Picking between an overhead and a baseplate car lift is the single decision we argue about most with shop owners, and an EV specialty shop up in Sioux City gave us a textbook example last spring. They were converting an old two-bay building into a battery and drive-unit service center, ceilings measured a hair under eleven feet, and they had already been told by a salesman that overhead was impossible for them. That turned out to be wrong on two counts. We install and service both configurations across Iowa every week, and the myths people carry into that conversation cost them either money, headroom, or years of clean floor. Myth 1: Low Ceilings Automatically Rule Out Overhead

This is the one that nearly cost the Sioux City shop the configuration they actually wanted. Overhead two-post models are not one height. The overhead beam assembly on most 10,000 lb units sits somewhere in the 11 to 12 foot range at full extension, but manufacturers publish low-ceiling versions with shortened columns and relocated crossbeams, and several models let you drop the beam height by reconfiguring the equalizer routing. On an eleven-foot ceiling you may lose some of the top of the travel range, but you rarely lose the whole option.

What actually rules out overhead is not the ceiling number by itself. It is the combination of ceiling height, the height of the tallest vehicle you plan to service, and whether you need to raise that vehicle high enough to stand under it. A shop working sedans and crossovers on an eleven-foot ceiling has plenty of usable travel with an overhead unit. A shop that regularly puts high-roof vans in the air does not, and no amount of clever routing fixes that. We measure three things on site before we quote: finished floor to the lowest obstruction, the depth of any light fixtures or duct runs in the bay footprint, and the door opening height, because plenty of buildings have a ceiling that clears fine and a door header that does not. Get those three numbers and the overhead question answers itself in about a minute.

Myth 2: Baseplate Lifts Are the Cheap Compromise

Baseplate two-post units get treated like the budget option, and that reputation is mostly historical. The floor plate that carries the hydraulic line and equalizer cables between the columns does two useful things: it keeps everything at ground level where you can see it and service it, and it lets the columns work in a building where nothing structural can go overhead. In a leased space with a landlord who does not want anything anchored or hung above the bay, a baseplate is not a compromise at all. It is the only version that gets approved.

The real trade-off is the plate itself. It is a low ramp you drive over every day, and it sits exactly where you want to roll a transmission jack. For the transmission and drive-unit work the Sioux City shop does, that mattered. A drive unit on a low-profile jack coming out from under an EV crossover has to travel across the bay, and every threshold in that path is a place where the load can shift. They ended up choosing overhead for the transmission bay and putting a baseplate model in the second bay where they do inspections and brake work. That split is a lot more common than people expect, and it is usually the right answer when a shop has two very different jobs happening in the same building. Do not let anyone tell you a baseplate car lift is a downgrade — it is a different tool.

Myth 3: A Car Lift Is a Car Lift, Anchors Are Anchors

The anchoring conversation is where we see the most expensive mistakes, and it does not care which configuration you picked. Both overhead and baseplate two-post units transfer enormous overturning moment into the slab through a handful of wedge anchors per column. If the concrete under those anchors is thin, cracked, poorly cured, or sitting on soft fill, the configuration is irrelevant — the installation is unsafe either way.

Most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of properly reinforced concrete at 3,000 psi or better for a 10,000 lb unit, with more depth required as capacity goes up. Older Iowa shop buildings are all over the map. We have cored slabs in Sioux City, Ames, and Council Bluffs and found everything from a solid six inches to three and a half inches over gravel with a control joint running right through the column footprint. A control joint or an expansion joint inside the anchor pattern is a hard no; you either relocate the columns or cut and pour a proper pad. Coring costs a fraction of what a failed installation costs, and it takes an afternoon. We would rather core your floor and tell you the bad news up front than come back later to figure out why one column is walking. The anchors are also not reusable in the same holes after a relocation, which surprises people who move a lift within their own building.

Myth 4: Overhead Beams Always Get in the Way

Shops that have never run an overhead unit imagine constantly banging into the crossbeam. In practice the beam sits above the vehicle roofline through most of the travel range, and the shutoff bar on the beam is what stops you before a roof or an antenna hits it. That shutoff is a feature, not a nuisance. It protects the vehicle you are working on and it protects your ceiling.

Where the beam genuinely does get in the way is with anything tall and boxy. High-roof cargo vans, ambulances, service trucks with racks, anything with a roof-mounted unit — those hit the shutoff long before you get useful lift height, and that is when a clear-floor overhead model stops making sense and a four-post or a mobile column setup becomes the right conversation. The other real complaint is lighting. If you mount an overhead unit under a fluorescent or LED strip that runs perpendicular to the bay, the beam will shadow exactly the area you need to see. We plan lighting around lift placement, not the other way around, and it costs almost nothing to move a fixture during a build-out compared to living with a dark bay for a decade. When we walk a new shop we tape out the column locations and the beam path on the floor before anybody drills anything, then look up.

Myth 5: Configuration Choice Doesn’t Affect Transmission Work

It absolutely does, and the effect is bigger on the EV side than on legacy powertrains. Pulling a conventional transmission means dropping a heavy assembly straight down onto a jack in a fairly tight vertical window. Pulling an EV drive unit or dropping a battery pack means handling something wide, awkward, and often heavier, and it means having room to roll a table or a pack lift completely out from under the vehicle without hopping a threshold.

On a clear-floor overhead unit, that space is genuinely clear from column to column. On a baseplate unit, the floor plate crosses the middle of that path. Some shops solve it by ramping the plate with a fabricated wedge, which works fine for a rolling jack but adds a step you have to think about with a 500 lb pack on wheels. Column spacing matters just as much. Asymmetric arm configurations let you park the vehicle further back so the doors open in the column plane, which is great for interior access but changes where the pinch weld pads sit relative to your working area. For the transmission bay specifically, we usually push shops toward a symmetric or wide-spacing overhead model with a genuinely clear floor. The extra cost is small compared to the labor time you lose maneuvering around obstructions on every single job for the next fifteen years. What We Actually Ask Before Quoting a Car Lift

Our site survey for a two-post car lift is short and it has not changed much in years, because the same handful of numbers decide everything. Finished floor to the lowest obstruction. Slab thickness and reinforcement, cored if we have any doubt. Bay width from wall to wall and from column to any adjacent equipment. The heaviest and tallest vehicles you actually service, not the ones you hope to. Power available at the bay — single phase or three phase, and what breaker. Door header height. Where the air and electrical drops already are.

From those answers the configuration usually picks itself. Tall ceiling, solid slab, mixed vehicle mix, transmission work — overhead clear-floor. Low ceiling, tall vehicles, or a landlord who will not allow overhead structure — baseplate. Very tall vehicles or a need to store one car over another — a different family of equipment entirely. What we will not do is quote a car lift off a phone description and let you find out about a control joint after the truck shows up. The Sioux City shop got two bays, two configurations, and a lighting plan that worked around both, and they have not called us about a layout regret since.
