Buying a car lift automotive setup for a home shop is a different decision than buying one for a business, and the checklist is different too. A guy down in southwest Iowa called us in early spring about a used four-post he had found two counties over. He wanted it for alignment work on his own vehicles and a handful of friends’ trucks — nothing commercial, just weekends. Good plan. But he had not looked at the cables, had no idea what year it was built, and the seller could not produce a model tag. We walked him through what to check on the phone. He passed on that one and bought a different unit three weeks later that is still running fine. Here is the same checklist.

Decide What You Are Actually Going to Do Under There
Hobbyists routinely buy the wrong configuration because they buy on price and ceiling height instead of on the work. If your list is oil changes, exhaust, brake lines, and storage, a four-post is the friendlier choice — drive on, no arm positioning, no anchoring anxiety, and it doubles as a parking deck. If your list is suspension teardowns, wheel bearings, and anything that needs the wheels hanging, a two-post gives you unobstructed access and you will fight it far less.
Alignment work is the case that splits the difference and trips people up. Real alignment needs a level, rigid platform with slip plates up front and turn plates or a slotted rear runway, plus a way to load and unload the suspension. A generic four-post with no cutouts and no slip plates will let you do string alignments and rough toe checks, and that is honestly enough for a lot of weekend work on older vehicles. It is not enough for chasing a pull on a late-model truck with electronic steering angle. Be honest about which one you are doing. We have talked more than one southwest Iowa customer out of an expensive alignment-rack ambition and into a solid four-post plus a good set of turn plates, and they have been happier for it. Match the lift to the actual job list, not the fantasy one.
Check the Data Tag and the Paper Trail First
Before anything mechanical, find the serial tag. It is usually on a column, sometimes on the power unit bracket. You want manufacturer, model, capacity, and serial number. With those four things we can look up parts availability, find the manual, and tell you whether the unit was ever covered by a recall or service bulletin. Without them, you are buying an orphan, and an orphan car lift automotive setup is one broken carriage roller away from being scrap.
Also ask about ALI certification. Lifts certified to ANSI/ALI ALCTV carry a gold label and were third-party tested. Plenty of good uncertified lifts exist, especially older ones, but the label tells you something about how the thing was engineered. Ask whether the seller has the installation manual, the original invoice, and any inspection records. A homeowner who kept the manual in a folder probably also kept the locks greased. A seller who says “it came with the building” is telling you it has never been inspected. Neither is disqualifying, but they change the price you should pay and the amount of work you should plan on before first use. We have parts-looked-up hundreds of these for buyers who were standing in somebody’s garage with a phone, and it takes about five minutes.
Cables Are Where the Money Hides
On a four-post, the equalizer cables do not lift the vehicle — the hydraulic cylinder does — but they keep the runways level, and a failed cable means a runway drops until it catches a lock. On a two-post, the equalization cables synchronize the carriages. Either way, cables are wear items, and on a used unit they are the single most common thing we end up replacing.
Inspect them properly. Run a rag along the full length and feel for broken wires — a rag snags where a strand has popped. Look at the sheave grooves for grooving and flat spots. Check the cable ends and threaded studs for corrosion, especially in an unheated Iowa building where humidity swings all year. Look for kinks, flattened sections, and any spot where the cable has been riding on something it should not. Check tension: on most four-posts, properly tensioned cables have a small, roughly equal amount of deflection at midspan across all four. Wildly different tensions mean the unit is out of level and somebody has been adjusting one nut at a time. Any broken strands at all, any corrosion at the fitting, or any flattening means replace all cables as a set, not one. Replacing one on a car lift automotive unit with three worn ones just moves the failure to the next weakest cable.
Replacement Intervals and What Drives Them
There is no universal mileage number for lift cables. What there is: an annual inspection requirement, a manufacturer service interval in the manual, and a set of conditions that shorten the life. Duty cycle matters most. A commercial shop cycling a lift thirty times a day will wear cables in a few years. A weekend hobbyist cycling it twice a week may go a decade. But environment matters just as much as cycles, and this is where Iowa home shops get bitten.
An unheated, unconditioned garage in the southwest part of the state goes through hard freeze-thaw swings, and condensation forms on steel every time the temperature crosses the dew point. Road salt tracked in on vehicles accelerates it. Cables that sit under tension in that environment corrode from the inside of the strand where you cannot see it. Our practical rule for home users: inspect every six months, lubricate the cables with a proper wire rope lubricant annually, and plan on replacement somewhere in the eight-to-twelve year window even if they look acceptable. If the lift has been sitting unused in a damp building for years, treat the cables as suspect regardless of appearance. Cables are not expensive relative to the equipment, and we stock them for the common four-post and two-post models. Ordering the correct length and end fitting matters more than brand — send us the model and serial and we will match it.
Hydraulics, Locks, and the Power Unit
Cycle the lift all the way up and all the way down, empty, before you agree to anything. Listen for the locks. Every column or every latch position should engage with a clean, audible click, and you should hear them in unison, not one lagging two seconds behind. A lock that does not engage means a bent latch, a stretched release cable, or a seized pivot, and it is a safety defect, not a quirk.
Watch the cylinder rod as it extends. It should be clean, straight, and dry. Weeping at the gland seal is a rebuild or a replacement cylinder. Look under the power unit for a puddle and check the reservoir level and fluid condition — milky fluid means water intrusion, dark and burnt means it has been run hot. Check hose routing for chafing and check every fitting for a wet film. Then let the lift sit at height for ten or fifteen minutes on the locks with the pump off and see if a runway settles. Some drift is normal from thermal contraction; visible settling is not. Finally, check that the power unit motor voltage matches what you have available. A three-phase power unit on a used commercial car lift automotive package is a great deal right up until you learn what a phase converter costs. Single-phase 220V is what almost every home shop wants.
Your Slab, Your Ceiling, Your Door
Home garages are where the physical constraints bite hardest. Measure clear height to the lowest thing overhead — garage door track, opener rail, light fixtures. A typical residential garage runs 9 to 10 feet, which is fine for storage-height four-posts and marginal for anything else. If you want to stand under a truck comfortably, you need more, and that may mean raising the door to a high-lift or jackshaft opener to reclaim the track space.
Then the slab. Most residential garages were poured four inches over compacted fill, which is workable for a four-post and marginal for a two-post at higher capacities. Two-posts concentrate all the load into two anchor patterns and manufacturers are specific about thickness and PSI. If you do not know what you have, drill a small test hole in an inconspicuous spot and measure. Also check that the floor is reasonably level — a four-post can be shimmed, but if you are shimming an inch you have a bigger problem. Last, think about where the vehicle goes. Approach ramps need runout in front of the lift, and if the overhead door closes right at the end of the runway you will be doing three-point turns forever. Sketch it. The Short Version of the Checklist
Print this, or screenshot it, and take it with you. One: confirm manufacturer, model, capacity, and serial from the data tag. Two: ask for the manual and any inspection records. Three: inspect all cables full-length for broken strands, corrosion, kinks, and uneven tension — assume replacement as a set if anything looks off. Four: cycle it fully and listen for every lock engaging together. Five: inspect the cylinder rod, seals, hoses, and reservoir fluid. Six: verify the power unit voltage and phase match your service. Seven: measure your clear ceiling height, slab thickness, and approach runout before you commit. Eight: price the cables, anchors, and installation into the deal, not after it.
A used four-post that passes all eight is usually a good buy and can serve a weekend mechanic for many years. One that fails three or four is not a bargain, it is a project with a hidden invoice attached.
