An inground car lift is not something you bolt down after the fact — it has to be part of the plan before the first concrete truck shows up, and that’s the mistake we see most often from shop owners across southwest Iowa. We’ve walked into more than one bay where the slab was already poured, the drains were already run, and the owner was asking us how to shoehorn a lift into a plan that never accounted for one. Why Sequencing Comes Before Equipment Selection

Most people start their search by comparing lift models and capacities, but with an inground car lift the excavation, plumbing, and slab work has to happen before the equipment ever arrives on site. That means you need a rough decision on lift type and location weeks or months before your foundation contractor breaks ground. We’ve had southwest Iowa shop owners call us after their slab was poured, hoping we could still fit a below-grade unit into a 4-inch floor with no pit dug — and the honest answer is usually no, not without tearing out concrete.

The sequencing conversation starts with three questions: how many bays need lift access, where do cars need to sit relative to doors and tool benches, and what’s your water table and soil condition. In much of southwest Iowa, drainage and groundwater are real considerations for anything going below grade, and your excavator needs those answers before they dig. We walk through bay layout with every customer before recommending a model, because moving a planned inground unit six feet in either direction can be the difference between an easy install and a plumbing nightmare.

Foundation and Pit Requirements

An inground car lift needs a properly engineered pit — not just a hole, but a structure with the right depth, drainage, and reinforced walls to handle the cylinder assembly and hydraulic lines. Depending on the model, you’re typically looking at several feet of excavation below your finished floor level, plus room for conduit runs back to the power unit. This is where a lot of DIY planning falls apart, because general contractors who haven’t installed lift pits before will often underestimate the depth or skip the drainage detail entirely.

We always recommend involving your lift installer in the foundation conversation, not just the equipment sale. Our crew has been called out to fix pits that were dug too shallow, missing the sump connection, or poured before the cylinder specs were even finalized. Getting the pit spec right the first time saves you from cutting into fresh concrete later, which is expensive and frankly avoidable with fifteen minutes of planning up front.

Concrete Thickness and Curing Timeline

Slab thickness around an inground car lift matters just as much as the pit itself, because the surrounding floor still has to carry vehicle loads and foot traffic. Most inground installations call for a minimum of four to six inches of properly reinforced concrete around the pit opening, and that concrete needs adequate cure time before you drive anything heavy across it. Rushing this step is one of the most common reasons we get called back to a site within the first year.

If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for the lift, plan on at least a few weeks of cure time before full load-bearing use, longer in cooler weather which is a real factor in Iowa’s swing seasons. We’ve seen shops try to get a car up on a brand-new inground unit within days of the pour, and it never ends well. Build the curing window into your overall project timeline the same way you’d account for HVAC rough-in or electrical inspection — it’s a fixed cost of doing this right.

Bay Layout and Traffic Flow

Once the pit location is locked in, think hard about how vehicles will move through the bay before, during, and after a lift cycle. An inground car lift has a real advantage here because the platform sits flush with the floor when lowered, which means you don’t lose floor space to arms or posts the way you do with above-ground equipment. That flush profile is exactly why body shops and general repair bays favor this style — you can roll a car straight across it for storage or staging without the lift being in the way.

But that advantage only pays off if you’ve planned clearance for the vehicle’s full length and width, plus room for a technician to move around all four corners. We ask customers to mark out the pit boundary on their existing floor plan with tape before construction, walk it with their actual vehicles in mind, and confirm door swing and tool cart paths aren’t going to be blocked once the platform is in place.

Utility Routing: Power, Hydraulics, and Drainage

Every inground car lift needs a dedicated power run to the hydraulic power unit, plus conduit for control wiring, and in many cases a drain or sump connection to keep the pit dry. These utilities need to be roughed in before the slab closes up, which means your electrician and plumber need the lift manufacturer’s spec sheet in hand during the framing and pre-pour stage, not after.

We coordinate directly with electricians and site contractors on plenty of southwest Iowa builds specifically to avoid the guesswork. Getting the conduit run wrong, undersizing the breaker, or skipping drainage entirely are all fixable, but only at a cost — jackhammering finished concrete to add what should have been there from day one. Choosing the Right Lift Capacity for Daily Maintenance Use

For a shop doing general daily maintenance work — oil changes, brake jobs, suspension, exhaust — you don’t necessarily need the highest-capacity inground unit on the market, but you do need to be honest about your heaviest regular vehicle. A shop that occasionally services one-ton trucks or vans needs more capacity than one sticking to passenger cars and light SUVs, and undersizing capacity is a mistake that’s hard to fix after the pit is poured.

An inground car lift is a long-term investment — most of these installations run for decades with proper maintenance — so it pays to size for where your business is headed, not just where it is today. Timing Your Purchase Around Construction Milestones

The last piece of sequencing is simply timing — when do you actually need to commit to a model and place the order relative to your construction schedule. Lift manufacturers have lead times, and an inground car lift install requires coordination between our crew and your excavation and concrete contractors, so this isn’t a purchase you make the week before you need it operational.

We recommend locking in your lift selection and pit specs at minimum a month or two before your foundation work begins, giving everyone — you, your GC, your electrician, and us — enough runway to sequence the work correctly. Shops that treat the lift purchase as an afterthought almost always end up paying more in change orders and delays than they would have by planning it into the build from day one.
