A car lift is one of the few pieces of shop equipment you buy once and then live with for twenty years, which is exactly why the first year of ownership tells you more than any brochure ever will. We install and service lifts across Iowa from our base in Ames, and one of the installs we think about most often is an RV and trailer service shop near Davenport that added a passenger-vehicle bay to its lineup. They had spent a decade wrenching on tandem-axle trailers and Class C motorhomes on the floor, and they wanted a proper hoist so their techs could stop crawling under cars for transmission work. Here is how that first year actually went, from the site survey through the first real service call.

The Site Survey Nobody Wants to Pay For

The shop’s first instinct was to email us a photo of an empty bay and ask what would fit. We get that email a dozen times a month, and the honest answer is always the same: photos hide the two things that matter most, which are slab thickness and what is buried in the floor. So we drove over. The survey took about ninety minutes and it caught three problems. First, the bay they picked had a floor drain running diagonally through the exact area where the driver-side column footing needed to land. Second, the ceiling in that bay dropped to just under eleven feet where a truss brace crossed, which would have limited them on anything taller than a mid-size SUV. Third, the slab was four inches in the front half of the building and a genuine six inches in the back, poured in two different decades.

Moving the install to the back bay solved all three issues at once. That is the whole value of a survey — it is cheaper to move a drawing than to move a set of anchors. We also core-tested the slab in two spots so we were not guessing about the concrete under the surface. A shop that skips this step usually finds out the hard way, and we have taken plenty of calls from owners in other states who set their own equipment, then discovered it would not sit level. Those calls almost always start with someone Googling lift repair and finding us. We would rather meet you before that phone call than after.

Concrete, Anchors, and Why We Said Wait

The back bay’s slab passed the thickness test, but the survey showed it had a control joint running eighteen inches from one column location. Anchoring near a joint is a bad idea because the concrete there wants to move, and anchor pullout is not a theoretical risk when you are holding 7,000 pounds in the air. We recommended cutting out a section and pouring a proper reinforced pad rather than fudging the layout. That pushed the install back three weeks while the new concrete cured, and the owner was not thrilled. He is thrilled now.

Here is the part people underestimate: fresh concrete needs real cure time before you shoot anchors into it, and “it feels hard” is not the same as cured. We ask for a minimum of 28 days on a new pour, and we do not negotiate on it. In this case the shop used the delay productively, running a dedicated 220V circuit to the bay and moving their parts washer so the swing arms would clear. When we finally set the car lift, the actual mechanical work took most of a day, including anchor torque checks, shimming both columns plumb, and cycling the equipment through a dozen full travels while empty. The anchors torqued to spec on the first pull, which is what a good pour buys you. Every dollar they spent on concrete came back the first week in bays they did not have to shut down.

Choosing the Configuration for RV Shop Reality

An RV and trailer shop has a different problem than a general repair shop. Their existing bays are wide, tall, and set up for long wheelbases, but the vehicles they wanted to service on the new hoist were ordinary cars and light trucks coming in for transmission service and general maintenance. They initially asked about a four-post because “drive-on is easier.” We talked them out of it, and here is the reasoning we gave them.

Four-post equipment is excellent for storage and for alignment work, but the runways are in the way for the exact job they wanted to do. Dropping a transmission means you need clear access to the crossmember, the bellhousing, and the mounts, and a two-post gives you an open floor under the vehicle for a transmission jack. We recommended a clearfloor asymmetric two-post in the 10,000 lb class, which handled everything from a Camry to a three-quarter-ton pickup with room to spare over their stated 7,000 lb target. The asymmetric arm design also let them get door clearance on cars without the vehicle sitting so far back that the balance point suffered. One more thing we pushed for: a set of drop-in truck adapters and stackable pads, ordered with the machine instead of six months later. Buying pads up front is the cheapest upgrade in this business, and a car lift without the right adapters is a car lift that spends part of its life idle.

Install Day and the First Week

Install day on a two-post is not glamorous. We showed up with the columns, carriages, arms, power unit, and hardware, laid out chalk lines off the reference wall, and set anchors. Overhead versions need the crossbar and cable routing squared away, and cable tension is where a lot of DIY installs go sideways — if the equalizer cables are not matched, the carriages will not run level, and you will chase that problem forever. We set tension by measurement, not by feel, then re-checked it after the first twenty cycles because cables seat and stretch slightly under initial load.

We also spent a solid forty minutes on training before we left, which we do on every job. The techs learned where the lock releases are, what a properly engaged lock sounds like, how to spot the arm restraints seating, and what the daily walkaround should cover. That last one matters: hoses, fittings, cable condition, and lock function take two minutes to check and prevent the single most common emergency call we get. Twice in the past year we have driven several hours for someone whose 4-post had a leaking cylinder with a vehicle stuck in the air, and the customer could not tell us the brand or model of their equipment. Neither situation would have been an emergency if somebody had noticed a weeping fitting a month earlier. The Davenport shop’s first week was quiet, which is exactly the review you want.

The First Real Transmission Service

Six weeks in, a customer brought them a high-mileage front-wheel-drive sedan with a slipping transmission. This was the job the shop bought the hoist for, and it went about as well as it could. Two techs pulled the unit in a little under four hours, which is roughly half the time the same job used to take them on jack stands, and nobody spent the afternoon on their back on cold concrete in February.

What the foreman noticed was not the speed but the fatigue difference. His crew came out of that job able to do another one. That is the argument we make to shop owners who are on the fence about a car lift purchase — the labor recovery is real, but the retention benefit is bigger and harder to quantify. Good techs in eastern Iowa have options, and the shops that make the work physically sustainable keep people longer. They also found a secondary benefit they had not planned for: the open floor under a raised vehicle turned out to be a great place to inspect trailer axles and brake assemblies at eye level, since they could set a trailer axle on a stand next to the hoist and work standing up. Not what the machine was sold for, but they will take it. By month three the equipment had become the bay everybody fought over, which is the highest compliment shop equipment gets.

What Broke, What Didn’t, and What We Serviced

In twelve months, nothing structural failed. What did happen was a slow drip at a hose fitting around month eight, which is unremarkable and normal on a new hydraulic system as fittings settle. We tightened it on a scheduled visit and topped off the reservoir. The other item was a lock that started sounding lazy on one side, which turned out to be a slightly dry lock linkage collecting brake dust. Ten minutes of cleaning and lubrication fixed it.

We put the shop on an annual inspection schedule from day one. That inspection covers anchor torque, cable condition and tension, lock engagement on both columns, arm restraint function, hydraulic hose and fitting condition, cylinder seal integrity, and a full loaded-cycle test. It also gets documented, which matters if you ever have an insurance conversation. Owners sometimes ask why they should pay for an inspection when the equipment is working fine. Our answer is that hydraulic and cable systems fail predictably and visibly if somebody is looking. Cables fray at the sheave first. Cylinders seep before they blow. Anchors loosen gradually. A car lift that gets looked at once a year almost never becomes an emergency, and a car lift that gets ignored for a decade eventually becomes a very expensive Tuesday. We also stock the wear parts for every major brand, so a bad cable or seal kit is a same-week fix, not a six-week backorder.

What We’d Tell the Next Davenport Shop

If you are a specialty shop adding your first passenger-vehicle bay, the pattern from this install holds up. Get the survey done before you pick the bay, not after. Assume your slab is thinner than the original plans say, because in Iowa buildings from the seventies and eighties it usually is. Budget for concrete work as a line item rather than a surprise. Order your adapters and pads at the same time as the machine. And pick a configuration based on the jobs you will actually bill, not the jobs that sound impressive.

Beyond that, buy from someone who will still answer the phone in year seven. That sounds self-serving coming from us, but the failure mode we see constantly is equipment bought online from a seller who has no service arm and no parts inventory. When the cylinder seeps or a cable gives up, the owner is on their own with a machine whose data plate has been painted over. We are not a warehouse that ships boxes and disappears.
