A standard two-post unit needs enough overhead room for the arms and carriage to travel to full height, which in most buildings means 12 to 14 feet of ceiling clearance once you account for the safety margin above the vehicle. Second, a lot of these platforms come with a rolling jack built into the deck, so you can pick up an axle for brake work without needing a separate floor jack. If your bay has a lower door header or a shared ceiling with mezzanine storage, this configuration usually wins the comparison outright.

Measuring Your Bay Before You Compare Anything

Before comparing model numbers, we always tell fleet owners to get three measurements: door height, door width, and true ceiling clearance at the point where the vehicle will be centered on the lift. A drive on auto lift needs enough width for mirrors and side steps on full-size trucks, and enough overhead room for the vehicle’s tallest point plus the platform’s rise. Western Illinois shops working out of older ag buildings often have trusses or lighting fixtures that eat into usable height in ways a flat ceiling number doesn’t capture.

Standard two-post lifts typically run on a straightforward single-phase circuit, while some higher-capacity drive on auto lift platforms, especially ones built for heavier fleet vehicles, may call for a 220-volt circuit depending on the motor size and pump configuration. We always confirm this with fleet owners early, because running new electrical service to an older ag building can add real time and cost to a project timeline.

If your shop already has 220v service pulled for welders or air compressors, this is usually a non-issue. If not, it’s worth knowing before you commit to a specific model so the electrical work can happen in parallel with the concrete and installation schedule rather than becoming a surprise delay after the equipment arrives. Making the Final Call for Your Shop

After walking through overhead clearance, door swing, floor condition, and power, most western Illinois fleet operators find the drive on auto lift wins the comparison for tire and wheel-focused shops with limited ceiling height. If your building already has generous clearance and your techs are doing more underbody and suspension work than wheel-off service, a two-post configuration might still make more sense.
