Why Slab Thickness Comes Before Any Parts Order

A shop that’s been welding quarter panels and rebuilding frames for three generations knows metal, but concrete is a different animal. Most two-post lift manufacturers call for a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete, and that number climbs to 4.5 or 5 inches for heavier-duty columns rated above 10,000 pounds, which is common in restoration work where you’re lifting a body-off project with a subframe still attached. Anchor bolts need full embedment depth, and if the existing slab is thinner than spec or has been patched over an old floor drain, no amount of new cables or a fresh power unit is going to keep that lift stable under a loaded chassis.

We’ve walked into Iowa Great Lakes area shops where the previous owner poured a slab decades ago for a lighter service bay, then someone installed a heavier lift on it later without checking the rating. Before we quote car lift parts for anything structural — columns, baseplates, anchor kits — we ask for slab age, thickness, and whether there’s any visible rebar mesh near the surface. That single conversation prevents a lift from becoming a hazard six months after the parts arrive.

Rebar Placement and What It Means for Anchoring

Rebar itself isn’t always a benefit when you’re drilling anchors — it depends on placement. Standard 6×6 welded wire mesh sitting a couple inches below the surface is common in older Iowa shop floors, and it’s usually fine for anchor drilling as long as the bit doesn’t hit a bar directly, which just means shifting the anchor point an inch or two. Heavier rebar grids, though, sized for structural loads rather than crack control, can actually interfere with drilling depth and anchor engagement if the installer isn’t paying attention.

For a restoration shop doing engine pulls and frame swaps, we recommend a slab inspection before finalizing any car lift parts order that includes new baseplates or anchor bolts. We’ve seen family-owned shops try to save money by reusing anchor holes from a previous lift, and it almost never lines up cleanly with new equipment. Fresh anchors, correctly embedded past any surface rebar, are cheap insurance compared to a lift shifting under a loaded frame.

Sourcing Parts for Lifts With No Identification Tag

One of the most common calls we get is from a shop with an older lift — sometimes a Wheeltronic or similar — that has no model tag left on it anywhere. They just know they need new cables, sheaves, hydraulic hoses, and possibly a power unit. Without a model number, we work backward from measurements: cable diameter and length, sheave bore size, hose fittings, and overall lift dimensions. It takes longer than pulling a part number off a tag, but it’s entirely doable, and we’ve matched parts for lifts that had no paperwork left at all.

This matters for restoration shops especially, because a lot of the used lifts that end up in family garages in rural Iowa were bought secondhand decades ago with no documentation. We’d rather spend twenty minutes on the phone getting exact dimensions than guess and ship the wrong cable set. If your slab is solid and your lift is mechanically sound, replacing worn car lift parts on an old unmarked lift is often more cost-effective than buying new.

Cylinder Rebuilds vs New: A Real Cost Comparison

On heavier two-post lifts, especially older Rotary-style equipment common in commercial shops, we frequently get asked whether to rebuild an existing cylinder or replace it outright. Rebuilding makes sense when the housing and rod are in good shape and it’s just seals or a scored bore causing the leak. New cylinders make more sense when a lift has multiple cylinders showing wear at once — replacing one and rebuilding another just means you’re back in the same position again next year.

For a restoration shop running a lift daily under heavy frame and body loads, we generally lean toward new cylinders on any unit older than fifteen years, purely because the labor to pull and reinstall a cylinder is the same either way, and a rebuilt unit doesn’t always outlast a new one by much. We quote both options side by side so shops can decide based on their own lift’s age and how hard it gets used.

Cables, Sheaves, and the Safety Latch Mechanism

Beyond the slab, the parts that fail most often on older two-post lifts are cables, sheaves, and the safety latch mechanism — the mechanical lock that keeps a lift from dropping if hydraulic pressure is lost. We’ve had customers call in with a lift stuck because the latch release button and safety button share one switch, and when that switch fails, the whole lift is unusable until it’s replaced. For a family shop running restoration work, this isn’t a part you defer — a failed safety latch cable means the lift shouldn’t be used until it’s fixed.

Lower sheaves wear unevenly compared to upper sheaves because they carry more of the load path on most two-post configurations, and worn sheaves accelerate cable wear even after you’ve replaced the cables themselves. We always recommend replacing sheaves and cables together rather than one at a time — it’s a small difference in parts cost but a real difference in how long the new cables last.

Hydraulic Hoses and Power Units on Older Lifts

When a lift’s hydraulic hoses are original and the unit is old enough that nobody remembers the install date, we treat hose replacement as preventive rather than reactive. A hose failure under a loaded lift, especially with a frame or body off the chassis, is a bigger problem than a scheduled swap. Power units are a bigger investment, and we walk shops through whether a rebuild kit for the existing pump makes sense or whether a full replacement power unit is the better long-term call given the lift’s overall age and condition.

For unmarked or older lifts, we source power units by output pressure and reservoir size rather than by brand match, since exact OEM units aren’t always available for lifts that have been out of production for years. This is where sending photos and measurements really pays off — we can usually find a compatible power unit even when the original manufacturer no longer exists.

What to Check Before You Order Any Parts

Before ordering car lift parts for a restoration shop lift, walk through four things: slab thickness and condition, anchor depth relative to any rebar, the lift’s actual working dimensions if there’s no ID tag, and which components are showing wear versus which are original and untested. Shops that skip the slab check are the ones who call us back within a year with a lift that’s shifted or an anchor that’s pulled loose under load.
