Start With Budget, Not the Catalog

Every decision tree starts with a real number, and every good crew chief knows a budget conversation up front saves you from falling in love with equipment you can’t afford to install correctly. When we work through a car lift for house options, we ask what’s actually allocated for the lift plus install, not just the lift. A bare 2-post asymmetric unit can look affordable until you add anchoring, electrical, and freight, and a customer who quoted themselves $5k off a website often lands closer to double that once delivery and a proper install crew are in the picture.

For home bays doing CV axle, half-shaft, and other driveline work, we generally steer people toward a 9,000 to 10,000 lb 2-post lift rather than the cheapest 7,000 lb unit, because axle work means pulling wheels and sometimes dropping a subframe, and you want margin in the arms and the rated capacity. If the budget is tight, we’ll spec a solid mechanical 2-post before we’ll spec a cheap import scissor — a car lift for house use has to survive years of real work, not just look good in the garage.

Ceiling Height Decides Your Configuration

Once budget is set, ceiling height becomes the next branch in the tree, and it’s non-negotiable. A 2-post lift needs roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling to run a vehicle up high enough for comfortable axle and half-shaft access without you crouched under the car. Drop below that and you’re forced into a lower-profile lift or a mid-rise, which changes your working height and your options.

We measure to the lowest point — a garage door track, a light fixture, a duct run — because that’s the number that matters, not the peak of a vaulted ceiling. Knowing this before you order saves a restock fee and a wasted install day. Floor Thickness and Reinforcement for Real Work

The next branch is the slab. Most home garages run 4 inches of standard concrete, which is fine for a lighter mid-rise but marginal for a heavier 2-post doing regular CV axle and suspension work where you’re loading and unloading, torquing hub nuts, and putting real side load on the columns. We recommend a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete with rebar for a 9,000-10,000 lb 2-post, and we’ll always core sample or at least visually inspect before we anchor.

If you’re pouring new for a shop or garage addition, tell your concrete crew up front that a car lift for house use is going in — that changes the mix, the cure time, and sometimes the rebar schedule. We’ve seen driveways poured without any of this in mind, and retrofitting anchors into thin, unreinforced slab is a compromise, not a fix. Get this step right and the lift will outlast the car you bought it for.

Configuration: 2-Post vs Mid-Rise for Driveline Work

With budget, ceiling, and floor settled, configuration is the payoff decision. For CV axle and half-shaft replacement specifically, a 2-post lift wins on access — both front and rear axles are fully exposed with wheels hanging free, which matters when you’re driving a half-shaft back into a hub or torquing a new CV boot clamp. A mid-rise or scissor lift can work in a pinch but often leaves you working around the frame rails in ways a 2-post doesn’t.

We still ask about secondary use, though. If the same bay also needs to store a second car overnight, a 4-post with a rolling bridge jack can do both jobs, just with less ideal axle access than a straight 2-post. Most serious home mechanics doing regular driveline work choose the 2-post and accept that storage is a secondary function, not the primary one. That’s the honest trade-off, and it’s the same one we’d make in our own shop.

Electrical and Air Requirements Nobody Mentions

A decision tree isn’t finished until you’ve planned the utilities, and this is where a lot of DIY installs stall out. Most residential 2-post lifts run on a dedicated 220V circuit, and if your garage panel doesn’t already have capacity, that’s an electrician call before install day, not during it. We ask about this on every quote because showing up with a lift and no power is a wasted trip for everyone.

Air is the other piece. You don’t strictly need a compressor to run the lift itself, but CV axle and half-shaft work goes a lot faster with an impact gun, and most home garages doing this kind of work end up adding a compressor within the first year anyway. Plan the outlet and the air line location before the lift arrives so you’re not running extension cords and hoses across a bay that should be clean and organized. Good crew chiefs plan the pit before the car shows up, and this is no different.

Anchoring, Access, and the Install Day Itself

On install day, the crew needs clear access — a garage door width sufficient to bring in columns and cross beams, and enough headroom to stand the posts upright before anchoring. We’ve had installs in West Des Moines delayed because a customer didn’t realize the columns needed to come through the garage door at an angle, not straight in. This is exactly the kind of prep item that belongs earlier in the decision tree, not discovered the morning of.

Anchoring itself is where the floor prep pays off. We drill, set anchors to spec, and torque to the values the manufacturer requires — skipping this step or under-torquing is the single most common failure point we see on lifts that weren’t installed by a professional crew.
