A four post car storage lift only works as well as the garage it goes into, and we learned that lesson again on a recent job in Waukee where a home mechanic wanted a mobile setup that could double as a workspace for CV axle and half-shaft jobs on his own fleet of cars. He had the vision, but like most homeowners he hadn’t thought through the order of operations: concrete condition, ceiling clearance, electrical, and placement all have to line up before the lift ever gets bolted down. Step One: Measuring the Garage Before You Order Anything

Before we quote a four post car storage lift, we ask for three numbers: bay width, ceiling height, and slab thickness. The Waukee garage was an oversized bay, plenty wide, with a little over 11 feet of clearance and standard poured concrete. That clearance mattered because a loaded platform on a four post lift adds significant stack height, and if you’re storing a raised truck or an SUV on top, you can run out of headroom fast. We also asked about the vehicles going on it, since a car meant for CV axle and half-shaft work needs enough width between the runways to get a floor jack in and enough length to keep the wheels planted while someone works underneath.

Slab thickness is the other piece people skip. Four post lifts distribute weight through the posts down to the floor, and most home installations do fine on standard 4-inch slabs as long as the concrete is in reasonable shape, but we still check for cracking, spalling, or old oil stains that hint at a weaker pour. Getting these measurements right before ordering saves a homeowner from a lift that shows up and doesn’t fit, which is a far more expensive mistake than a five-minute tape-measure conversation up front.

Choosing Between a Storage-Only and a Working Setup

Not every four post car storage lift needs to double as a service lift, but this customer wanted both. He needed to store one car up top while doing CV axle and half-shaft replacement on a second vehicle underneath or on the runways. That changes the spec. We steered him toward a model with a higher weight rating and the option to add rolling jacks that slide between the runways, letting him lift a wheel off the ground without a separate floor jack fighting for space. If all he needed was storage, a lighter-duty model with a simpler ramp package would have saved him money.

This is where a lot of buyers overspend or underspend. Someone who just wants to park a second car above a daily driver doesn’t need casters or rolling jacks. Someone doing real mechanical work under the lift, even occasional axle jobs, benefits from spending a little more on the accessory package. We’d rather talk a customer down to the right lift than sell them something oversized for the job.

Sequencing the Electrical and Hydraulic Hookups

Once the lift itself is chosen, the build-out sequence really starts. Most four post storage lifts run on standard 110V or 220V circuits depending on the power unit, and we always recommend having an electrician run a dedicated line before delivery day rather than after. In the Waukee garage, the customer already had a 220V run from a previous project, which saved a step, but plenty of installs stall out because the power isn’t there when the lift arrives. We coordinate with the customer’s electrician on amperage and outlet placement so the power unit sits close enough to the lift without a hydraulic hose running across a walkway.

Hydraulic setup is simpler but still sequence-dependent. The unit needs to be filled, bled, and tested before the platform ever goes up for the first time, and we walk through this with every install so the customer knows what a normal cycle sounds and feels like. Getting the electrical and hydraulic steps done in the right order, rather than improvising on site, is what keeps an install to a single day instead of stretching into a return trip.

Ramp, Runway, and Approach Angle Placement

Where the lift sits inside the bay determines how easy it is to drive on and off. We always walk the approach angle with the customer before final placement, since a four post car storage lift positioned too close to a garage door or a side wall makes it awkward to line up wheels on the runways, especially with a lower vehicle. In this garage, we set the lift a few feet back from the door opening so there was enough straight-line approach to drive on confidently without three-point turns.

We also talk through which end gets the ramps versus a flush approach, since some owners prefer a walk-up ramp on one end for easier foot traffic and a drive-through configuration on the other. Getting this placement right the first time avoids the common problem where a homeowner installs a lift dead center in a bay only to realize afterward that they can’t open a car door on one side without hitting a support post.

Working Around In-Floor Heat and Rebar

A growing number of Iowa garages we work in have in-floor heat and rebar reinforcement, and it changes how we anchor a four post car storage lift. Depending on the lift design, some models rest on baseplates that spread the load without deep anchoring, while others require anchors set into the slab. When rebar or PEX tubing is present, we map out anchor locations carefully, sometimes using a scanner to avoid drilling into a heat line. This isn’t unique to Waukee; we see it constantly in newer pole buildings and finished home garages across central Iowa.

The upside of a four post design in these situations is that many configurations need less invasive anchoring than a two post lift, which relies entirely on anchor strength in the floor. That’s part of why homeowners with in-floor heat or thinner reinforced slabs often lean toward four post storage lifts in the first place. It’s one less headache when the floor itself has constraints you can’t just drill through.

Mobile Casters: What They Actually Solve

Homeowners ask about caster kits more than almost any other accessory, and it’s worth explaining what they do and don’t solve. Casters let you roll the entire four post car storage lift to a different spot in the garage without professional recruiting equipment, which is useful if you’re still deciding on a permanent layout or you need the bay clear occasionally for a big project. They don’t turn the lift into something you casually reposition every week; moving a loaded or even unloaded four post unit is still a two-person job with the wheels engaged and the load properly balanced.

In the Waukee case, mobility wasn’t part of the final spec since the owner had already settled on bay placement, but we’ve installed caster kits for other Iowa customers who wanted the flexibility during a build-out phase, exactly like the customer described in the chunk who wanted to drag the lift around before committing. If you’re not sure about your final layout, that’s a legitimate reason to spend a little extra on casters rather than bolt down a decision you might regret.

Every install ends with a full walkthrough: cycle the platform up and down several times, check for even rise across all four posts, verify the safety locks engage properly, and confirm the ramps and jack accessories sit securely.
