We get calls almost every month from rural shop owners in that corridor who’ve already poured concrete or hung siding before calling us, and sometimes that means real compromises on what lift they can install. Step One: Know What You’re Actually Lifting
Before you spec a commercial car lift for garage installation, write down the heaviest vehicle or truck that will ever go on it — not the average one. Our farm shop customer worked mostly on pickups and a couple of passenger cars, doing suspension and shock replacement regularly enough that he needed the vehicle held rock-steady at full extension, not just up in the air. That use case pushes you toward a two-post with good arm reach and telescoping jack pads, since shock and strut work means pulling wheels and letting suspension hang loose, which shifts the load differently than a simple oil change.
We asked him for a real number, and it came back around 6,000-7,000 lbs for his heaviest one-ton work truck. That put him solidly in 9,000-10,000 lb two-post territory once you build in a safety margin, rather than trying to squeeze by on a lighter-duty unit. Step Two: Sequence the Building Around the Lift, Not After It
This is the part almost nobody does right. If you’re still in the planning stage of a shop build, get your lift dimensions before you finalize the concrete pour, the door height, and the electrical rough-in. A commercial car lift for garage use typically needs 11-14 feet of ceiling clearance depending on the model and your tallest vehicle with the lift fully raised, and if your trusses are already set at 10 feet, you’ve locked yourself out of most two-post options entirely.
Door height matters just as much, maybe more, since a vehicle has to physically drive in before it ever touches the lift arms. We’ve had customers with plenty of ceiling height who still couldn’t fit a raised truck box through their own overhead door. Sequence it as: lift capacity and footprint first, then ceiling height, then door height and width, then slab spec, then electrical for the power unit. Step Three: Get the Slab Spec Right the First Time
Concrete is the one thing you truly cannot fix cheaply after the fact. For a commercial car lift for garage install in the 9,000-10,000 lb class, we want a minimum 4-inch slab, though we’d rather see 4.5-6 inches with rebar reinforcement for anything getting daily farm-shop use with heavy trucks. Standard 4-inch unreinforced slab can work for lighter two-post units, but it’s tighter than most rural buyers expect once you add real-world load and vibration from regular use.
If you’re pouring new, tell your concrete contractor up front that a lift is going in and roughly where, so they can reinforce that section properly. If you’ve already got a slab down and it’s thinner than ideal, we can sometimes still install with epoxy anchors rated for the load, but we’ll tell you honestly if the concrete won’t support it — better to hear that before you buy than after a post fails to anchor properly.
Step Four: Decide Between Two-Post, Four-Post, and Mobile Column
Two-post commercial lifts are the workhorse choice for suspension and shock work because they leave the wheels hanging free, which you need when pulling components off the undercarriage. Four-post lifts are better suited to storage and alignment work where you want the vehicle resting on its own tires, and mobile column lifts make sense if you’re servicing heavier trucks or multiple vehicle types and want the flexibility to reposition columns rather than commit to a fixed footprint.
For our border-area customer doing regular shock and suspension jobs, two-post was the clear answer. If your farm shop is doing more general storage with occasional service work, a four-post commercial car lift for garage use might actually serve you better, especially if headroom is tight since some four-post models run lower overall height requirements than a comparable two-post.
Step Five: Plan Your Power and Air Before Install Day
Most commercial two-post and four-post lifts run on a 220V single-phase power unit, and rural shops sometimes discover on install day that their electrical panel wasn’t sized for it. Get an electrician out ahead of time, not the morning we show up with the lift on a trailer. If you’re doing suspension work, you’ll also want a real air compressor in the shop — impact guns for control arm bolts and strut assemblies are miserable without one, and that’s a separate line item people forget to budget.
We’d rather walk through this with you two months before delivery than show up to a shop that isn’t ready. It costs you nothing to call and talk through your power situation before the lift ships.
Step Six: Decide on Install vs. DIY Setup
Plenty of border-area customers are capable hands who could install a lift themselves, and some do. But a commercial car lift for garage use that’s out of level, under-torqued, or anchored into questionable concrete is a genuine safety issue, not just a warranty headache. We install across Iowa and into the border counties, and even customers who could do it themselves often have us handle anchoring and leveling while they handle the electrical hookup.
If you do go the DIY route, at minimum have someone check anchor torque and post-to-post leveling with a real level, not by eye. A lift that’s slightly out of plumb will bind and wear unevenly within a year, and that’s a preventable problem.
Step Seven: Budget for the Whole Job, Not Just the Lift
