Every spring we get calls from weekend mechanics in northeast Iowa who have already picked out a hydraulic lift automotive setup online, cleared a corner of the shop, and then realized nobody ever told them what the concrete under their feet needs to look like. That call usually comes on a Saturday morning, with the freight truck scheduled for Tuesday. This article is the pre-purchase checklist we walk homeowners through on the phone, in the order we actually walk it.

Start With the Concrete, Not the Catalog

The single most common mistake we see is choosing equipment first and checking the floor second. A two-post lift concentrates the entire weight of the vehicle plus the lift structure into eight or twelve anchor bolts spread across two small baseplates. That load path ends in your slab. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post, and many of the taller-column models want more. Four-post lifts spread the load across four points and are more forgiving, which is one reason we recommend them so often for northeast Iowa hobby garages where the slab is an unknown quantity.

Here is the problem with a lot of rural Iowa outbuildings: the pour was done by whoever was available, sometimes decades ago, sometimes over a gravel base that has settled unevenly. We have cored slabs in Butler and Fayette counties that measured five inches at one end of the bay and three at the other. Before you buy, drill a test hole with a hammer drill and a long masonry bit in the exact footprint where each column will sit, not in the middle of the bay. Measure the depth to subgrade. If you find less than four inches anywhere a column lands, you are not out of options, but the option is a saw-cut footing pad, not a wish. Doing that math before the truck arrives saves a week of standing around.

Rebar, Wire Mesh, and Why Anchors Care

Rebar helps a slab resist cracking and helps it act as one piece instead of several. That matters for anchor performance, because a wedge anchor works by expanding against the concrete around it; if that concrete is a small isolated island bounded by cracks, the anchor has nothing to fight. Most residential slabs in this part of the state were poured with 6×6 welded wire mesh rather than rebar grid, and honestly, mesh that actually ended up in the middle of the pour instead of stomped to the bottom does a reasonable job. Number 4 rebar on 18 or 24 inch centers is better.

What you cannot do is drill through a rebar bar and expect a good anchor. When we install a hydraulic lift automotive package in an existing garage, we lay out the baseplate, mark the holes, and if a bit hits steel we shift the plate slightly rather than switch to a rebar cutter and compromise the reinforcement. That is why we ask homeowners not to pre-drill anything before we arrive. If you are pouring new concrete specifically for this project, tell your concrete contractor what is going in: six inches, 4,000 PSI, number 4 rebar on 18 inch centers, and no control joints running through the column locations. A slab poured with lift anchors in mind costs a little more and eliminates the entire category of problems we spend spring and summer fixing.

Ceiling Height and What You Actually Want to Do

Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and truss bottoms all count. For a four-post storage lift where the goal is parking one vehicle over another, you need the height of the lower vehicle plus the runway and carriage assembly plus the height of the upper vehicle plus a few inches of clearance. That math usually needs somewhere around eleven feet of usable height for two normal cars, and considerably more if the top car is a truck or the bottom one is anything tall.

If your ceiling is nine feet, a two-post is not going to let you stand under a sedan at full rise, but a mid-rise scissor absolutely earns its keep. For general daily maintenance — oil changes, brake jobs, exhaust work, rotating tires before a January cold snap — a mid-rise at 40 to 48 inches of lift height covers most of what a weekend mechanic does. We install a lot of them in northeast Iowa attached garages where the homeowner refuses to give up the overhead door. Be honest about your actual use case before you buy. The person who wants a lift for maintenance and the person who wants one to store a convertible for six months need different machines, and buying the wrong one because it was on sale is an expensive way to learn that.

Power Supply: The Detail Everyone Forgets

The power unit on most home-grade lifts is either 110V single phase or 220V single phase. The 110V units work, and for a hobbyist doing a few lifts a week they work fine, but they are slower, they draw hard on startup, and they do not love sharing a circuit with an air compressor. If you have 220V available in the building, use it. If your outbuilding is fed by a single 60-amp subpanel that also runs a welder and a heater, plan the load before you plan the install.

We also ask about the outlet location. Most power units sit on a column or a wall-mount bracket and the factory cord is short. A dedicated 20-amp outlet within a few feet of the power unit is the cleanest answer, and it is a lot cheaper to have an electrician add it before the equipment is bolted down than after. One more thing on power: if you are looking at a used unit from an auction or a closing shop, check whether the motor is three phase. Plenty of good commercial equipment shows up on the used market wired for 208/230 three phase, which does not exist in a residential garage. Converting means a rotary phase converter or a VFD and a new motor, and by the time you have paid for that you could have bought new. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you parts for a machine that will never run in your building.

Choosing the Right Hydraulic Lift Automotive Configuration

Once the building is understood, the equipment choice gets simple. For a home garage doing general maintenance with adequate ceiling height, a two-post asymmetric gives you the best door access and the cheapest path to standing under a car. For storage plus occasional service, a four-post with a rolling bridge jack is hard to beat, and it needs no anchoring in many configurations, which is why we point people with questionable slabs toward it. For low ceilings or a shared garage, a mid-rise scissor stores flat and comes out when you need it.

All of them are real equipment with real parts support, which matters more than any spec sheet number. The reason we care about parts support is simple: a hydraulic lift automotive machine is a hydraulic system, and hydraulic systems eventually need seals, hoses, cylinders, and cables. When someone buys an off-brand lift from an online marketplace and the seller disappears, we are the ones getting the call about a cylinder nobody makes a seal kit for anymore. Freight, Rigging, and the Day It Shows Up

A two-post lift arrives on a pallet weighing somewhere between 1,500 and 2,200 lbs, usually on a semi with no liftgate and no forklift. That is not the driver’s problem to solve. Before you order, decide how the pallet is coming off the truck: a tractor with forks, a skid steer, a rented telehandler, or a delivery to a nearby business with a dock. We have watched more than one northeast Iowa homeowner discover this at 7 a.m. on delivery day with a driver on a clock.

Also plan the approach. Gravel driveways, soft spring ground, low-hanging power lines, and a tight turn between the house and the shop have all cost people a redelivery fee. Measure your door opening height and width; a 12-foot column will not go through a standard walk door and sometimes will not clear a low overhead door header if the pallet is on a pallet jack. Once the pallet is inside, unbox and inventory everything against the packing list the same day. If a hardware bag or a hydraulic hose is missing, you want that claim open immediately, not on install day. Budget Tiers and Ongoing Maintenance

We will not quote exact dollars in an article because freight and install vary too much by location, but we can give you honest tiers. A quality mid-rise scissor for a home garage sits in the low four figures. A home-grade four-post storage lift runs mid four figures. A well-built two-post in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb class lands in the upper four figures, and installation on an existing adequate slab typically adds a modest fraction of the equipment cost. Concrete work, if you need it, is its own line item and depends entirely on how much you are cutting and pouring.

Budget for maintenance too, because a hydraulic lift automotive setup is not a fire-and-forget purchase. Check fluid level a few times a year, keep the cables and sheaves lubricated on a four-post, inspect the anchor bolt torque annually, cycle the safety locks and listen for all of them engaging, and watch for the classic early warning sign: a lift that settles slowly overnight or drifts down under load. That is almost always a cylinder seal or a bypassing pump, both of which are inexpensive to fix early and expensive to ignore.
