Check One: What Your Concrete Slab Can Actually Support

Before you even look at brands, walk out to your shop floor and figure out what you’re working with. Most pole barn and farm shop slabs poured in the last couple decades run 4 to 6 inches thick, but plenty of older ones are thinner, especially if the building started life as a machine shed before it became a shop. A mid rise scissor lift doesn’t need the deep pit or reinforced footings a full in-ground lift requires, but it still needs solid, uncracked concrete with real compressive strength to anchor safely.

If you don’t know your slab thickness, there are simple ways to check — a core sample at a corner, or checking old pour records if you kept them. What you’re looking for is enough thickness and, ideally, rebar reinforcement so the anchor bolts have something to grip beyond a thin surface layer. A slab with visible cracking, especially spider cracking near where you’d place the lift, is worth having evaluated before you spend money on a lift that ends up sitting unused because it failed inspection. A truck loaded with tools, fuel, and cargo weighs meaningfully more than the base spec sheet number, and that difference matters on a lift.

We generally tell rural shop owners to buy one capacity tier above what seems obviously sufficient, especially if there’s any chance the shop’s use expands to include heavier equipment down the road. The price jump between capacity tiers is usually smaller than people expect, and it’s cheap insurance against outgrowing your lift in a year or two. If your fleet is genuinely all light trucks and cars, don’t overspend — but be honest about what actually parks in that shop, including anything you might buy or inherit later.

Check Four: Clearance for Oil Drains and Filter Access

Fluid service has specific clearance needs that differ from brake or tire work. You need enough lift height that a technician can comfortably slide a drain pan underneath and work a filter wrench without crouching, but you don’t need the full stand-up clearance of a 2 post lift built for exhaust or transmission work. This is exactly the sweet spot a mid rise scissor lift is designed for — enough height for comfortable fluid service without the footprint or cost of a taller lift.

Check the platform design too. Some mid rise units have a solid deck that’s fine for oil changes but can make it awkward to position a drain pan directly under the pan bolt if the deck doesn’t have adequate cutouts or gaps. If your shop does a mix of oil changes and occasional tire or brake work, a platform with some open access underneath gives you more flexibility than a fully solid deck built purely for alignment work.

Check Five: Power, Bay Space, and Realistic Footprint

Farm shops often run on single-phase power from a rural electric cooperative, and most mid rise scissor lift models are built for standard 220V single-phase service, so this usually isn’t a dealbreaker — but confirm your panel has capacity before you buy, especially if you’ve already got a welder, air compressor, and shop heater pulling from the same panel. Bay footprint matters just as much. Measure the actual clear space where the lift will sit, accounting for door swing, workbench placement, and room to walk around a raised vehicle.
