Configuration One: In Ground Vehicle Lift With Low Ceiling Clearance

The biggest advantage of an in ground vehicle lift is that it eliminates overhead columns and arms entirely — the entire mechanism sits below the shop floor, so a fleet bay with an 8 or 9 foot ceiling can still lift a full-size van or pickup to comfortable working height without a technician’s head anywhere near overhead steel. The tradeoff is what’s involved to get there. For fleet shops with decent ceiling height, generally 11 feet or more depending on the lift’s overall extended height, this is the faster and cheaper path, and it’s what we recommend for most fleet operators who don’t have a specific clearance constraint pushing them toward in ground.

The catch is door swing and column placement. Two-post lifts need enough width between columns and enough swing room for the arms to clear side mirrors and door panels on vans and larger pickups, and in a tight fleet bay with vehicles parked close together, that arm swing eats into usable floor space even when the lift itself is down. We’ve measured plenty of Marion and Cedar Rapids-area shops where the two-post footprint works fine for one bay but crowds the neighboring bay’s door swing, which matters if your fleet techs are opening full-size van doors on both sides simultaneously during service.

An above ground two-post lift is almost always the lower upfront cost and faster installation of the two, typically a single day once the concrete is confirmed adequate, with no excavation or drainage work required. For a fleet operator on a tight capital budget who has the ceiling height to spare, that’s often the deciding factor over any clearance advantage an in ground vehicle lift might offer.

The in ground option costs more upfront due to the pit excavation, casing installation, and concrete work, and takes several days rather than one, but it’s a long-term investment in a building where ceiling height is a permanent constraint rather than something that changes.
