A forward 2 post car lift is only as good as the concrete underneath it, and that’s a lesson a lot of third-generation family shops in northern Missouri learn the hard way when a lift anchor spins out mid-strut job. We’ve been called out to inspect slabs that looked fine to the eye but were nowhere close to what a Forward 900 or similar two-post model actually demands once you’re loading it up with a truck for suspension and shock replacement all day. Why Suspension Work Puts Extra Stress on the Slab

Suspension and shock replacement isn’t like an oil change. You’re cycling the lift up and down repeatedly, often with the vehicle rocking as techs pull struts, coil springs, and control arms under load. That dynamic stress transfers straight into the anchor bolts and, from there, into the concrete. A forward 2 post car lift anchored in thin or under-reinforced concrete will work fine for a month or two, then you’ll start seeing hairline cracks radiating out from the base plates. We’ve pulled anchors out of 3-inch slabs that looked solid until you actually torque-tested them.

Third-generation shops tend to be working in buildings that are decades old, and that’s exactly where we find the problems. The original slab might have been poured for a service bay doing light maintenance, not for a two-post lift cycling full-size trucks loaded down for suspension teardown. Before you set a forward 2 post car lift in an older northern Missouri shop, get the slab cored and measured. It’s a cheap test compared to a lift that shifts under a truck mid-job.

The Real Slab Thickness Number You Need

Most reputable two-post lift manufacturers, including Forward, specify a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete for anchoring, but that number assumes a properly cured slab with a minimum compressive strength around 3,000 PSI — and that’s the floor, not the target. For a forward 2 post car lift handling repeated suspension work with trucks in the 8,000 to 10,000 lb range, we recommend 4.5 to 6 inches of slab thickness whenever a new pour is on the table. Thicker concrete gives the anchor bolts more material to bite into and spreads the load over a wider area, which matters when you’re cycling the lift dozens of times a day.

Age matters as much as thickness. Concrete needs a full 28 days to cure to its rated strength, and installing a two-post lift on a slab that’s only a week or two old is asking for trouble. We’ve had customers push back on this timeline because they wanted the bay back in service, but a lift set into green concrete will never anchor properly no matter how deep you drive the bolts. If you’re pouring new for a forward 2 post car lift, plan your install date a full month out.

Rebar Placement and Reinforcement

Rebar isn’t just for load-bearing walls — it changes how a slab handles the concentrated point loads a two-post lift puts on four base plates. For new pours under a forward 2 post car lift, we specify a minimum of #3 rebar on a 12-inch grid, tied and set at mid-depth in the slab, not just laid on the ground before the pour. Mesh wire alone doesn’t cut it for lift anchoring; it helps with surface cracking but doesn’t give you the tensile strength you need directly under the columns.

If you’re retrofitting an existing slab that doesn’t have rebar where the lift columns will sit, your options are limited — you can’t easily add rebar to cured concrete. In that case we look at either relocating the lift to a section of slab with better reinforcement, or cutting out and repouring a pad specifically sized for the lift footprint with proper rebar and thickness. It costs more upfront, but it’s far cheaper than dealing with a lift that fails an anchor inspection two years into suspension and shock work.

Anchor Bolt Selection for Heavy Suspension Loads

The anchor bolts themselves matter almost as much as the slab. A forward 2 post car lift typically ships with wedge anchors sized for standard commercial use, but shops doing heavy suspension work day in and day out should consider upgrading to larger diameter anchors with deeper embedment. We’ve retrofitted shops that were pulling loose anchors every six months simply because the original bolts weren’t matched to the vibration and load cycling of constant strut and shock replacement.

Embedment depth needs to hit at least the manufacturer’s minimum, but going slightly deeper when the slab allows it buys you a real margin of safety. We also always recommend torquing anchors to spec with a calibrated wrench, not just tightening until it feels right. A loose anchor on one corner of a two-post lift under a truck mid-suspension-job is how shops end up with a lift that racks sideways. It’s a small detail that separates a lift that lasts fifteen years from one that needs re-anchoring in three.

Signs Your Existing Slab Won’t Hold Up

Before ordering a forward 2 post car lift, walk your bay and look for warning signs. Cracks that run through where the base plates would sit, previous patch jobs, or a slab that sounds hollow when you tap it with a hammer are all red flags. Shops that have been in the same building for two or three generations often have slabs poured in stages, with seams that aren’t obvious until you’re drilling anchor holes and hit a joint instead of solid concrete.

We also see shops that assume because a smaller lift or jack sat in that spot for years, the slab must be fine for a two-post lift. That’s not a safe assumption — a rolling floor jack spreads load differently than four fixed anchor points holding a truck up in the air for an hour of shock work. If there’s any doubt, a core sample costs a fraction of what it costs to deal with a lift failure. We’d rather tell you the slab needs work before the install than get a call after.

Working With What You’ve Got in an Older Shop

Not every northern Missouri shop can afford to repour a bay, and we understand that. If your existing slab is close to spec but not perfect, there are still ways to make a forward 2 post car lift work safely. Sometimes that means relocating the lift a few feet to land on a thicker or better-reinforced section of the pad. Sometimes it means adding a reinforced footing pad poured on top of the existing slab, tied into it properly, specifically under the lift footprint.

What we won’t do is anchor a two-post lift into concrete we know won’t hold, regardless of how much a shop wants to get the bay running. Suspension and shock work generates real force on that equipment, and a shortcut on the slab shows up eventually — usually at the worst possible time, with a vehicle in the air. We’d rather walk a third-generation shop through the honest options than sell a lift we know is going to fail its foundation.

Getting the Install Right From the Start

When we install a forward 2 post car lift for a shop doing heavy suspension and shock replacement work, the slab inspection happens before the lift ever comes off the truck. We check thickness with a core sample or existing drawings when available, confirm cure time on any recent pours, and map out anchor points against known rebar or seams. It’s a slower process than just bolting a lift down wherever it fits, but it’s the difference between a lift that’s still solid in fifteen years and one that needs re-anchoring before the warranty is even up.

For shops that have been passed down through three generations, the building itself often carries history the current owners don’t fully know — additions, old pits filled in, sections poured at different times. We treat every install as its own investigation rather than assuming the last lift’s footprint tells the whole story. Get the slab right, and a two-post lift built for suspension work will outlast the shop’s next ownership change too.
