A farm shop owner northwest of Sioux City called us last spring because he was tired of doing brake jobs on his back. Between two grain trucks, a pair of pickups, his wife’s crossover, and whatever the neighbors dragged over, he figured he was pulling rotors a dozen times a year on jack stands. He wanted a car lift, but he wanted the right one, and he wanted it to still be serviceable in fifteen years. That second part is the one most buyers skip. We walked him through the same pre-purchase checklist we use with every customer in western Iowa, and it starts long before you pick a color or a capacity. It starts with brand history and whether anyone can still get you parts.

Start With the Work You Actually Do, Not the Heaviest Thing You Own

The first line on our checklist is honest use. Brake service and rotor swaps mean wheels-free access, and that pushes almost every buyer toward a two-post design. You need the tires off the ground, the caliper and hub at chest height, and nothing between you and the rotor face. A drive-on four-post will hold a vehicle beautifully for storage or exhaust work, but if brakes are your bread and butter, you’ll be fighting rolling jacks every single job. That’s why we steer brake-heavy shops and serious home mechanics toward two posts unless there’s a specific reason not to.

The second half of that same question is capacity, and this is where people talk themselves into trouble. The farm shop owner near Sioux City started out asking about a 15,000 lb unit because he owns a tandem-axle truck. But he was never going to put that truck on a lift with an eight-foot column spread. His real fleet was pickups and passenger vehicles, all under 7,000 lb. A 10,000 lb two-post handles that with margin to spare and costs thousands less than the heavy iron. Buy for the ninety-five percent of vehicles you actually service, and rent or farm out the outliers. Oversizing a car lift doesn’t make you safer, it just makes your columns taller, your slab requirements stricter, and your checkbook lighter.

Brand History Matters More Than the Spec Sheet

Every lift on the market looks fine in a photo. The difference shows up eight years later when a cylinder starts weeping or a cable stretches past its adjustment range. That’s when brand history becomes the most important spec on the sheet, and it’s not something you can see in a listing.

Rotary has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s, and they invented the hydraulic automotive lift as a product category. What that means practically is that a Rotary SPOA10 built in 2004 still has a documented parts tree, a serial number that traces to a build record, and carriage components that haven’t changed dimensionally in decades. Challenger Lifts out of Louisville has a similar track record on the commercial side, and their parts availability has stayed strong through multiple ownership changes. BendPak and Atlas serve the home and light-duty market well, and we stock and install both. Where we get cautious is the flood of unbranded imports sold on marketplace sites. We take calls constantly from people who bought one of those and now can’t identify the manufacturer at all. One caller in Florida had a vehicle stuck in the air on a leaking cylinder and couldn’t tell us anything beyond “four post, 7,000 pound, black.” There’s no parts pipeline for that. Brand history is your insurance policy on a purchase you’ll own for two decades.

The Parts Pipeline Question Nobody Asks Before Buying a Car Lift

Here is the question we wish every buyer would ask a dealer before signing: if this thing needs a cylinder, a cable set, a lock ladder, or a power unit in year nine, who ships it and how fast? We ask ourselves that on your behalf before we ever recommend a model.

We keep cylinders, cable assemblies, lock components, hydraulic hoses, safety latches, and power units on the shelf in Ames for the major brands, and we ship them nationwide. That inventory exists because we service what we sell, and we got tired of telling customers to wait three weeks. A brake shop that can’t raise a vehicle isn’t a brake shop, it’s a parking lot. The economics of downtime dwarf the price difference between a well-supported lift and a bargain one. Think about it in terms of bays: one bay down for two weeks at even modest labor throughput will erase whatever you saved on the purchase. Meanwhile the well-supported unit gets a cylinder overnighted and you’re back turning rotors the next morning. When you’re comparing two quotes that look close on paper, ask each seller to name the part number for the primary cylinder on the model they’re pushing. If they can’t, that tells you everything about the pipeline behind it.

Slab, Ceiling, and Power: Measure Before You Order

The Sioux City shop was a 40×60 pole building with a floor poured about six years earlier. That’s a common setup out here, and it’s usually fine, but usually isn’t a specification. Most two-post lifts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many of the taller and higher-capacity models want more. If the slab was poured over poorly compacted fill, or if there’s a control joint running right where an anchor needs to land, you’ve got a problem that no amount of hardware fixes. We ask for slab age, thickness, and whether there’s rebar or mesh before we quote an install.

Ceiling height is the other measurement people get wrong. A ten-foot two-post with a two-foot overhead assembly needs more than twelve feet of clear height once you account for lighting, purlins, and the tallest vehicle you plan to raise. In pole buildings the trusses often eat the height you thought you had. Baseplate models solve that by routing the equalizer cables through the floor plate instead of overhead, and we install a lot of them in Iowa farm shops for exactly this reason. Power is the last item: most single-phase 220V units want a dedicated 30-amp circuit within reach of the column. Get an electrician’s opinion before delivery day, not the morning of.

Asymmetric, Symmetric, or Baseplate for Brake Work

Once capacity is settled, the arm and column geometry decides how pleasant your brake jobs will be. Symmetric two-posts place the columns directly across from each other and center the vehicle between them, which works well for trucks and vans but means car doors open into the columns. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and shift the vehicle rearward so the doors clear, which matters a lot if you’re getting in and out of a sedan repeatedly during a brake bleed.

For a mixed farm-and-family fleet, we usually recommend an asymmetric or a versymmetric design that handles both. The three-stage front arms reach short wheelbases, the rear arms extend for longer trucks, and you still get door clearance on passenger cars. Lock spacing is worth checking too. Cheaper units space their locks a foot apart, which means when you want the rotor at a specific working height you’re stuck taking whatever lock is nearest. Better units space locks every three or four inches so you can set height precisely and let the mechanical locks carry the load instead of the hydraulics. That’s not a comfort feature, it’s a safety one: hydraulics should raise and lower, locks should hold. Any car lift you buy for brake service should let you park it exactly where your shoulders want it and then click into steel.

Installation, Anchors, and the Certification Question

We do a fair number of jobs where the customer already bought a lift somewhere else and installed it himself, then called us because something isn’t right. A lead came in from Indiana last year with a note that read almost exactly that: installed it himself, it doesn’t lift level. That’s typically cable equalization, sometimes a bent carriage from a first-lift mistake, occasionally an anchor that never set properly in the slab. All of it is fixable, but it costs more to fix than it would have cost to do right the first time.

Professional installation on a car lift covers the things that are easy to get wrong and expensive to discover later: anchor torque to manufacturer spec with the right embedment depth, column plumb within tolerance, cable and chain equalization so both carriages track together, hydraulic bleed so the cylinders don’t lurch, and a full function test through the entire travel with load. We also handle ALI certification inspections and annual safety inspections, which matter if you’re a commercial shop carrying insurance or if your work gets audited. For a home or farm shop there’s no legal requirement, but there’s a practical one: the day someone gets hurt under a lift, the first question anyone asks is who installed it and when it was last inspected. Having a real answer to that is worth the install fee.

He ended up with a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post, a baseplate configuration to clear his trusses, and a set of truck adapters for the taller pickups. Total install took most of a day including anchoring and a load test. He’s done more brake jobs in the year since than in the three years before, mostly because the barrier to starting one dropped to almost nothing. That’s the real return on a lift: not the hourly savings on any single job but the fact that you stop putting work off.
