Every service manager we’ve worked with has the same complaint about lift shopping: brochures list a headline capacity number and not much else, but the number that actually determines whether a lift works in a given bay is the combination of rise height, overall width, and arm reach relative to the vehicle mix rolling through the door. Capacity Tiers and What They Actually Mean in Daily Use

Forward’s two-post lineup spans a range of capacity tiers, and picking the right one for a dealership isn’t as simple as buying the highest number available. A lift rated well above what any vehicle on the lot weighs isn’t wasted capacity — it’s a safety margin and a hedge against the fleet mix changing — but oversizing every bay also means paying for column width and footprint you don’t need for smaller sedans and compact SUVs that still make up part of daily traffic.

We recommended a mixed approach: heavier-capacity forward car lift units in the two bays that handle trucks and larger SUVs most often, and a mid-capacity tier in the remaining bays for sedans, compacts, and routine maintenance work like oil changes and pan gasket jobs. That mix let the dealership match lift capability to actual bay usage patterns instead of overbuying uniformly across five stalls, which kept the total quote in a more reasonable range without under-serving the heaviest vehicles they service.

Rise Height and Truck Clearance

The dealership’s biggest operational headache with their old lifts was insufficient rise height for underbody work on lifted trucks — technicians were stooping under vehicles that weren’t high enough for comfortable pan gasket access, which slows down flat-rate jobs and increases the chance of a rushed, sloppy reseal. We compared maximum rise across several Forward models and matched the tallest-rise options to the bays most likely to see lifted trucks and larger SUVs.

Extra rise height isn’t free — taller columns mean a taller ceiling clearance requirement, and that’s a real constraint in older dealership buildings with fixed truss heights. We measured ceiling clearance in every bay before finalizing the spec list, because a forward car lift that can’t reach full rise due to a low ceiling gives back exactly the advantage you bought it for. Two of the five bays had enough clearance for the tallest-rise model; the rest got a slightly shorter-rise unit that still cleared the fleet’s actual vehicle heights with margin.

Overall Width and Bay Footprint

Dealership service bays are rarely as wide as anyone would like, and column width plus swing arm reach determines whether a lift actually fits with room to open doors and walk around the vehicle. We measured each bay’s usable width after accounting for adjacent equipment, air lines, and walkways, then matched that against the overall width spec for each forward car lift model under consideration.

Asymmetric arm configurations gave this dealership better usable space in narrower bays because the arm geometry shifts vehicle positioning slightly off-center, improving clearance to adjacent lifts and support columns. In the two narrowest bays, that geometry difference was the deciding factor over a symmetric configuration with technically similar capacity — the symmetric version would have worked on paper but left uncomfortably tight clearance in daily use with a technician and a rolling toolbox both trying to occupy the same space.

Arm Reach and Pad Configuration for Pan Gasket Work

Engine oil pan gasket work depends heavily on stable, well-placed lift points, and that’s an arm reach and pad question as much as a capacity question. Trucks and larger SUVs often need longer arm reach to get pads under factory-rated lift points without stressing frame rails, and we cross-checked arm reach specs across the Forward lineup against the dealership’s most common lifted-truck models to confirm adequate reach without maxing out arm extension, which reduces stability at full rise.

The finished comparison gave the dealership a clear, bay-by-bay spec list: two higher-capacity, taller-rise forward car lift units for the truck-heavy bays, and three mid-capacity units with asymmetric arms for the remaining bays handling a mixed fleet. Each spec was tied to a measured constraint — ceiling height, bay width, or typical vehicle type — rather than a blanket capacity upgrade across all five stalls, which kept the project within a defensible budget while solving the actual operational bottleneck.

We coordinated the install around the dealership’s service schedule, staging two bays at a time so the department never lost more than partial capacity on any given day. Concrete inspection came first in every bay, since a dealership floor poured decades ago doesn’t automatically meet current anchor requirements for higher-capacity lifts. All five installs passed inspection on the original slab after core testing confirmed adequate thickness, which saved the dealership a costly floor modification.
