An alignment lift isn’t just holding a car still — it’s being cycled up and down repeatedly while a tech swings the arms in and out to get pads under pinch welds precisely, then re-checks height multiple times per job. That repetitive arm movement puts continuous load on the arm restraint pins, the swing arm bushings, and the latch mechanism that keeps each arm locked once it’s positioned. In a general repair shop those parts might see light use for years. In an alignment bay running the same rack all day, every day, they wear out on a completely different timeline.

Arm Restraints: What They Do and When to Replace Them

The arm restraint is the mechanical stop that keeps a lift’s swing arm from rotating too far or dropping under load once it’s extended. On most two-post lifts it’s a spring-loaded pin or a cam-style latch that a tech releases to swing the arm, then re-engages once the pad is positioned. If that restraint is worn, sagging, or missing entirely, the arm can shift under the vehicle’s weight during a lift cycle — which on an alignment rack, where the car is being lifted and lowered multiple times per job, is a much higher-frequency risk than in a shop doing one lift per repair.

We recommend inspecting arm restraints at every PM visit on alignment equipment, not just annually. Signs it’s time to order replacement car lift parts include a restraint that doesn’t fully seat, visible wear grooves on the pin, or an arm that drifts even slightly when you let go of it unlocked. These parts are lift-specific — the restraint on a Rotary SPOA9 doesn’t interchange with a Challenger CL10 — so we always confirm model and serial before quoting, and if the tag’s gone we can often identify the part from a photo of the mechanism and a measurement or two.

Safety-Cam Engagement: The Part That Actually Holds the Car

The safety-cam (sometimes called the locking latch or dog) is what actually carries the vehicle’s weight once the lift reaches height — the hydraulics raise the carriage, but the cams engage into a ratcheting rail and take the load off the cylinder. On alignment lifts specifically, we see cams that don’t fully drop into the rail because the return spring has weakened from thousands of extra cycles, or because the rail itself has accumulated enough grime that the cam hangs up a notch early. Either issue means the lift isn’t sitting on a fully engaged mechanical lock, which is a serious safety gap on equipment holding a car steady for precision alignment measurements.

When you’re sourcing car lift parts for this issue, the safety-cam assembly usually needs to be ordered as a set with its return spring and sometimes the release cable, since a weak spring is often what caused the failure in the first place and replacing just the cam leaves the root cause in place. We also check the release handle and cable routing while we’re in there — a sticky release cable can make a tech think the cam engaged when it’s actually still riding partially disengaged. Cables and Sheaves: The Hidden Half of the Restraint System

On cable-drive two-post lifts, the equalizer cables and their sheaves work directly with the arm restraint and cam system to keep both columns rising evenly. If one cable stretches or a sheave starts binding, the carriage can rack slightly out of level, which throws off exactly the kind of precision alignment techs are trying to measure. We’ve had alignment shops call us thinking they had a cam problem when the real issue was a stretched cable making one side hang up before the cam could fully seat.

Ordering the right cable and sheave car lift parts means knowing exact cable diameter, length, and end-fitting style, plus sheave bore and groove profile — none of which is standardized across brands. We ask for photos with a tape measure in frame when there’s no ID tag, because guessing on cable length is the single most common return we see in this category. Ordering Without a Model Tag or Serial Number

This process takes a little longer than a straightforward model-and-serial order, so build in extra lead time if your lift is unmarked. We’ll also flag when a lift appears to be an older or discontinued brand where OEM parts are no longer made — in those cases we look for cross-compatible car lift parts from currently manufactured lines rather than leaving a shop stuck waiting on obsolete inventory that may never come back in stock.

Building a Stocking Plan for High-Cycle Bays
