The Basic Mechanics: How Does a Car Lift Work From the Ground Up

At its core, every car lift uses a power unit — typically an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump — to push fluid into a cylinder. That cylinder extends a piston, which either pushes a post-mounted carriage up a column (two-post and four-post lifts) or drives a scissor mechanism upward (scissor and mid-rise lifts). Cables or chains often synchronize the movement between posts so both sides rise at exactly the same rate, which is critical for keeping the vehicle level. Once the lift reaches the desired height, mechanical locks engage automatically, and the hydraulic pressure is no longer what’s holding the car up — the locks are. That’s the safety principle behind every reputable lift on the market.

The second was a low-profile portable mid-rise scissor lift, which uses a single or dual hydraulic cylinder pushing directly into a scissor frame, raising the car maybe 3-4 feet — plenty for wheel and tire work, and easy to roll out of the way in a small bay.

The two-post gave him full underbody access and would handle brake and suspension work down the road, but it needed a 10-12 foot ceiling and a permanent anchor into the slab. The mid-rise needed less overhead clearance and could be moved between bays, but it maxed out around 6,000 lbs and wasn’t built for heavier trucks. Because his work was overwhelmingly tire rotation and light wheel service, and because his leased bay had shared ceiling height with another tenant, the mid-rise made more practical sense even though the two-post is the more versatile long-term machine. This is the kind of tradeoff we walk every customer through before they buy anything.

Model Numbers and Specs That Actually Matter

When people ask how does a car lift work well enough to compare spec sheets, we tell them to stop staring at overall lift capacity and look at rise height, width between posts or arms, and runway length if it’s a four-post configuration. A Rotary two-post rated at 10,000 lbs with a low overall height might fit a 10-foot ceiling where a taller-column BendPak of the same capacity won’t clear. Arm reach matters just as much — short arms won’t get under a long-wheelbase truck, and that’s a common mismatch we see when people buy based on price alone.

For someone doing wheel and tire work specifically, we also look at rolling jacks and jack trays that ride between the lift’s runways, letting the technician raise the vehicle, then use a secondary jack to lift one corner independently for tire changes without dropping the whole car. That’s a detail that never shows up on a capacity sticker but makes a huge difference in daily workflow. Hydraulic Cylinders, Cables, and Locks Explained

The cylinder is the heart of the system. On a two-post lift, equalizer cables make sure that if one side has slightly more resistance, the other side doesn’t run ahead and tip the vehicle. On a four-post lift, it’s usually a single cylinder under one runway with a cable routed to the opposite runway, so both platforms rise together.

Once you’re at height, safety locks — mechanical dogs or pins — drop into a track and physically hold the carriage or platform up. If hydraulic pressure were the only thing holding the car up, a slow leak or hose failure would let it drift down without warning. With locks engaged, that can’t happen; the lift has to be intentionally released before it will lower. We check slab thickness and condition, because anchoring a two-post lift into cracked or thin concrete is asking for trouble down the road. We run or verify the electrical circuit to the lift’s power unit, set the posts level and plumb, route the hydraulic hoses, and then run a full cycle test — up, down, lock engagement, lock release — multiple times before we call the job done.
