Confirm Your Electrical Service Before Anything Else
Every hydraulic lift needs a power unit to raise the vehicle, and most residential-capable units run on either 110V or 220V depending on the model. Before you buy anything, check what’s actually available in your garage. A lot of older northwest Iowa garages were wired decades ago for basic lighting and an outlet or two — not for a 220V circuit dedicated to lift equipment.
If you’re not sure, look at your electrical panel and count open breaker slots, then call an electrician to confirm whether running a new 220V line to the lift location is straightforward or a bigger job involving panel upgrades. This is the single most common surprise we see with hobbyist installs: the lift shows up, the power unit is 220V, and the garage only has 110V available. Confirming this before purchase saves you weeks of delay and an unplanned electrician bill on top of the lift itself.
Measure Your Ceiling Height With the Vehicle in Mind
A two-post or four-post lift needs enough overhead clearance to raise your vehicle to a useful working height, and for seasonal storage specifically, you often want to raise the vehicle high enough to park something else underneath it. Measure your actual ceiling height at the lift location, not just a guess, and account for garage door tracks, light fixtures, and any ductwork that might be in the way.
We ask every hobbyist customer for their ceiling height and their tallest vehicle’s height before quoting a lift, because it directly determines which model works in the space. A lift with a tall power unit column or overhead configuration might clear a nine-foot ceiling fine at a dealership but won’t work in a garage with an eight-foot ceiling and a foot of clearance eaten up by a garage door opener rail.
Check Your Floor Slab Thickness and Condition
The car lift hydraulic power unit itself doesn’t care about your floor, but the lift’s anchor points absolutely do. Most two-post and four-post lifts require a minimum concrete slab thickness — commonly four inches, sometimes more depending on the lift’s capacity — and the concrete needs to be properly cured, not cracked, and free of major control joints running through the anchor bolt pattern.
Before you buy, go out to the garage with a tape measure and, if you can, a rebar locator or at minimum knowledge of when the slab was poured. Older Iowa garages sometimes have thinner slabs than modern code requires, especially in additions built decades ago. If your slab doesn’t meet the minimum thickness, you’re looking at either a different lift style — a mobile column or portable lift may sidestep the issue — or a concrete project before installation, and you want to know that before you’ve already paid for a lift that won’t legally anchor in your space.
Decide Where the Power Unit Will Actually Mount
Most two-post lifts mount the power unit on one of the columns, while some four-post and mid-rise configurations locate it separately with hydraulic lines running to the lift mechanism. Before purchase, think through where the unit will sit relative to your workflow — you don’t want it blocking a walkway, positioned where a car door will hit it, or crammed into a corner where you can’t service it later.

It’s a fifteen-minute exercise that prevents a permanent headache once four hundred pounds of steel and hydraulics are bolted to your floor. Ask About Noise and Duty Cycle for Occasional Use
Since you’re using this lift primarily for seasonal storage rather than daily service work, duty cycle matters less than it would in a commercial shop — but noise still matters if your garage is attached to living space. Power units vary in how loud they run during raise cycles, and a unit that’s perfectly fine in a detached shop building might be more noticeable if it’s twenty feet from a bedroom wall.

For occasional seasonal use — raising a vehicle in fall and lowering it in spring — you also don’t need to over-invest in a heavy-duty commercial-grade power unit built for hundreds of cycles a day. A home-rated unit sized correctly for your vehicle’s weight is usually the more cost-effective and appropriately-sized choice.
Get the Weight Rating Right for What You’re Actually Storing
It’s tempting to buy the biggest lift you can afford, but the car lift hydraulic power unit and lift structure both need to be sized to your actual vehicle, not an imagined future one. Weigh your heaviest stored vehicle, including any accessories like a snowplow mount or bed topper, and add a safety margin rather than cutting it close to the lift’s rated capacity.
Undersizing creates real risk — an underpowered pump straining against a vehicle near or over its rated limit wears out faster and is a safety issue, not just a convenience one. Oversizing costs more upfront but rarely causes problems. If you’re storing a full-size pickup or an SUV with aftermarket weight added, size the lift and its power unit for that reality, not for the sedan you might buy someday.
Confirm Installation Support Before You Commit to a Purchase
The single biggest mistake we see hobbyists make is buying a lift online from a source with no local installation support, discovering the site survey issues above only after the lift arrives on a pallet in their driveway. Before you buy, confirm who will actually install it, whether that installer has serviced your specific brand before, and what happens if the site survey turns up a problem after purchase.
