A mid rise scissor lift solved a problem that a two-post never could for one overlanding and off-road build shop we worked with recently in the Des Moines metro. The shop specializes in lifted trucks and Jeeps that see CV axle and half-shaft replacement almost weekly, and their garage had a ceiling height that ruled out a lot of standard two-post options once you accounted for a raised suspension and roof rack clearance. The Ceiling Height Problem With Lifted Trucks

Most overlanding and off-road builds carry a suspension lift, bigger tires, and often a roof rack or rooftop tent — all of which eat into overhead clearance that a standard two-post lift assumes you have plenty of. This particular Des Moines metro shop had roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling height in their working bay, which sounds generous until you stack a lifted 4×4 with a roof rack on a two-post that adds another 6-7 feet of arm and carriage travel above the vehicle’s roofline.

A mid rise scissor lift solved this immediately because the platform itself doesn’t require overhead structure at all — no columns, no overhead beam, no arm swing above the vehicle. The lift only needs to raise the vehicle 28 to 42 inches, and there’s nothing built above the roofline to worry about. For a shop working exclusively on lifted trucks and Jeeps with roof racks, awnings, and tall antenna mounts, that overhead clearance question disappears entirely, which is exactly why we specced this model for their bay.

Door Swing and Bay Layout in a Tight Garage

The second constraint was door swing. The shop’s building had a single overhead door on one wall and a walk-through door on the adjacent wall, and their existing layout left barely enough clearance to open truck doors fully on one side when a vehicle was parked in the bay. A two-post lift with swing arms would have made that worse, since techs need room to maneuver the arms under the frame before lifting.

A mid rise scissor lift needs almost no side clearance beyond the platform width itself, since the vehicle drives straight on and the scissor mechanism sits below the platform rather than extending outward. We measured their bay at just under 13 feet of usable width, and the scissor platform we installed left comfortable room to open both truck doors fully and still walk around the vehicle with the lift up. That single decision — platform lift over swing-arm lift — solved a layout problem that had been limiting how they scheduled jobs in that bay for over a year.

Why CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Favors This Platform

CV axle and half-shaft replacement is repetitive, detail-heavy work — you’re pulling boots, packing joints, torquing to spec, and often doing it on both sides of the vehicle in the same visit. The ideal working height for that job is roughly waist-to-chest level, which lands squarely in the 30-38 inch range most mid rise scissor lift platforms are built for.

Unlike a full-rise lift or a two-post at max height, a mid rise scissor lift keeps the axle and hub assembly at a height where a tech can work standing without reaching overhead or crouching low. For a shop doing this job multiple times a week on lifted trucks with larger, heavier axle assemblies, that ergonomic difference adds up fast — fewer sore backs, faster cycle times, and less strain moving a heavy half-shaft in and out. That’s a big part of why we recommended this exact rise category instead of pushing them toward a taller platform.

Weight Capacity for Lifted Trucks and Heavier Axle Assemblies

Lifted trucks and off-road-built Jeeps often run heavier than stock — bigger tires, steel bumpers, winches, and skid plates all add weight the factory spec sheet never accounted for. We didn’t spec this shop’s mid rise scissor lift off the base curb weight of their typical vehicles; we asked for actual as-built weights with accessories installed, which for a few of their heavier builds ran well above stock truck ratings.

We landed on a 9,000 lb capacity platform for their bay, giving real margin above their heaviest expected build rather than cutting it close. That margin matters doubly for off-road work, since a shop lifting a truck with asymmetric loading — winch up front, spare tire and fuel cans out back — puts stress on a platform differently than a stock vehicle with even weight distribution. Undersizing capacity here isn’t a minor risk; it’s the kind of mistake that shows up as a safety lock failure two years later.

Surface-Mount Install Without Cutting the Slab

The shop’s building was a converted metal pole-barn structure with a slab that hadn’t been engineered with a lift pit in mind, and nobody wanted to gamble on cutting into it without knowing exactly what was underneath. We installed their mid rise scissor lift as a surface-mount unit with approach ramps, which let us skip any slab-cutting entirely and get the lift anchored and operational in a single day.

Surface-mount also made sense given how the shop uses the bay — it’s not a single dedicated lift station, it’s one of two working bays that rotates between lift work and general fabrication. Being able to anchor without disturbing the existing floor kept their downtime during install to less than a day, which mattered because they had CV axle jobs already on the schedule that same week.

What We’d Tell Any Off-Road Shop Sizing a Lift

If you’re running an off-road or overlanding build shop anywhere in the Des Moines metro or elsewhere in Iowa, the two numbers to nail down before you call anyone are your actual clear ceiling height with the tallest build you service, and your real bay width accounting for door swing on both sides. Those two measurements eliminate more lift options than weight capacity ever will, and they’re the two things shop owners consistently underestimate when they start shopping.

We measured this shop’s bay ourselves rather than relying on their guess, and it changed the recommendation entirely — they’d been assuming they needed a full-rise unit and were surprised a mid rise scissor lift covered their CV axle and half-shaft work just as well at a fraction of the overhead clearance requirement.
