Line One: The Equipment Itself
A 14,000 lb drive-on unit built for daily commercial duty sits in a very different price tier than a 9,000 lb home-storage model, and the gap is not marketing. You’re paying for heavier runway plate, larger sheaves, thicker cable, a bigger power unit, and a lock system engineered for thousands of cycles a year instead of a few hundred. In broad ranges, expect a well-built commercial drive-on setup at that capacity to land in the upper four figures to low five figures before options.
Rolling jacks are the option that surprises people. A matched pair with the correct adapter kit for the runway width can add 20 to 30 percent to the base price, and they are absolutely worth it for a shop doing CV axle and half-shaft work. Pulling a half-shaft means getting the suspension unloaded, and doing that on a drive-on platform without jacks means fighting the vehicle the entire time. We’ve watched techs waste twenty minutes per job cribbing a floor jack on a runway. Over a year that’s days of labor. Line Two: Freight, Rigging, and Getting It Inside

We cored it. Two small test holes, patched the same day, gave us actual thickness and let us see aggregate condition. It came back adequate in one half of the bay and thin near an old expansion joint, so we shifted the footprint 6 feet and avoided a footing pour entirely. Line Four: Electrical, Air, and Commissioning
Power units on commercial drive-on lifts commonly run 208-230V single phase or three phase depending on configuration, and the run from your panel to the post is a licensed electrician’s line item, not ours. We coordinate, we specify the circuit, and we tell the electrician exactly where to land the disconnect. A 60-foot conduit run with a new breaker and disconnect is a modest cost. A run that crosses a bay and needs trenching is not.
Air matters too. Most lock-release systems on drive-on units are pneumatic, and rolling jacks are frequently air-over-hydraulic. If your compressor is on the far side of the building and already struggling to keep up with impact guns, add a drop and factor the cost. Commissioning is the last piece and the one that gets skipped by low bidders. Our process: level and shim all four posts, torque anchors to spec, cycle the lift unloaded a dozen times, verify all locks engage simultaneously by ear and by feel, load-test with a real vehicle, bleed the hydraulics fully, set the slack-cable safety, and train the crew on emergency lowering. That’s most of a day. A car lift that gets commissioned properly on install day generates fewer service calls in its first five years than one that got dropped off and bolted down.
What a Used Car Lift Actually Trades For

Three habits determine what your equipment is worth when you sell the building. First, keep the paperwork. Manual, invoice, serial number, and every service record in one folder, plus a photo of the data plate saved somewhere that survives a computer replacement. We leave a laminated spec card on the power unit at every install for exactly this reason.
Second, do the annual inspection and keep the report. An ALI-style annual inspection with a written record is the closest thing this industry has to a Carfax, and a buyer who sees eight consecutive reports will pay a premium without arguing. Third, replace wear parts before they fail rather than after. Cables, lock dogs, and cylinder seals are consumables on a commercial machine. A cable set replaced on schedule costs a fraction of what a snapped cable costs in damage, downtime, and the story that follows your shop around.
