Why Dealership Service Bays Default to a Forward Configuration

A forward car lift places both arm sets in front of the front wheels rather than straddling the vehicle at the doors, which opens up the entire underbody from bumper to bumper once the vehicle is up. For exhaust replacement, catalytic converter swaps, transmission service, and driveshaft work, that unobstructed sightline saves real time — techs aren’t repositioning a jack or fighting arm placement mid-job. Dealership bays that see a steady mix of oil changes, exhaust repairs, and driveline diagnostics benefit from this layout because the arms tuck cleanly under factory lift points without competing for space with a sagging exhaust system.

The tradeoff is column placement. Because a forward lift’s columns sit further ahead relative to the vehicle’s center of gravity, the bay itself needs a specific footprint to keep the vehicle balanced and the columns out of the door swing path. We’ve walked dealership managers through this more than once — the lift spec sheet says one thing, but the actual bay, with its support columns, drain trench, and adjacent bay doors, often needs a slightly different anchor pattern than what’s on paper. That’s why we do an on-site layout check before any concrete work starts, not after the lift shows up.

Bay Dimensions That Actually Work for Full-Size Trucks and SUVs

For a bay that needs to handle both sedans and full-size trucks or SUVs, we typically recommend a minimum clear width of 12 feet and a depth of at least 24 feet from the bay door to the back wall, giving enough runway for the vehicle to pull in straight and for a tech to walk the full perimeter once it’s raised. Ceiling height matters just as much — a forward car lift raising a raised 4×4 pickup to full extension needs 13.5 to 14 feet of clearance in many cases, and dealerships retrofitting an older service bay sometimes discover their trusses or HVAC ductwork sit lower than that.

We measure twice before recommending a lift capacity or arm configuration. A 9,000 lb or 10,000 lb two-post model handles most dealership drive-through work, but if the bay regularly sees one-ton trucks or work vans for driveline service, we bump that spec up rather than let the shop find out the hard way during a heavy pull.

Sequencing the Build-Out: Slab, Anchors, Power, Then Lift

The single biggest mistake we see in garage build-outs is ordering the lift before the slab is confirmed. A forward car lift needs a slab of adequate thickness and cure time — generally a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, though we verify this on-site with a core check rather than trusting old blueprints, especially in older east-central Iowa buildings where the slab may have been poured decades before overhead lifts were ever considered.

Once the slab is verified, we sequence anchors, then electrical for the power unit, then the lift itself. Trying to run conduit after a lift is bolted down means drilling around columns that are already in the way. We coordinate this timeline with the dealership’s electrician directly so the 220V circuit for the power unit is roughed in before our crew shows up to set columns. Getting this order right shaves days off the total install timeline and avoids the callback visits that happen when a bay isn’t ready for what’s actually being delivered.

Clearance for Exhaust and Driveline Tools, Not Just the Vehicle

Raising a vehicle on a forward car lift is only half the equation — the other half is whether a tech can actually get a torch, a pipe cutter, or a transmission jack underneath once it’s up. We ask dealership managers what tools their techs actually use daily, because a bay with 12 feet of width looks generous until a rolling transmission jack and a tech both need to occupy the same six feet under a raised truck.

For exhaust work specifically, we recommend leaving a few extra feet of depth behind the rear columns so a tech can walk a full exhaust system out the back without clipping a wall or a neighboring lift’s footprint. Driveline work benefits from the same buffer at the front, since pulling a driveshaft or dropping a transfer case often means backing equipment away from the vehicle entirely. None of this shows up on a standard lift spec sheet, which is exactly why we walk the floor with the service manager before finalizing a layout.

Choosing Arm Length and Pad Configuration for Mixed Fleets

Dealership bays rarely service just one body style, and a forward car lift’s arm configuration needs to flex accordingly. Shorter front arms with a wider swing radius suit sedans and crossovers, while trucks and vans need arms that can extend far enough forward to catch factory frame points without the vehicle’s nose crowding the columns. We spec adjustable-length arms on most dealership installs for exactly this reason — it’s cheaper to buy the flexibility once than to special-order a second arm set later.

Pad height and screw-pad adapters matter more than most buyers expect, too. A lift that’s perfect for a sedan’s pinch welds can leave a lifted truck’s frame rails just out of reach without the right stacking pads. We keep a set of adapter pads in stock specifically because dealership fleets change year over year, and a tech shouldn’t have to improvise with wood blocks to make contact points work.

Anchoring and Concrete Requirements Specific to Iowa Freeze-Thaw Cycles

East-central Iowa’s freeze-thaw cycle is harder on slabs than a lot of installers account for. A forward car lift’s anchors rely on the concrete holding torque spec over years of seasonal expansion and contraction, and a slab that looks solid in July can have hairline stress from a hard winter that compromises anchor pull-out strength. We test anchor torque during install and again at follow-up service visits, because catching a loosening anchor early is a five-minute fix — catching it after a lift has shifted under load is a much bigger problem.

We also pay attention to how a bay was poured originally. Additions and retrofitted service bays sometimes have a control joint running directly through where a column needs to sit, and we’ve had to shift a planned layout by a foot or two more than once to keep anchors out of a joint. This is another reason the on-site walk-through happens before ordering, not after.

What Ongoing Service Looks Like After the Bay Is Running

Once a forward car lift is anchored, powered, and running exhaust and driveline jobs daily, the maintenance conversation shifts to cables, hydraulic seals, and lock mechanisms that see heavy cycling. Dealership bays running multiple lifts on a rotation see far more daily cycles than a typical independent shop, and that cycle count is what drives our recommended service interval — we suggest inspection every six months for high-volume dealership use versus annually for lighter-use shops.
