Why Dealer Lifts Get Pulled Off Lots With No Slab History
When a dealership upgrades its service bay or closes a location, the lifts get sold off fast, often through a broker or an auction, with zero paperwork about how they were anchored or what the original slab specs were. That’s fine for the dealership — they’re not reinstalling it. But when that same two-post unit lands in your garage, you’re inheriting a piece of equipment engineered for a 5 to 6 inch commercial slab with rebar, and you’re bolting it into whatever your builder poured for a home garage, which is frequently 4 inches of plain concrete with no reinforcement at all.
We’ve walked into more than a few east-central Iowa garages where a buyer proudly showed us their new-to-them dealer lift, only for us to find the anchor bolts sitting in slab that couldn’t hold a car jack safely, let alone a loaded two-post lift with a truck up in the air during wheel bearing service. The lift itself wasn’t the problem. The foundation was. This is why we tell every buyer: the lift’s condition matters less than what you’re planting it in.
Minimum Slab Thickness for a Home Two-Post Lift
Most manufacturers, including BendPak and Atlas, specify a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete for lighter-duty two-post lifts, and 4.5 to 6 inches for anything in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range that a lot of dealer lifts fall into. That’s the manufacturer’s floor, not a target. If your garage slab is older, cracked, or was poured before you ever planned on owning a lift, 4 inches on paper doesn’t mean 4 inches of usable strength today.
We recommend having your slab core-tested or at minimum visually inspected by someone who installs lifts for a living before you commit to buying dealer lifts secondhand. A thin slab isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker — sometimes it means pouring a new 8 by 10 foot pad specifically for the lift footprint, which is far cheaper than repouring your whole garage floor. But guessing costs you a lift that racks, walks, or worse, pulls its anchors while a vehicle is in the air over your head during rotor or bearing work.
Rebar, Wire Mesh, and Why It Changes Everything
Rebar and wire mesh affect how concrete distributes load, but they also affect how you anchor a lift. Wedge anchors driven into a slab with rebar too close to the surface can crack the concrete around the hole, and mesh can interfere with drilling depth entirely. Older east-central Iowa garages, especially ones built in the 80s and 90s, are notorious for shallow rebar placement that nobody thought about until someone tried to install a lift.
Before buying dealer lifts off a lot or a private seller, ask whether the seller has any slab documentation from the original dealership. Usually they won’t. In that case, plan on a site visit before installation day, not after. The Anchor Bolt Pattern Problem With Used Dealer Lifts
Dealer lifts often come from commercial installations with different anchor bolt patterns than what a home two-post kit expects, especially if the unit is an older Rotary or a rebranded commercial model. That mismatch means new holes, which means more disturbance to a slab that may already be marginal. We’ve seen buyers get a great deal on a used lift only to discover the anchor spacing doesn’t match any documented pattern, forcing custom drilling that a thin or unreinforced slab simply can’t support safely.
This is where a pre-purchase inspection pays for itself. If we know the lift model and can pull anchor specs before you buy, we can tell you in advance whether your existing slab works, needs a new pour, or needs reinforcement. Buying first and asking questions later almost always costs more than a phone call up front.
Ceiling Height, Drainage, and Slab Slope Matter Too
Slab thickness isn’t the only structural detail that trips up home buyers on dealer lifts. Garage floors are often poured with a slope toward the door for drainage, and that slope changes how a two-post lift sits and how its arms clear a vehicle during wheel bearing service. A lift installed on a sloped slab without shimming and leveling can bind on the way up or down, which is a serious hazard, not a cosmetic issue.
We level every lift we install regardless of what the existing slab looks like, using shims rated for the load and checking both posts independently. If your slab slope exceeds what the manufacturer allows — usually a fairly small tolerance — that’s a factor in whether that used dealer lift you found is really the bargain it looks like on paper.
What a Pre-Purchase Slab Inspection Actually Involves
A real pre-purchase inspection for dealer lifts isn’t complicated, but it needs to happen before money changes hands, not after the lift is sitting in your driveway. We look at slab age and pour date if known, thickness via core sample or existing documentation, visible cracking or spalling, rebar or mesh presence and depth, and drainage slope. We also check the specific lift model’s anchor and weight specs against what the slab can realistically support.

Sometimes the honest answer after inspecting a slab is that buying used dealer lifts isn’t worth chasing.
