Start With the Decision Tree: Budget First, Then Configuration

Every commercial vehicle lift decision we walk shop owners through starts with budget, not brand. If you’re working with a tighter number, a 2-post asymmetric lift in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range gets you working clearance and a place to park a car overnight, but it won’t stack a second vehicle underneath. If storage through the off-season is the actual goal, the budget needs to stretch to a 4-post storage lift or a 4-post lift with a rolling jack, because that configuration is the only one that reliably lets you park one vehicle on the deck and another beneath it.

From there the decision tree branches on ceiling height and floor type. A restoration shop with 14-foot or taller ceilings and a slab that can take anchors opens up every option, including drive-on lifts, which several of our clients near the border have chosen specifically because they don’t require the same anchoring depth as a 2-post and they load faster when you’re rotating multiple project cars through storage each week. Electrical Circuit Requirements Most Shops Get Wrong

Most 2-post and 4-post lifts in the 9,000 to 14,000 lb range run on a 220-volt single-phase circuit, typically 20 to 30 amps depending on the motor size, but older pole buildings and converted ag buildings near the Iowa-Missouri border frequently only have 110-volt service run to the shop area. That’s not a deal breaker, it just means an electrician needs to pull a dedicated circuit before install day, and that cost needs to be in the budget from the start, not discovered the week the lift arrives.

Three-phase power occasionally shows up in older converted shops or former commercial buildings, and if that’s what you have, most residential and light-commercial lifts still run fine on it with the right motor configuration, but you want to confirm that with us before ordering rather than after. But once you factor in the second vehicle stored underneath, a full parts inventory on rolling jacks, or a future project that’s heavier than expected, a 7,000 lb rated unit gets tight fast. We generally steer seasonal storage customers toward 9,000 to 12,000 lb capacity even when the vehicles themselves are lighter, because the extra margin costs relatively little more and it means you’re never turning away a heavier project car in the fall because your storage lift can’t handle it.

This matters even more for a restoration shop that takes in customer vehicles alongside personal projects. A commercial vehicle lift rated for 12,000 lb comfortably handles everything from a lightweight roadster to a 3/4-ton pickup someone drops off for winter storage, and that flexibility is worth more over five years than the modest savings on a lower-capacity unit.

Overhead Clearance and the Realities of Older Pole Buildings

Pole buildings built for ag use in the 1990s and 2000s often have side walls in the 12 to 14 foot range but trusses that drop clearance in the middle of the bay, and that detail gets missed constantly. We ask for wall height, truss height at the peak, and any obstructions like lighting or ductwork before recommending a 4-post storage configuration, because a lift that technically fits on paper can still clip a truss once a raised vehicle is on the deck. For shops with genuinely tight overhead, a low-profile 4-post or a scissor-style storage lift keeps the stacked height down without giving up the second-vehicle storage function.

We’ve also seen shops solve this by staggering lift placement, putting the tallest-clearance bay closest to the shop’s peak roofline and reserving the lower side walls for single-vehicle 2-post units used for active repair work rather than storage. That kind of layout planning during the pole-building design phase, if you’re building new, can add real storage capacity without any extra square footage.

Drive-On vs Rolling Jack: The Configuration Choice Restoration Shops Face

A drive-on commercial vehicle lift lets you pull a vehicle straight onto the deck without positioning arms under the frame, which matters for classics and restoration projects where pinch points and frame rust make arm placement tricky. It’s faster for storage rotation too, since there’s less setup time per vehicle. The tradeoff is that drive-on units typically need a slightly longer runway and don’t offer the same mid-air working access that arm-style lifts give you when you’re actually doing mechanical work rather than just storing the vehicle.

Rolling jack attachments solve the access problem by letting you lift the vehicle further off the deck for underbody work once it’s parked, which is the setup we recommend most often for shops that split time between storage and active restoration labor. If your shop genuinely only stores vehicles seasonally and does the mechanical work elsewhere, drive-on wins on speed. If the same bay does both jobs, the rolling jack configuration earns its keep.

Anchoring, Slab Thickness, and What Installers Actually Check

Every commercial vehicle lift installation starts with a slab inspection, and this is where seasonal-storage projects near the border sometimes hit a snag, because older pole building slabs poured for ag use weren’t always poured to the 4-inch minimum thickness with proper rebar that a heavier lift needs. We check slab thickness, age, and any visible cracking before scheduling install, and if the slab doesn’t meet spec, that’s a conversation we have upfront rather than a surprise on install day.
