Whichever style you choose, plan your garage layout so the stored vehicle isn’t blocking your ability to work underneath the second car — that’s the whole point of the setup in the first place.

Step Four: Get the Weight Rating Right, With Room to Spare

Weekend mechanics often buy a lift sized exactly to their current car, then regret it a year later when they buy a truck or a project vehicle that’s heavier. We always recommend building in a buffer above your heaviest realistic vehicle rather than cutting it close. Home vehicle lifts are a long-term purchase, and the cost difference between adjacent weight tiers is usually smaller than people expect, especially compared to the cost of replacing an undersized lift down the road.

For most passenger vehicles and light trucks in Iowa garages, a lift rated in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound range covers a wide swath of what people actually own, with headroom for a future truck or trailer-towing vehicle. Some home vehicle lifts are sold with the expectation that a handy owner will assemble and anchor them, while others really should go in with a professional crew, especially anything in a two-post configuration where alignment and cable tensioning matter for safe operation. We’ve seen well-intentioned DIY installs that technically work but have alignment issues that show up as premature cable or roller wear within the first year.

If you’re a confident weekend mechanic who’s comfortable with anchoring and basic electrical, a mid-rise or four-post model can be a reasonable self-install with the right tools and a second set of hands. Two-post lifts, though, are where we most strongly recommend professional installation, since a misaligned post isn’t something you’ll necessarily notice until it becomes a real safety issue.

Step Six: Build the Total Cost Picture Before You Commit

The sticker price on home vehicle lifts is never the whole story. Add in delivery to your part of Iowa, professional installation if you’re going that route, any electrical upgrades, and potential concrete work, and the real total can run meaningfully above the base lift price.
