Most shops buy equipment like it’s disposable and then act surprised when a trade-in offer comes back at scrap weight. The reality is that a well-known commercial two-post with documented service history and a legible ALI label routinely brings back a meaningful slice of what was paid for it — often 30 to 45 percent after a decade of daily use. An off-brand import from a company that folded three years ago brings back almost nothing, because no buyer wants to inherit a machine they can’t get a cylinder or a cable for. That gap is not small. Wheels-free access is the whole job — you need the hubs hanging in open air, calipers reachable from both sides, and nothing under the rocker panel getting in the way of your creeper or your rolling jack. A four-post keeps the tires loaded on runways, which means you’re adding rolling bridge jacks just to get the wheels off, and now you’ve spent extra money to make a storage lift behave like a service lift. Four-posts earn their keep for alignment, undercar inspection, and long-term vehicle storage. They do not earn it on a brake line.
Where it gets interesting for a body shop specifically is asymmetric versus symmetric column configuration. Symmetric arms put the vehicle centered between the columns, which is fine for trucks but pins car doors against the posts — bad news when you’re pulling interior panels or getting in and out of a unibody all day. Asymmetric rotates the columns and shifts the vehicle rearward so doors swing clear. Most modern clearfloor models from Rotary and Challenger handle both patterns. Capacity, Ceiling Height, and the Slab Underneath
Capacity is where buyers overspend and underthink at the same time. A shop doing passenger cars, crossovers, and the occasional half-ton does not need 18,000 lb columns — a 10,000 or 12,000 lb unit covers the work with margin. But capacity ratings assume balanced loading and adequate adapter height, and a dually pickup with a service body can surprise you fast. A clearfloor two-post needs roughly 12 feet of clear height for the overhead beam, and if you’re at 10 or 11 feet, you’re looking at a baseplate model instead — which routes hydraulic lines and equalizer cables through a floor plate you’ll drive over. As for the slab, we want to see at least 4 to 4.25 inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI minimum, more for heavier setups, with no expansion joints or trenches under the anchor pattern. We’ve cut test cores in southeast Iowa shops and found 3 inches of skim over gravel. Fixing that before install is cheaper than fixing it after.
What Kills Resale Value Faster Than Age
Age matters less than paperwork and parts. The fastest way to destroy the value of otherwise good equipment is to lose the documentation — no serial number, no annual inspection records, no manual, no ALI certification label. A commercial buyer, especially a dealership or a franchised collision center, often can’t accept uncertified equipment because their insurance carrier or their OEM program won’t allow it. That instantly cuts your buyer pool to hobbyists paying hobbyist money.
Right behind paperwork comes deferred maintenance that leaves permanent marks. Equalizer cables run dry until they fray and score the sheaves. Locks that stopped latching and got zip-tied out of the way. Carriage slide blocks worn to metal-on-metal so the columns are galled. A leaking cylinder is a repairable event — we replace those routinely and the machine goes right back to work. Galled columns and cracked welds are not. We also see anchor bolts that were torqued once in 2009 and never checked; if the base has been rocking for years, the concrete around it is spider-cracked and the whole footprint may need repair. Annual inspection with a cable and lock service on any car lift costs a fraction of what one of these failures takes off the sale price, and it keeps your people safer in the meantime.
New, Used, or Refurbished: Running the Numbers
New commercial two-posts in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class land in a fairly predictable mid-four-figure range before freight and installation, with heavier and specialty configurations climbing from there. Refurbished units from a shop that actually rebuilt the cylinder, replaced cables, and re-certified sit in between and can be a genuinely good buy.
Financing changes the math more than most buyers expect. Compare that against buying a cheap used machine outright and then spending two grand on a cylinder, a cable set, and a lock kit in the first year. When you factor in the resale floor on a recognized brand, the new-with-financing path frequently wins on total cost of ownership even though the sticker looks worse.
