Concrete matters just as much as the layout. We want a minimum of 4 inches of unreinforced concrete for most home vehicle lifts, ideally poured to spec with proper cure time, not a thin patch slab from decades ago. We test the floor before we anchor anything, because a lift is only as strong as what it’s bolted into — and this is one area we won’t cut corners on regardless of which configuration you choose.

Rise Height and Real-World Working Clearance

The whole point of a two-post lift for someone doing oil changes and fluid service is getting comfortable, safe access underneath without crawling on a creeper. Baseplate lifts typically max out a little lower than overhead units because the arms and carriage have to clear the base channel, but most residential models still get a vehicle up around 5 to 6 feet at full rise, which is plenty of standing headroom for drain plugs, filters, and undercarriage inspection. Overhead lifts can sometimes push higher, which matters more in a commercial shop doing exhaust or transmission work all day than it does for someone changing their own oil on weekends.
