Why Electrical Planning Comes Before the Lift Arrives

Most people budget for concrete thickness and ceiling height, then get blindsided by the electrical circuit question during install week. A typical two-post home garage car lift system runs on a dedicated 220-volt single-phase circuit, usually 20 or 30 amp depending on the power unit motor size. If you’re running an air-over-hydraulic system or adding accessories like a rolling jack or tire changer down the road, you want that circuit sized with headroom, not right at the edge. For this Iowa City shop, the pole building already had 220V service run to the shop for a welder, but it wasn’t dedicated — sharing a circuit with other high-draw equipment is asking for tripped breakers mid-lift, which is more than an inconvenience when a vehicle is in the air.

We also talked through single-phase versus three-phase before the order went in. Almost every home garage car lift system sold for residential or small-shop use is single-phase because that’s what’s available in a pole building or converted garage. We came out, re-tensioned both cables, and checked the equalization between the two columns. This is routine and expected — if your installer doesn’t mention it up front, ask, because customers who don’t know about early cable stretch sometimes assume something’s wrong when it’s actually just breaking in.

By month six, the shop was running regular RV and trailer brake jobs, sometimes multiple sessions a week, and the lift was holding up exactly as sized. We used that visit to also check hydraulic fluid level, inspect the safety lock mechanism for wear, and grease the roller assemblies on the carriages. None of it was urgent — it’s the kind of light maintenance that keeps a home garage car lift system running another ten or fifteen years instead of five.

Locking Heights and Why That Feature Matters for Brake Work

Ventilation, Lighting, and the Things Nobody Budgets For

A home garage car lift system doesn’t operate in isolation — it lives inside a building, and the building matters. This shop added supplemental LED lighting directly over the lift bay after the first month, because factory pole building lighting is rarely bright enough for detail brake work. We also recommend basic ventilation planning if you’re doing any brake cleaner or degreaser work regularly indoors, since fumes pool at floor level right where you’re working under a raised vehicle.

None of this is lift-specific advice exactly, but it’s what separates a shop that’s comfortable to work in from one that technically has the right equipment but is miserable to use daily.
