Why Suspension Shops Gravitate Toward a Mid Rise Scissor Lift

Suspension and shock work doesn’t need a full 2-post lift’s 6-foot working height most of the time. What it needs is a stable platform that gets the wheels off the ground, holds the vehicle rock-steady while you’re torquing strut bolts or swapping control arms, and gets out of the way fast for the next car. A mid rise scissor lift does exactly that — typically 18 to 24 inches of platform height at full extension for the portable full-rise units, plenty for pulling wheels and working a coil-over or leaf spring setup without ducking under a frame rail.

We’ve had foremen tell us they initially wanted a taller lift because that’s what they were used to, then realized after a week on a mid rise unit that they were spending less time climbing up and down and more time actually turning wrenches. We generally recommend positioning it so a tech can access all four corners without backing into a tool cart or another lift’s footprint — sounds obvious, but we’ve seen bays where the lift got dropped in wherever there was open concrete, and it slows every single job down afterward.

Think about tool storage too. Suspension work means torque wrenches, spring compressors, ball joint presses — heavy, awkward tools that need to live close to the lift, not across the shop. A rolling tool cart parked at one end of the lift, with the air line reeled from overhead rather than snaking across the floor, keeps the whole bay faster and safer. If you’re running two mid rise scissor lifts side by side for higher volume, leave enough space between them that a tech pulling a wheel off doesn’t clip the neighboring lift’s platform edge.

Portable units are faster but still need proper anchoring if your shop requires it, plus the electrical and air hookups dialed in correctly.
