That’s the reality for a lot of rural farm shop owners around Marion, and it’s a question we hear regularly from people who’ve never bought a lift before and don’t know what to check before the truck shows up. A car lift uses hydraulic power, mechanical safety locks, and a rigid frame to raise a vehicle high enough for transmission access, but getting one delivered and installed correctly involves freight logistics most first-time buyers never think about. Checklist Item Five: Confirm Installation Includes Calibration for Safety-Lock Engagement

Beyond bolting columns to the floor, proper installation includes calibrating cable tension between columns (on cable-synced 2 post lifts), testing hydraulic pressure, and confirming that mechanical safety locks engage cleanly at every interval as the carriage rises. A lift that’s assembled but not properly calibrated can still operate, but it may lift unevenly side to side, which stresses arm restraints and accelerates wear on one column faster than the other.

For transmission work specifically, uneven lift height is more than an inconvenience — it changes the angle at which a transmission drops, making it harder to control with a transmission jack underneath. Rural shops sometimes go longer between inspections simply because there’s no shop next door doing it for them as a matter of course, but that’s exactly the environment where small issues — a fraying cable, a loosening anchor — can go unnoticed longest.
