A hydraulic cylinder does the actual lifting on most 2-post lifts, and the seals inside it are wear items, not lifetime parts. Over years of use, especially on a lift that’s sat outside or in an unheated pole barn near the border counties, the packing seals harden, crack, or simply wear thin from grit in the hydraulic fluid. Pre-Purchase Checklist: What to Physically Check Before You Pay

Before any money changes hands, run the lift up and down at least three full cycles while watching the cylinder rod for weeping fluid, scoring, or pitting. A rod with visible scratches will chew through a new seal kit almost immediately, so scoring is often a deal-breaker or at minimum a rod-replacement cost you need to negotiate into the price. Milky or cloudy fluid means water intrusion, which is common on lifts stored in barns without climate control — and water in the system accelerates seal degradation and pump wear together.

Drift testing matters more than most buyers realize. Load a vehicle, raise it to a comfortable working height, and time how long it takes to sink even a quarter inch. A tight cylinder with good seals should hold for well over ten minutes with no measurable drop. If it sinks within a minute or two under load, budget for a full cylinder rebuild kit rather than just a seal swap, because you may also be dealing with a scored barrel or a bad check valve in addition to worn packing.

Rebuild Kit vs. New Cylinder: Making the Call

Once you’ve identified the problem, the next decision is whether to rebuild with a seal kit or replace the cylinder outright. If the bore is clean and the rod isn’t scored, a rebuild kit is almost always the smarter move — it’s a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder and gets you back to factory-tight performance. Frayed cable strands, flat spots on sheaves, or a sheave that doesn’t spin freely are all signs the whole lift has been run hard without much maintenance, and you should price out a full parts refresh rather than assuming the cylinder is the only issue.
