The shop does a lot of brake and rotor work on lifted trucks and overland rigs, which means long hours with vehicles sitting up top while techs work underneath. During a rotor swap, one of the guys noticed the frame contact points weren’t level side to side. The other issue is that most shops never actually look closely at the cables because they’re routed inside the columns, out of sight during normal use. You have to pull covers or crawl underneath to see the runs where they curve around the sheaves at the base. What We Recommend for Inspection Intervals

That visual check takes five minutes: look for fraying, kinks, flat spots, rust bloom, or any place where the cable diameter looks uneven. If a lift only gets used a few times a week, you can stretch that to every six months, but we still push for the annual full inspection no matter how light the usage is, because cables age from sitting as well as from cycling.
During the annual inspection, we also check the sheaves the cables run over, the equalizer bar, and the anchor points where the cable is swaged into its fitting. A worn sheave will chew up a brand-new cable just as fast as it wore out the old one, so replacing the cable alone without addressing a grooved or flat-spotted sheave is a short-term fix. We always replace cables in matched pairs or full sets rather than one at a time, because a lift with one new cable and three old ones just puts more stress on the older ones that are already closer to their limit.

On a lift running daily brake and alignment work, hose fittings see a lot of pressure cycles, and rubber ages even without visible damage. We recommend treating hoses on the same rough interval as cables — visual check every service call, full replacement consideration once the lift is a decade or more old, sooner in an unheated Iowa shop where temperature swings are harder on rubber and seals.
Getting the Right Parts When You Don’t Have a Model Number
The Iowa City shop’s lift turned out to be an older two-post unit with no legible tag left on it, similar to several unbranded or relabeled lifts we’ve traced back to older Wheeltronic-style designs over the years.
