A body shop foreman we talked with in West Des Moines had the lift picked out, the vendor picked out, and a crew ready to install — but nobody had checked the concrete. That’s the single most common gap we see before a mid rise scissor lift goes into a working body shop, and it’s the one that causes the most expensive surprises. If you’re running daily collision or general repair work and adding a lift to speed up inspections, alignments, or undercarriage work, the slab underneath it matters just as much as the lift itself. Why Concrete Comes Before the Mid Rise Scissor Lift Itself

A mid rise scissor lift concentrates a vehicle’s weight onto a handful of anchor points instead of spreading it across four tires on open floor. In a body shop running multiple bays and multiple lifts, that concentrated load happens dozens of times a day, every day, for years. Concrete that’s marginal will show it fast — hairline cracking around anchors, bolts that won’t torque properly, or slow settling that throws the lift out of level.

We’ve walked into more than one West Des Moines shop where the foreman assumed that if the floor holds a car parked on it, it’ll hold a lift bolted into it. Those aren’t the same load case. A parked vehicle spreads weight across tires touching a wide area; a scissor lift’s anchor bolts pull and shear at four or six small points, and that’s where thin or poorly cured concrete fails first. Getting this right before the lift shows up saves you from tearing out a slab six months after install.

Minimum Slab Thickness for a Mid Rise Scissor Lift

Most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of structural concrete for lighter-duty mid rise units, with many commercial installs calling for closer to six inches depending on capacity and anchor pattern. Four inches is often the bare minimum for a lighter mid rise scissor lift, and we treat that number as a floor, not a target, especially in a body shop where the lift is cycling constantly instead of sitting loaded once and staying put.

We always ask for the age and pour records of the slab if a shop has them, because concrete strength and cure time matter as much as raw thickness. A four-inch slab poured to proper PSI and fully cured is a very different surface than a four-inch slab poured in a rush that never got a full cure cycle. We test with a core sample or at minimum a visual and tap inspection before we sign off on any install location in an existing building.

Rebar and Mesh: What Actually Matters

Rebar and wire mesh get a lot of attention in slab conversations, but they matter less than people think for anchor pull-out strength. Rebar primarily helps concrete resist cracking and shifting over time — it does very little to add pull-out resistance for the anchor bolts themselves, which rely on the concrete mix and depth around them, not the steel reinforcement running through it.

That said, a slab with proper rebar or mesh is going to hold up better over years of a mid rise scissor lift cycling in a busy body shop, because it resists the cracking that eventually loosens anchors indirectly. We check for reinforcement mainly as an indicator of how the slab was built overall — a shop that skipped rebar often skipped other steps too, like proper base compaction underneath the pour, which is just as important as the concrete itself.

Flush Mount vs Surface Mount in a Working Bay

Body shops choose between flush-mounted and surface-mounted lifts based on bay layout and how much floor traffic moves through that space. Flush mount sits recessed into the slab, which keeps the bay floor level for foot traffic, dollies, and rolling equipment — a real advantage in a busy shop where people are constantly walking around a raised vehicle. Surface mount sits on top of existing concrete and installs faster, but it leaves a raised platform that crews have to step around.

We’ve done both across West Des Moines shops, and the deciding factor is almost always existing concrete condition and budget. Flush mount requires cutting into the slab or building a pit, which is a bigger job but keeps the floor clean. If the existing floor is already solid and the shop just needs the lift in fast, surface mount gets a mid rise scissor lift running sooner without touching the concrete at all.

Anchor Bolt Spacing and Load Path

Anchor bolt spacing is dictated by the lift manufacturer, but what we check on-site is whether that spacing lands on solid, undisturbed concrete rather than a control joint, a cold joint from a repair pour, or an area with visible surface cracking. Bolting into or near a joint is one of the fastest ways to compromise anchor holding strength even on an otherwise adequate slab.

We map out the anchor pattern against the actual slab before drilling anything, adjusting position by a few inches when needed to avoid joints and cracks. In a body shop bay where the lift needs to sit in a specific spot relative to other equipment or drive lanes, this sometimes means a short conversation about shifting the whole install a foot or two to land on cleaner concrete rather than forcing the factory-spec position onto a compromised section of floor.

What a West Des Moines Foreman Should Ask Before Buying

If you’re the one signing off on a mid rise scissor lift purchase for a body shop, the questions worth asking your installer are simple: what’s the minimum slab thickness for this specific model, has anyone actually inspected our floor rather than assumed it’s fine, and what happens if the concrete doesn’t meet spec. Any installer who can’t answer the third question clearly is one to be cautious about.

Sometimes that means recommending a small reinforced pad poured at the install point instead of trusting an older slab. Sometimes it means the existing floor is perfectly fine and we’re ready to install same-week.
