A rural farm shop owner in east-central Iowa called us this fall wanting to store two vehicles for the winter in a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot side walls — and like most people planning seasonal vehicle storage, he hadn’t thought through half of what actually determines whether a mechanics car lift will fit and function in his building. Before you spend money on equipment, you need a real pre-purchase checklist, not just a capacity number. Step One: Measure Your Ceiling, Not Just the Sidewalls

Everyone tells us their sidewall height first, but that number rarely matters as much as the actual clear height from your floor to the lowest obstruction — trusses, purlins, lighting, or a garage door track. A 12-foot sidewall pole building often has less usable clearance in the center than people assume once you factor in roof pitch and any cross-bracing near the peak. For storing one vehicle on top of another, you need enough stacked height for both vehicles plus the lift’s own mechanism, and that number adds up faster than people expect.

We measure to the lowest point in the travel path, not the highest point in the building, because that’s what actually constrains you. If your farm shop has a lower beam running across part of the bay, that’s the number that matters for a mechanics car lift installation, not the peak height near the roof ridge. Bring a tape measure or laser measure and check at least three points across the width of your intended install area, because older pole buildings settle unevenly and the numbers aren’t always consistent from one side to the other.

Step Two: Check Your Floor and Foundation

Most rural shops we visit have a concrete floor poured for vehicle parking, not for lift anchoring, and those are two different specs. Lift manufacturers generally require a minimum 4-inch slab of properly cured concrete rated at 3,000 PSI or higher, and if your pole building floor was poured thinner or without rebar in the right places, anchoring a 4-post or 2-post mechanics car lift can be a problem later even if it seems fine on install day.

Ask when your floor was poured and whether it’s had at least 28 days to cure if it’s new. We’ve had to turn down install jobs — or recommend a floor reinforcement first — when a slab was poured just weeks before the scheduled install date, because uncured concrete won’t hold anchor bolts to spec. If you’re not sure about your slab’s rating or thickness, a simple core sample or even checking the original pour records from your builder can save you from a lift that never gets properly secured.

Step Three: Know Your Actual Vehicle Weights and Lengths

Seasonal storage setups often involve more than one type of vehicle — a truck, a car, maybe a side-by-side or a small tractor attachment — and the mechanics car lift you choose needs to handle the heaviest one you’ll ever park on it, not just the average. We ask every caller for actual curb weights, not guesses, because underestimating by even a thousand pounds puts you in a capacity range that isn’t rated for your equipment.

Length matters just as much as weight for storage lifts specifically, since a longer pickup or an extended cab truck can overhang the platform if you buy based on width alone. Measure your longest vehicle bumper to bumper and compare it against the platform length specs before you commit to a model. We’ve seen farm shop owners buy a mechanical 4-post rated for the right tonnage but sized for a compact car, and then discover their full-size truck hangs off both ends of the platform.

Step Four: Plan Your Power and Air Requirements

Not every mechanics car lift needs shop air, but some mechanical and hydraulic models do, and it’s worth knowing that before install day rather than during it. If you’re not planning to run an air compressor in your farm shop — which is common in pure storage setups — a mechanical locking lift that doesn’t depend on compressed air for the locking mechanism is usually the smarter fit.

Electrical requirements vary by model too. Some units run on standard 110V while heavier-duty options need dedicated 220V circuits, and running new electrical to a detached pole building isn’t a small job if you don’t already have the capacity out there. We ask about your panel’s existing capacity and distance from the install location early, because trenching new conductor to a farm shop can add real cost to a project that otherwise looked simple on paper.

Step Five: Clear the Install Path and Surrounding Space

Lift columns, crossbeams, and platforms are heavy and awkward, and getting them into a rural pole building often means navigating gravel driveways, tight door openings, or equipment already parked inside. We ask about door width and height on the building itself, not just the intended install bay, because a component that won’t fit through the door obviously can’t get installed no matter how much clearance the bay itself has.

Give yourself working clearance on all sides of where the mechanics car lift will sit — at least a few feet beyond the platform footprint for technicians and installers to move around safely during setup, and for you to actually load and unload vehicles afterward without scraping mirrors or bumpers on support columns. Farm shops often have workbenches, shelving, or parts bins lining the walls, and those need to be accounted for in your measurements, not added in afterward once the lift is already bolted down.

Step Six: Decide Between Mechanical and Hydraulic Before You Shop

For pure seasonal storage without heavy maintenance work, a mechanical locking storage lift is usually more economical than a full hydraulic service lift, and it avoids the need for shop air entirely. We’ve quoted rural customers who initially assumed they needed a full-service hydraulic mechanics car lift when what they actually wanted was straightforward stacked storage for winter — a much simpler and less expensive category of equipment.

If there’s any chance you’ll want to do actual maintenance work under a raised vehicle down the road, that changes the calculus toward a hydraulic model with better lift travel and lock positions for working comfortably underneath. Decide this upfront, because retrofitting from a storage-only mechanical unit to a full hydraulic service lift later means replacing the equipment rather than upgrading it.

Step Seven: Get a Site Survey Before You Order Anything

Every checklist item above is something you can rough-measure yourself, but a professional site survey catches details that don’t show up on a tape measure — slab cracks, uneven floor grading, door swing interference, or electrical panel capacity that looks fine on paper but isn’t once you account for other loads already on that circuit. A rushed install without a proper survey is how shops end up with a mechanics car lift that technically fits but creates daily friction — a column too close to a workbench, a platform that clips the door track, or anchor bolts that never should have gone into that section of the slab. Take the time upfront. It’s the cheapest part of the entire project and it’s the part most people skip.
