Why Restoration Work Needs a Different Layout Than General Repair

A garage two post lift built for oil changes and brake jobs gets used differently than one built around restoration and metal work. Restoration jobs keep a vehicle up for days or weeks at a time — cutting out rust, welding in patch panels, stripping undercoating — not the quick in-and-out of routine maintenance. That changes how you plan the bay around it. You need clearance not just for the vehicle and the lift arms, but for a welding cart, grinder hoses, a work light stand, and enough open floor to move around the car from every angle without ducking under an arm.

It also changes how long the lift occupies your only bay. If you’ve got a one- or two-car garage and the lift is tied up with a project car for a month, plan your layout so you still have a walking path to tools, a bench, and storage without squeezing past the vehicle. Column Placement and Clearance for Metal Work

Column placement is the single decision that shapes everything else in a restoration bay. Standard two post lift columns need clearance not just for the vehicle doors to swing, but for you to comfortably work with a grinder or welder along the rocker panels and lower quarters without your elbow hitting a column. We generally recommend planning for at least three feet of clear space on the working side of each column, more if you’re doing full frame or floor pan work where you’ll be under the vehicle for extended stretches.

Overhead clearance matters here too, in a way general repair shops don’t think about. If you’re planning to hoist an engine or a body off the frame at some point, factor in whether your two post lift setup and ceiling height will let you run a hoist or gantry crane through the same bay without interference. Southeast Iowa garages with 10 to 11 foot ceilings usually work fine for the lift itself, but leave little room for anything overhead once a vehicle’s up — worth mapping out before you pour a slab or finalize a build.

Floor Space for Tools, Carts, and Fabrication Work

Restoration work generates more loose equipment around the vehicle than routine maintenance ever does — welding carts, sheet metal racks, sandblasting gear, parts bins for everything you pull off the car. Laying out your garage two post lift bay means deciding now where that gear lives so it’s not blocking the lift’s swing path or your walking lanes once the car is up in the air.

A good rule we give restoration customers: keep a clear zone at least four feet wide running the length of the bay on at least one side, dedicated purely to movement and tool carts. Everything else — shelving, parts storage, a bench — goes on the opposite wall or in a separate area entirely. This keeps the actual lift bay from turning into storage creep, which is the most common layout mistake we see in home garages a year or two after install.

Concrete and Utility Planning Before the Lift Goes In

Restoration bays put different demands on concrete and utilities than a quick-service bay does. You’ll likely want welding outlets, dedicated air lines, and good lighting positioned around where the lift sits, not just wherever the existing outlets happen to be. Plan these before the two post lift is installed, because running new electrical or air lines around an already-anchored lift is far more work than doing it during the build.

Concrete thickness matters just as much here as anywhere — most two post lifts need at least 4 inches of properly cured slab for safe anchoring, and older southeast Iowa garage floors sometimes fall short. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for a restoration bay, this is the moment to get it right, since correcting thin or cracked slab after the fact means pulling the lift back out.

Workflow: Getting the Vehicle On and Off Efficiently

Even in a restoration-focused bay, you’ll be running the vehicle up and down repeatedly — moving it for paint booth trips, parts runs, or just rolling it out to make room for a second project. Plan your garage two post lift placement so the vehicle has a straight, clear path in and out without three-point turns around support columns or storage racks. This sounds minor until you’re doing it for the twentieth time on a long build.

We also recommend positioning the lift so the control switch is easily reachable from a clear standing spot, not wedged between the column and a wall. Restoration work means a lot of dirty hands and awkward positions already; a control panel you can’t reach cleanly without stepping over debris just adds friction to a process that’s already slow enough by nature.

Choosing the Right Lift for Restoration-Specific Loads

Restoration vehicles aren’t always heavier than daily drivers, but they’re often less predictable — missing panels change weight distribution, and partially disassembled cars don’t always have clean, obvious lift points. Leave yourself room to grow — extra floor space you don’t fill on day one is far better than a garage two post lift crammed into a bay with zero flexibility for what comes next.
