This particular Iowa customer had a genuinely solid foundation to work with: 6 inches of concrete with rebar reinforcement, which is thicker than what most home garages get poured with. That thickness matters because a four post car storage lift spreads its load across four contact points instead of concentrating it at two anchored posts like a two-post lift does. Even so, we still had to account for the in-floor heat lines when planning where the columns would sit, since you never want to core-drill or anchor directly into a heat run.

For anyone pouring new concrete specifically to support a four post car storage lift, we generally recommend a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured, unreinforced or reinforced slab, with 6 inches being the safer target if you expect to store heavier vehicles or move the unit around later. That’s a smart way to spec a four post car storage lift — buy above your heaviest current vehicle, not right at the edge of it, because trucks and project vehicles tend to get heavier over time, not lighter. With a 30-foot-wide bay, there was plenty of clearance to run the lift at full width without crowding walls or adjacent parking spots.

Ceiling height was 16 feet, which gave generous headroom for the lifted vehicle plus safety locks engaged, and left room for a rolling jack or caster kit if the owner ever wanted to reposition the unit before committing to a permanent spot. We talked through caster options in that call too, since dragging a four post car storage lift around a shop floor while you finalize placement is a common ask, and it’s a feature worth discussing up front rather than adding later.

Color, Delivery, and the Small Details That Add Up

This customer wanted the lift in blue to match shop equipment, wanted to purchase lift oil at the same time, and preferred delivery only if it made financial sense over picking the unit up himself. These aren’t throwaway details. Color options, fluid needs, and delivery logistics all affect the final quote, and we’d rather nail them down in the first conversation than discover a mismatch after the truck shows up. We also noted that this was a no-install order, meaning the customer planned to set the lift up himself. This is one of the underrated advantages of four-post lifts generally: they’re far more forgiving of imperfect or utility-dense slabs than two-post lifts, which need four deep, load-bearing anchors sunk into clean concrete.

We still checked flatness across the full 30-foot run, because even a baseplate unit needs a level surface to sit correctly, and uneven concrete can cause a runway to rock or bind over time. A quick check with a long level or laser line during the site visit catches this before it becomes a callback.

Storage Use vs. Service Use: Setting Expectations

This install was primarily for storage, with light service work as a secondary use, which changes a few things about setup. A storage-focused four post car storage lift doesn’t need rolling jacks between the runways unless the owner also wants to change tires or work underneath a raised vehicle. We made sure to explain the difference between casters, for repositioning the whole unit, and rolling bridge jacks, for lifting a wheel off the runway while the vehicle is parked up top, since those two accessories get confused constantly.

If oil changes or brake work are even an occasional possibility, we recommend budgeting for at least one rolling jack from day one. Retrofitting later is possible but adds cost and downtime you can avoid by speccing it correctly during the original order.
