Measure the Ceiling Before You Fall in Love With a Lift
We get a version of the same lead almost weekly: someone has an 11 or 12 foot ceiling, wants a 2-post or 4-post setup, and assumes any home garage car lift system will clear that height with a car on top. It won’t always. A typical 2-post lift needs the vehicle raised to a comfortable working height, usually 5 to 6 feet, plus the height of the vehicle itself, plus the lift’s own overhead assembly if it has one. On a 4-post storage unit, you’re adding the deck height, the vehicle height, and clearance for anything mounted on the roof rack or a raised project car’s frame. In an 11-foot garage, that math gets tight fast, especially with a taller SUV or a lifted truck stored on the top level.

Garage door tracks, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all steal inches you were counting on. Door Swing and Door Height Matter More Than People Expect
Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door height and door swing sink just as many home garage installations. We’ve had customers with plenty of overhead room whose garage door track was the actual limiting factor, because the vehicle has to clear the open door on its way in before it ever gets near the lift. If you’re running a 4-post lift with a car parked on the upper deck permanently, remember that vehicle needs to come down eventually, which means the door needs to open fully and stay clear the whole time.
Roll-up doors with low headroom tracks, garage doors that open into a tight side yard, or a shop with a low header above the door opening can all quietly disqualify a lift you already had your heart set on. Two Low Cars or One High One: Why Adjustable Locking Height Matters

For restoration and metalwork specifically, this adjustability is the difference between a lift that’s genuinely useful and one that’s just expensive storage. You’ll want the car up high for underbody sandblasting or frame repair, medium height for panel work along the rockers, and lower for anything near the roof or hood. A lift with tight locking increments gives you all three without re-rigging anything.
Weight Capacity Versus What You’re Actually Lifting
Most home garage projects involve vehicles well under 3 tons, and yet we still see people default to the heaviest capacity lift they can find, assuming bigger is automatically safer. It’s not that a heavier-rated lift is bad, but capacity should match your actual fleet plus a reasonable margin, not an imagined future truck. A 9,000 to 10,000 lb rated lift comfortably handles nearly anything in a residential garage, including full-size trucks, and gives you headroom for whatever project shows up next without paying for capacity you’ll never use.

Restoration cars with modified frames, missing bumpers, or aftermarket subframes sometimes need different pad configurations than stock vehicles, and that’s worth mentioning when you get a quote so the arms and adapters are right the first time.
Concrete Thickness and Anchoring in Older Garages
Central Iowa has plenty of garages built decades ago with 4-inch slabs, and plenty of newer builds poured thicker specifically for equipment like this. A 2-post lift anchors into the slab and relies on that concrete to hold the anchors under load, so slab thickness and condition genuinely affect which lift is appropriate and how it gets installed. We test the slab before every install rather than assuming it’s fine, because cracked, thin, or poorly cured concrete changes the anchoring plan.
If your slab is borderline, that doesn’t necessarily rule out a home garage car lift system, but it may steer you toward a 4-post configuration that distributes load differently, or toward reinforcing a pad specifically under the lift footprint before installation day. Better to know that during the quote stage than after the posts are already ordered.
Mobile Column Lifts as an Alternative for Tight Spaces
Not every Des Moines metro garage is a clean rectangle with generous ceiling height and a wide door. For narrower spaces or garages with obstructions that rule out fixed 2-post or 4-post setups, mobile column lifts are worth a look. They don’t require the same overhead clearance as a 2-post, since there’s no overhead beam, and they can be repositioned or removed from the floor entirely when you need the space for something else.
