle goes up, you get a free full inspection. Over a year of storing and rotating six cars, he found a leaking fuel line, a torn CV boot, and a cracked sway bar bushing he never would have seen from the driveway.

Twelve months in: maintenance, habits, and one mistake

Maintenance has been minimal, which is what should happen. He checks hydraulic fluid level monthly, greases the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivot pins on a schedule, wipes and inspects the equalizer cables twice a year, and cycles the lift fully at least once a month even when nothing needs work. That last habit is one we push hard on storage owners: a unit that sits at the same height for six months develops corrosion and set at the exact cable-to-sheave contact point, and cycling it moves the wear around.

The one mistake was a good learning experience. Early on he left a vehicle parked on the arms at full height, resting on hydraulic pressure rather than lowering it onto the mechanical safety locks. After a few days it had crept down about an inch. Nothing was damaged, but it scared him, and it should. Hydraulic cylinders seep. That is why every lift has mechanical locks, and why the correct procedure is always raise past your working height, then lower onto the locks and hear both sides click. We get emergency calls constantly from people with a vehicle stuck in the air because a cylinder was leaking and nothing was on the locks. His summary of year one: he wishes he had done it a decade earlier, and he wishes he had bought the higher capacity model so the project truck was never a question.
